Letter: E. M. Risse to Audrey Moore, November 14, 1990
Textual: Letter, typescript original; 11” x 8.5” (27.9 cm x 21.6 cm)Letter from E. M. Risse, Principle of Synergy Planning, to Audrey Moore, member of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, dated November 14, 1990. In the letter, Risse expresses his concern over remarks presumably made by Moore at a public meeting concerning the Burke Centre development. Burke Centre is a planned community located in Burke, Virginia. Development on Burke Centre began in 1976. Planned Community Archives Collection, 638.01.0

Chapter: E. M. Risse, "Chapter 11: Small Privately Financed New Communities - Their Place in the New Towns Movement," January 5, 1988
Textual: Letter, typescript original; 11” x 8.5” (27.9 cm x 21.6 cm)Excerpt of a book chapter, titled New Town Planning and the Garden City/Greenbelt Ideal, by E. M. Risse entitled "Chapter 11: Small Privately Financed New Communities - Their Place in the New Towns Movement" dated January 5, 1988. This chapter specifically focuses on the development of Burke Centre in Burke, Virginia, but makes mention of Greenbelt, Maryland. This is the fourth draft of this chapter, and the draft includes a coversheet describing edits made and to be made on the chapter. This chapter was included in The Shape of the Future published in 2000. Planned Community Archives Collection, 638.01.0

Configuration of distributed message converter systems
Finding a configuration of a distributed system satisfying performance goals is a complex search problem that involves many design parameters, like hardware selection, job distribution and process configuration. Performance models are a powerful tool to analyze potential system configurations, however, their evaluation is expensive, such that only a limited number of possible configurations can be evaluated. In this paper we present a systematic method to find a satisfactory configuration with feasible effort, based on a two-step approach. First, performing a queuing network analysis a hardware configuration is determined and then a software configuration is incrementally optimized by simulating Layered Queuing Network models. We applied this method to the design of performant EDI converter systems in the financial domain, where increasing message volumes need to be handled due to the growing importance of B2B interaction
Risse in Solarzellen
Nr.
"Frosty Cliffs," Frosty Aunt, and Sandy Beaches: Teaching Aurora Leigh in Oman
“Frosty Cliffs, Frosty Aunt and Sandy Beaches: Teaching ‘Aurora Leigh’ in Oman” describes the reception of the canonical poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning by a class of university students in a small town on the Arabian Peninsula. The essay conveys details of a typical Middle Eastern college classroom and demonstrates how literary meanings are constructed out of local values. The author discusses, in fine-grained detail, how words, phrases, situations and characters from Browning’s poem are interpreted within the value-system of Muslim students; these elements combine to highlight how Western and Middle Eastern perceptions differ over, for example, the personality of a character. Risse then addresses the question of whether, given that the difference in perception is based on cultural differences, the students’ understanding be ‘corrected.’ Using Stanley Fish’s concept of interpretative communities and Paulo Freire’s concept of liberation pedagogy Risse demonstrates how to navigate situations in which the teacher’s and students’ cultural frameworks produce opposing ‘readings’ of a literary text
Derivation of upper limit on the photon fraction using the highest-energy AGASA cosmic rays
Presenter: M. Risse ([email protected]), ger-risse-M-abs1-he14-poster A new method to derive an upper limit on photon primaries for small data sets of air showers is described which accounts for shower properties varying with the primary energy and arrival direction. Applying this method to the highest-energy AGASA data, an upper limit on the photon fraction of 51% (67%) at a confidence level of 90% (95%) for primary energies above 1.25 · 10 20 eV is derived
Mikrokapseln kitten Risse
