Rationally designed Magnetic Particles enable Capturing and Detection of Bacterial Pathogens

In this work we highlight magnetic blood purification as possible therapy for blood stream infections [1-2], where circulating pathogens are at first removed from the bodily fluid and subsequently recovered and analyzed. (Fig. 1) This process would result in an immediate therapeutic benefit for the patient, while also considerably shortening the diagnosis process, a critical step which heavily affects the final outcome of the treatment. Finally, the use of a newly developed human IgG1 monoclonal antibody against poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG) as targeting moiety extends this therapy to the majority of the pathogens responsible for the most frequent nosocomial infections. We show an experimental proof-of-concept study along with an optimization of carrier-pathogen interactions based on a mathematical model and an investigations on the process safety [3]. [1] I. K. Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804
Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804: 283. – Type locality. Not given.—Onomatophore: Holotype: deposited in the “Musée zoologique de la ville de Strasbourg” (Strasbourg, France) but now lost (M.-D. Wandhammer, in litt., February 2009).

Status. Not a member of the Xenochrophis piscator -complex, this taxon should be removed from the synonymy of Tropidonotus umbratus and other synonyms of X. piscator.

Comments. Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) regarded this species as a synonym of Tropidonotus umbratus (Daudin, 1803). However, the description of the holotype of Coluber atratus Herrmann, 1804 shows that this taxon is not referable to the genus Xenochrophis. Furthermore, both Schlegel (1837) and Cantor (1847: 90) mentioned another taxon, supposedly described by Herrmann (1804), C. brunneus. We could not find any mention of this taxon in Herrmann’s book, and we cannot comment on its status.
Published as part of Published, First, 2012, 3473, pp. 1-60 in Zootaxa 3473 on page

Esperienza della significatività – Trascendenza e orizzonte – Evento. L'unità nel cambiamento del pensiero di Martin Heidegger

    No full text

General matter coupled N=4 gauged supergravity in five dimensions

    No full text
We construct the general form of matter coupled N=4 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Depending on the structure of the gauge group, these theories are found to involve vector and/or tensor multiplets. When self-dual tensor fields are present, they must be charged under a one-dimensional Abelian group and cannot transform non-trivially under any other part of the gauge group. A short analysis of the possible ground states of the different types of theories is given. It is found that AdS ground states are only possible when the gauge group is a direct product of a one-dimensional Abelian group and a semi-simple group. In the purely Abelian, as well as in the purely semi-simple gauging, at most Minkowski ground states are possible. The existence of such Minkowski ground states could be proven in the compact Abelian case
