Progress demands research, study environment with an eye to the future may lead to new scenarios, we speak of an environment so much: pollution, traffic, consumption, we complain, we discuss it with colleagues, but not always participate. The conference in Environmental Design is just one way to begin to disclose what research has done, on several levels: the scientific level and debate among researchers, to make visible the theories and their proofs at all, to make aware the public institutions and the business of what are the steps for the future, to improve personal well-being and the community. Discuss, analyze, propose is the only way to face the future. Invited scientific excellence, from various parts of the world and distinguished research centers, to discuss, to listen and to propose new thoughts, the opportunity for new investigators to have a moment to expound on an international level the advances of their research, become opportunity for participation and useful comparison to that vision that MDA has established itself from the beginning that is to improve the quality of life... Periodically MDA organizes a conference open to researchers around the world who are interested in giving their contribution to the development of the debate on improving the quality of life. The conference held in Turin in 2017 had the participation of researchers in architecture, engineering, medicine, agriculture and design, the results have been published in this volume on the association’s website (http: // mda.center)

The current orientation in medical education defines how the experience gained through simulation is at the basis of the development of clinical experience. As in many forms of innovative teaching, postgraduate students implement clinical practices in environments that simulate real situations through active learning. In this context we describe the state of the art regarding the main tools for managing critical events in the medical field, through an experimental research that investigates the potential offered by communication design for medical training in immersive simulation environments, also in relation to narrative medicine. Starting from the most widespread simulation methodologies that take place in reconstructed real environments, case studies regarding emergency intervention were selected, in order to analyse risk situations. The study spurred the organization of design considerations in relation to the main practices and guidelines related to emergency management, with the aim of identifying how to integrate communication design and achieve better performance on behalf of the involved actors

    Organic Sicily: grows from nature

    No full text
It is known that Sicily is a land characterized by many economic, productive and sociocultural problems, but it is also one of the richest regions in terms of natural resources being, by extension, the most biological region of Europe. In this sense, Sicily can be considered as a land of abundance due to the enormous quantity of renewable resources available on the island. In this context, current European policies focused on the promotion and dissemination of the circular and bio economy, are particularly suited to the development of a Sicilian economy capable of integrating economic, environmental and social growth. Among the numerous organic surpluses available to Sicily, the beached residues of posidonia oceanica, with its 22,500 tons deposited on the Sicilian coast each year, represent a problem of difficult management for the municipal administrations. Based on this scenario, a design-oriented territorial development model was designed in order to enhance the beached residues in a new sustainable bioplastics. This operation has allowed the recovery of a material that has always been considered a waste and its consequent transformation into a resource, allowing a high ethical, ecological and social value for the entire territory. This new strategy triggers win-win relationships between individuals, local administrations and businesses for the actors involved, guaranteeing economic and environmental benefits. Participation and collaboration thus become the two distinctive elements of this paradigm shift, where the territory and its physical, human and natural resources are the true creators of this innovative and environmental development. An innovation that drives us to rethink the way we do business as it is now considered

Design Research experience for Product Design innovation

This paper, through an applicative case study, reflects on the new frontiers of Product Design and Design Research applied to products, definable as “technical industrial products”, that are usually either invisible or only accessible to specialized operators. Such products today change their meaning in a market that’s evolving towards the digital world, being similar to commodities. These are often tied to a technical and regulatory dimension that limits their innovation, in both form and usage. What’s the role of design in these cases? How, through design, can these products and their companies’ identities be defined? How can a multi-national corporation, having dozens of brands and several thousand products settled through the years, generated through additive logic and continuous brands acquisition, be distinctly recognized on the market? This paper describes the development of an original Design DNA and Design Language that, starting by analyzing the corporate product ecosystem (circa 6000 unique references for over 80.000 catalogued variants), identifies a renovation process of corporate products capable of granting brand recognizability without intervening on structural elements or already existing production processes. This activity has followed a co-design process that involved the brand’s EMEA management, with a dedicated international staff that worked actively together with the team of professors and researchers, in a coaching and learning process. This kind of activity, other than producing meaningful results in building the given objective, constituted as many training and team building moments on subjects such as design thinking and design management. The case study intends to reflect on the strategic value of both design and design research; this can contribute to the development of businesses even without actually developing any new product, acting on strategic matters1 to enhance what already exists, while at the same time defining coherent and proactive guidelines for the futur

Guidelines to set up a simulation center

The training is fundamental to allow the teams employed in rescue operations to reach the maximum effectiveness in delivering the rescue itself. Simulation techniques are an essential tool to allow learners and operators to develop hard and soft skills simultaneously. The combination of miniaturized sensor and virtual reality technologies allows the development of complex systems, able to implement the realism of the simulation itself, thus allowing an extremely effective and targeted training. These systems also allow the monitoring of training sessions, allowing the collection of a significant number of useful data for the generation of a standardized, efficient and unambiguous action practice. In this scenario, the design becomes the facilitator and manager of the complex system generated by the various actors, with the mission to indicate the directions to follow to achieve the intended objectives. The aim of the research is the generation of a system of guidelines for an intervention model that puts ergonomics, technology and instrumentation, flows, proxemics and sensory communication at its center, on the basis of which to set up a simulation center, able to to respond to the training needs of the rescue teams and to allow the provision of training, regulated and designed. In this way it will be possible to replicate and export the model in similar contexts. The aforementioned objective is linked to the need to generate an efficient and unequivocal practice of action. This will be achieved by spreading various simulation centers throughout the territory, set up according to the design guidelines, which will form the nodes of a network in constant communication, following the FabLab model, so that the system of instruments used and the center itself they can be exported to be feasible and accessible anywhere
