Gender balance in alkali activated materials / geopolymers research

    No full text
The aim of this study is to evaluate the gender balance in a topic of Materials Research related to the development of alkali activated materials (AAMs) including geopolymers. A great attention has been recently addressed to this topic as AAMs represent a new class of materials with sustainable features. The first paper on geopolymers was published in 1979 by Davidovits, but around early 2000s the research interest has increased and nowadays up to 1000 papers each year are published on International peer-reviewed journals (Scopus source) since 201

New blended cement from polishing and glazing ceramic sludge

    No full text
Waste generated in ceramic tiles manufacturing is not usually recycled inside the productive plant, but rather disposed to landfill. This paper deals with ceramic residues from polishing and glazing processes, as constituents for innovative blended cements. New binders made up of 75% CEM I 52.5 R and 25% residues were chemically, physically, and mechanically characterized with reference to EN 197-1 requirements and the results compared with ordinary Portland cement. Mechanicalstrength development and microstructure of the relevant mortar have been investigated up to 90 days of curing, and the behavior of polishing and glazing residues as cement constituents is reported

Mesophase Behavior of Polyesther-Polymethacrylate Liquid Crystal Block Copolymers

The synthesis and properties of two series of main chain and side chain LC block copolymers constituted by a side chain LC polymethacrylate block and a main chain LC polyester block were described. The two chemically different blocks are phase segregated. The trend of the thermodynamic phase transition parameters suggests that the smectic phase of the side chain blocks provides less favourable boundary conditions than the isotropic phase of the side chain blocks and decreases the stability of both the nematic and smectic mesophases of the main chain block

Insulating behavior of metakaolin-based geopolymer materials assess with heat flux meter and laser flash techniques

Thermo physical behavior of metakaolin-based geopolymer materials was investigated. Five compositions of geopolymers were prepared with Si/Al from 1.23 to 2.42 using mix of sodium and potassium hydroxide (~7.5 M) as well as sodium silicate as activator. The products obtained were characterized after complete curing to constant weight at room temperature. The thermal diffusivity (2.5-4.5 × 10-7m2/s) and thermal conductivity (0.30-0.59 W/m K) were compared to that of existing insulating structural materials. The correlation between the thermal conductivity and parameters as porosity, pore size distribution, matrix strengthening, and microstructure was complex to define. However, the structure of the geopolymer matrix, typical porous amorphous network force conduction heat flux to travel through very tortuous routes consisting of a multiple of neighboring polysialate particles
