The Knot as Metaphor in Gillian Bouras' Aphrodite and the Others

    No full text
This paper aims to discuss a central theme in the work of Australian-born author Gillian Bouras. The theme is the symbolic references to knots in her literature, in particular the text Aphrodite and the Others, and the use of the term knot as a metaphor for life’s experiences both from a Greek villager’s perspective and from a writer’s perspective

Low-Cost Strategy to Detect Faults Affecting Scrubbers in SRAM-Based FPGAs

    No full text
SRAM-based Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are vulnerable to SEUs. For applications demanding high reliability this problem is often solved by integrating in the system a scrubber, a circuit that periodically scans the FPGA configuration memory and reconfigures it if an error is detected. Since the scrubber is usually implemented in the same FPGA device, it is also vulnerable to SEUs, thus the scrubber reliability is increased by adopting standard fault tolerance techniques. These solutions guarantee the scrubber reliability, but generally require a large area overhead. In this paper, we present a novel low-cost strategy capable to detect faults in the FPGA configuration memory implementing the scrubber. The proposed technique is based on time redundancy, forcing the scrubber output to produce an error indication for each word read from the FPGA memory, in order to detect the faults affecting the portion of FPGA memory implementing the scrubber. The implementation of our proposed strategy presents a negligible impact in terms of area overhead (4.17%) and a limited increase in power consumption (22.9%) over the original (unprotected) scrubber. As for the impact on system performance introduced by our strategy, it is of approximately the 38.2% over the unprotected scrubber, but it can be significantly lowered by reducing the frequency at which the scrubber is applied to test the FPGA

Epidemiology and management of chronic constipation in elderly patients

Maria Vazquez Roque, Ernest P Bouras Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, USA Abstract: Constipation is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder, with prevalence in the general population of approximately 20%. In the elderly population the incidence of constipation is higher compared to the younger population, with elderly females suffering more often from severe constipation. Treatment options for chronic constipation (CC) include stool softeners, fiber supplements, osmotic and stimulant laxatives, and the secretagogues lubiprostone and linaclotide. Understanding the underlying etiology of CC is necessary to determine the most appropriate therapeutic option. Therefore, it is important to distinguish from pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD), slow and normal transit constipation. Evaluation of a patient with CC includes basic blood work, rectal examination, and appropriate testing to evaluate for PFD and slow transit constipation when indicated. Pelvic floor rehabilitation or biofeedback is the treatment of choice for PFD, and its efficacy has been proven in clinical trials. Surgery is rarely indicated in CC and can only be considered in cases of slow transit constipation when PFD has been properly excluded. Other treatment options such as sacral nerve stimulation seem to be helpful in patients with urinary dysfunction. Botulinum toxin injection for PFD cannot be recommended at this time with the available evidence. CC in the elderly is common, and it has a significant impact on quality of life and the use of health care resources. In the elderly, it is imperative to identify the etiology of CC, and treatment should be based on the patient’s overall clinical status and capabilities. How low can you go? Short-read polishing of Oxford Nanopore bacterial genome assemblies

    No full text
It is now possible to assemble near-perfect bacterial genomes using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) long reads, but short-read polishing is usually required for perfection. However, the effect of short-read depth on polishing performance is not well understood. Here, we introduce Pypolca (with default and careful parameters) and Polypolish v0.6.0 (with a new careful parameter). We then show that: (1) all polishers other than Pypolca-careful, Polypolish-default and Polypolish-careful commonly introduce false-positive errors at low read depth; (2) most of the benefit of short-read polishing occurs by 25× depth; (3) Polypolish-careful almost never introduces false-positive errors at any depth; and (4) Pypolca-careful is the single most effective polisher. Overall, we recommend the following polishing strategies: Polypolish-careful alone when depth is very low (25×).George Bouras, Louise M. Judd, Robert A. Edwards, Sarah Vreugde, Timothy P. Cluster Development and Knowledge Exchange in Supply Chain

    No full text
Industry cluster and supply chain are in focus of every countries which rely on knowledge-based economy. Both focus on improving the competitiveness of firm in the industry in the different aspect. This paper tries to illustrate how the industry cluster can increase the supply chain performance. Then, the proposed methodology concentrates on the collaboration and knowledge exchange in supply chain. For improving the capability of the proposed methodology, information technology is applied to facilitate the communication and the exchange of knowledge between the actors of the supply chain within the cluster. The supply chain of French stool producer was used as a case study to validate the methodology and to demonstrate the result of the study.Knowledge engineering, Logistics, Knowledge Exchange
