The article focuses on Toscanini’s authoritative skill at the light of conducting emergence during the second half of the 19th century. It examines in particular the role played by repertoire and the related problems of interpretation, developed in Europe at the time of maestro’s early youth. From this point of view some details of his biography are regarded in relationship to previous experiences, namely those of A. Mariani and the unknown French musician M. K. The author suggests also an unexplored musicological topic through the comparison between several handbooks and various Toscanini’s records. Even though it is incorrect to consider at the same extent different fields of sources, as the treatise and the performance, one can admit that the sketches of baton movements can be compared with the rehearsals and concerts recorded by the Italian conductor. Furthermore a short meditation on "Die Meistershaft des Maestro" (1958), an essay of Th. W. Adorno dedicated to Toscanini’s conducting, is joined. The negative judgement of the philosopher, who describes the interpretation of Toscanini as non romantic but also a mechanized manner influenced by the modern mass culture, opens today some hermeneutic perspectives of hearing

Long-term effects of memory training in the elderly: A longitudinal study

    No full text
The effects of different types of memory training in young and older adults reported in a previous study [Cavallini, E., Pagnin, A., Vecchi, T., 2003. Aging and everyday memory: the beneficial effect of memory training. Arch. Gerontol. Geriatr. 37, 241-257] were again investigated from a longitudinal perspective 2 years after the original memory training sessions. The authors retested the original participants to measure the long-term effectiveness of two mnemonic strategies: the loci technique and strategic training. Three groups of participants (13 adults, M = 24.1, 13 younger elderly, M = 64.2 and 13 older elderly, M = 74.4) were tested using a battery of seven tasks and four questionnaires, to evaluate memory performance and metamemory variables. The three age groups and the two trainings showed similar results on memory performance. Long-term effects were found only on two memory tasks, both were highly related to everyday life showing that, without additional practice, memory performance tended to go back to the original level. Moreover, the beneficial effects of the previous training sessions were particularly evident for older adults in metamemory knowledge and for strategic training in memory complaints. Results partially support the durability of memory training in improving memory performanc

Surface Photovoltage Spectroscopy of Semiconductor Nanostructures

Surface Photovoltage Spectroscopy (SPS) [1] is a valuable method for the non-contact and non-destructive investigation of several semiconductor bulk properties, such as optical band-gap, defect-related optical transitions, minority carrier diffusion length and lifetime, Van Hove singularities or phase inhomogeneities. Moreover, SPS allows for obtaining a detailed picture of the electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces, of quantum structures such as quantum wells and superlattices. In SPS, changes in band bending (both at the free semiconductor surface and at buried interfaces) are monitored as a function of external illumination. In the present contribution the physical principles of the method and the experimental details will be discussed, together with several applications concerning a wide variety of materials, alloys and low dimensional semiconductor structures. SPS has been applied to study hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon films (nc-Si:H) [2]. nc-Si:H is a very complex material made by Si nano-crystals dispersed in hydrogenated amorphous Si (a-Si:H) matrix that is very promising for photovoltaic applications. Notwithstanding its interesting applications, many issues regarding its electronic and optical properties and the influence of structural defects on them are not completely understood yet. The SPS analyses of nc-Si:H films have allowed for the determination of defect states, energy gap and Urbach tails in the films. Several characteristics of the films were obtained: slight n-type conductivity, optical gap around 1.5 eV, Urbach tails around 50meV and the presence of intra-gap transitions relevant to defective states. Optical transitions (around 1.86 eV and 1.14 eV) were also detected and attributed to the optical gap of the amorphous phase and crystalline phases, respectively. Another application will be shown, relevant to Cd1–xZnxTe radiation detectors studied by SPS [3]. SPV spectra have been obtained on semi-insulating Cd1-xZnxTe samples with varying Zn concentration. A reliable and very accurate determination of the energy gap in Cd1-xZnxTe (with x ranging from 0 to 6.76%) has been achieved, needed to assess the exact Zn concentration which significantly affects the transport and lattice parameters of the alloys. It was also found that the electron-hole recombination at the surface has a strong effect on the determination of band gap energy through SPV spectra. Moreover a band structure feature relevant the Γ8 splitting of the valence band in CdTe has been found. A final application will concern Surface photovoltage spectroscopy of AlInN based semiconductor heterostructures. The SPS has allowed for the determination of energy gap in buried semiconductor layers and of intra-gap defect states. References: [1] L. Kronik Y. Shapira Surf. Interface Anal. 31, 954 (2001) [3] A. Pressure Oscillations Numerical Simulation In Solid Rocket Motors

    No full text
Large solid rocket motors can be affected by sustained pressure and thrust oscillations during the quasi-steady state. The root cause of this phenomenon is represented by the coupling between the vortices generation, shedding, advection and interaction with the SRM chamber geometry and the acoustic chamber modes excitement, which may act together, in a feedback coupled loop. In the present work, a Q1D model for the simulation of the pressure oscillations in solid rocket motors, named AGAR (Aerodynamically Generated Acoustic Resonance), is described, discussing a new formulation of the Q1D vorticity equation and of the closure terms for modeling the vortex sound generation. The results of the pressure oscillations simulation yielded with the new model formulation are discussed for the P80 solid rocket motor, first stage of the European launcher VEGA. © 2012 by E. Analysis of VEGA solid stages static firing tests towards the maiden flight

    No full text
VEGA is the new launcher developed by the European Space Agency and qualified with its maiden flight on February, 13rd 2012. During the launcher development, a total of eight static firing tests have been performed for the three solid stages (VEGA family SRMs), which compose the launcher: the first stage P80, the second stage Zefiro 23 and the third stage Z9A. In this work, the analysis of the static firing tests of the VEGA SRMs is performed with a post-static firing test reconstruction model, developed for the purpose. The aim is to use the measures acquired during the SFTs, in order to evaluate the actual behavior of the SRMs, through the parameters: combustion efficiency, thrust efficiency, hump, scale factor and nozzle throat area law, which define the actual performance parameters of the SRMs. The final purpose is to assess the SRMs performance parameters from the SFT data; to investigate the actual internal ballistics of the SRMs, comparing the outcomes of the SFT analysis, for each stage and, all together, all the VEGA family SRMs, in order to make possible the extrapolation of the flight conditions and to analyze the VEGA maiden flight. © 2012 by E. The article analyzes the relationship between history and the passions thorough the borrowings from the Storia d’Italia. Guicciardini by Francesco Guicciardini. Guicciardini's influence on the author of the Essais seems to extend to both the content and the form of the borrowed texts (their style, description techniques, and so on), and indeed to the treatment of the passions described. The analysis of the examples borrowed from Guicciardini in Book I fo the Essais leads to some initial conclusions ; although, there is further research yet to be done.L’étude analyse le rapport entre l’Histoire et les passions à travers les emprunts à la Storia d’Italia de Guichardin.
