Polly H. Carder Collection on George F. Root
George Frederick Root (1820-1895) was an American songwriter and music educator. He is perhaps best known for his song "The Battle Cry of Freedom," which was written and rose to popularity during the U.S. Civil War. The Polly H. Carder Collection on George F. Root contains original published scores and songbooks from the period 1852-1907 and photocopied scores collected by Polly H. Carder, author of the book George F. Root, Civil War Songwriter: A Biography. The collection also contains a short article, "The Last Days of George F. Root," written by Root's daughter, Clara Louise Burnham
Stabilisation of a landslide on the M25 highway London's main artery
This paper describes the lessons learnt in the assessment, stabilization and subsequent monitoring of a landslide, which mobilized over 90,000 m3 of material and threatened to completely close England’s busiest highway, the M25 around London. The wedge shaped slide occurred on the 19th December 2000 and extended some 80m up the slope with a slip surface up to 10 m below the ground surface. Due to the strategic importance of the M25, the design and construction was fast tracked to be completed before the fall rains when further movements would be inevitable. The adopted solution used a combination of 1050 mm diameter augered piles, a deep cutoff trench and counterforts at the toe and was extensively instrumented. The collected data for the winter 2001/02 demonstrates that not only were the remedial works successful in stabilizing the slope but that the proposed design method can accurately predict the bending moments and forces produced in the pile
Rev. Dr. Muriel M. Spurgeon Carder (1922–2023): A Canadian Baptist Renaissance Woman
“Renaissance Woman” is a colloquial expression for someone who excels above and beyond normal in a wide variety of tasks, and Rev. Dr. Muriel Spurgeon Carder (1922–2023) deserves that title, for she was an ordained Canadian Baptist missionary who worked in churches, schools, and hospitals in India and Canada, as well as served as a professor, New Testament scholar, Bible translator (into Telegu), and hospital chaplain. She also published academic articles on textual issues related to New Testament manuscripts, on a biblical theology of sin, as well as on issues surrounding physical and mental challenges. Her personal accomplishments are striking among Baptists in India but also her Canadian denomination, the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec (BCOQ). Carder recently passed away at the age of 100, and this research is an introduction to her life and legacy. There is much more to be explored regarding Carder, and my hope is that this brief article provides some impetus for more detailed and comprehensive research on such an iconic figure in the BCOQ. That said, this article does more than merely provide a summary of her life and legacy. It also aims at using the experience of Carder to explore some common assumptions about Canadian women in ministry, identifying when she reinforces some and undermines others. In other words, the example of Carder complexifies what can be assumed about the experience of women in the church and warns against universal generalizations surrounding their experience. In 2008, the denomination changed its name to Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ), and for the sake of simplicity and clarity, CBOQ will be used throughout this article
The genome sequence of the Common Carder Bee, Bombus pascuorum (Scopoli, 1763) [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]
We present a genome assembly from an individual female Bombus pascuorum (the Common Carder Bee; Arthropoda; Insecta; Hymenoptera; Apidae). The genome sequence is 307.5 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 17 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 21.9 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 12,999 protein coding genes
A review of occupational disease surveillance systems in Modernet countries.
BACKGROUND: To improve occupational health public policies and to facilitate coordinated research within the European Union to reduce the incidence of occupational diseases (ODs), it is important to know what OD surveillance systems exist and how they compare. Monitoring trends in occupational diseases and tracing new and emerging risks in a network (Modernet) participants are well placed to provide this information as most either contribute data to and/or are involved in the management of OD systems. AIMS: To identify and describe OD surveillance systems in Modernet countries with the longer-term objective of identifying a core template to be used on a large scale. METHODS: A questionnaire sent to Modernet participants, seeking structured information about the OD surveillance system(s) in their country. RESULTS: Overall 14 countries (70%) provided information for 33 OD systems, among them 11 compensation-based (CB) systems. Six countries provided information for non-CB systems reporting for any type of OD. The other systems reported either only ODs from a prescribed list, or specific diagnoses or diagnostic groups, with reports to most schemes being physician-based. Data collected varied but all systems collected diagnosis, age, gender, date reported and occupation (and/or industry) and most collected information on exposure. CONCLUSIONS: This review provides information beneficial to both policy makers and researchers by identifying data sources useable to measure OD trends in European countries and opening the way to future work, both on trend comparisons within Europe and on the definition of a core template to extend OD surveillance on a larger scale

The purpose of this report is to present the activities carried out during the academic internship at the Risaralda Regional Autonomous Corporation (CARDER), specifically at the Subdirectorate of Territorial Environmental Management (SGAT), over a six-month period, from August 2024 to February 2025.
CARDER is responsible for providing support and advice to individuals and legal entities in the department's 14 municipalities, through its various departments and with the support of professionals in geology, civil engineering, and forestry engineering. This support is important because many municipalities lack adequate personnel to address situations related to disaster risk management.
As the highest environmental authority in Risaralda, in compliance with Law 99 of 1993, CARDER manages natural resources and promotes their sustainable development. However, according to Law 1523 of 2012, their role in disaster risk management is one of technical support and advice, and does not relieve mayors and governors of their primary responsibility in implementing strategies to reduce the exposure and vulnerability of their territories.
During this academic internship, technical support was provided during 31 field visits. Two of these visits focused on mining activities, while the remaining 29 focused on disaster risk management. The purpose of these visits was to identify the triggering and contributing factors of the evaluated geodynamic processes, with the goal of developing technical concepts that describe the findings, analyze possible causes, and present conclusions and recommendations derived from the field observations. Seriality in Contemporary American Memoir: 1957-2007
In this dissertation, I examine the practice of what I term serial memoir in the
second-half of the twentieth century in American literature, arguing that serial memoir
represents an emerging and significant trend in life writing as it illustrates a transition in
how a particular generation of writers understands lived experience and its textual
representation. During the second-half of the twentieth century, and in tandem with the
rapid technological advancements of postmodern and postindustrial culture, I look at the
serial authorship and publication of multiple self-reflexive texts and propose that serial
memoir presents a challenge to the historically privileged techniques of linear
storytelling, narrative closure, and the possibility for autonomous subjectivity in
American life writing. As generic boundaries become increasingly fluid, postmodern
memoirists are able to be both more innovative and overt about how they have
constructed the self at particular moments in time. Following the trend of examining life
writing through contemporary theories about culture, narrative, and techniques of self-representation,
I engage the serial memoirs of Mary McCarthy, Maya Angelou, Art
Spiegelman, and Augusten Burroughs as I suggest that these authors iterate the self as serialized, recursive, genealogically constructed, and material. Finally, the fact that
these are well-known memoirists underscores the degree to which serial memoir has
become mainstream in American autobiographical writing. Serial memoir emphasizes
such issues as temporality and memory, repetition and recursivity, and witnessing and
testimony, and as such, my objective in this project is to theorize the practice of serial
memoir, a form that has been largely neglected in critical work, as I underscore its
significance in relation to twentieth-century American culture. I contend that seriality in
contemporary American memoir is a burgeoning and powerful form of self-expression,
and that a close examination of how authors are presenting and re-presenting themselves
as they challenge conventional life writing narrative structures will influence not only
the way we read and understand contemporary memoir, but will impact our approaches
to self-reflexive narrative structures and provide us with new ways to understand
ourselves, and our lives, in relation to the serial culture in which we live
