Presentational/Existential Structures in Spoken versus Written German: Es Gibt and SEIN

    No full text
This article presents a synchronic, corpus-based examination of spoken German with regard to the distribution and function of presentational/ existential es gibt NP and a range of SEIN NP structures such as da SEIN , locative SEIN , es SEIN , and zero-locative SEIN . In particular, the use of da SEIN has been neglected in previous research. While es gibt is equally frequent in the spoken and written data, SEIN structures are typical of spoken German only, with da SEIN being the most frequent. The article concentrates on clauses with indefinite NPs, while the presentation of events with da and wider da-usage in spoken German are also considered

Dynamic probing of educational quality: the SEIN system

Westera, W., Wouters, P., Ebrecht, D., Vos, M., & Boon, J. (2007). Dynamic probing of educational quality: the SEIN system. In A. Landeta (Ed.), Good Practice E-Learning Book (Chapter 10, pp. 165-176). Madrid, Spain: ANCED.This chapter describes the design and implementation of a web-based system for the evaluation of distance learning courses at the Open University of the Netherlands. The evaluation system is called SEIN, which is the Dutch word for SIGNAL. The SEIN system comprises the arrangement and publication of course-related electronic questionnaires and the highly automated collection and aggregation of the students’ responses. From early 2007 SEIN has been in operation at most of faculties of the Open University of the Netherlands (Law, Arts, Environmental Sciences, Educational technology, Business administration and Psychology) and it covers up to some 200 courses. SEIN is thereby an important institutional quality assurance tool for the monitoring and evaluation of Open University courses. Next, we will first outline the educational context of the Open University of the Netherlands. Subsequently, we will identify important internal and external drivers for quality assurance, we will outline the relevant characteristics of the SEIN system, and we will describe the process of implementation. Finally, preliminary effects of the SEIN implementation will be presented

Chemical vapour deposition of diamond films onto tungsten carbide dental burs

Considerable literature is now available on the deposition of CVD diamond onto flat substrates the most common being silicon. However, very little work has been reported on the deposition of diamond onto complex three-dimensional substrates such as dental burs, micro drills and biomedical implants. Diamond is hard, wear resistant, biocompatible and corrosion resistant and therefore is an attractive candidate for uses in dental tools and for medical devices. This study focuses on the deposition of diamond, using a hot filament CVD system, on cobalt-cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) rotary cutting dental burs. Conventional dental burs are generally made of sintered polycrystalline diamond (PCD). These have a number of problems associated with heterogeneity of the crystallite, decreased cutting efficiency and a short life. A preferential (1 1 1) faceted diamond has been obtained after 12 h deposition at a growth rate of 1.2 mum/h. Diamond coated WC-Co dental burs and conventional sintered burs are used in turning, milling and drilling operations for machining materials made from metal alloys and borosilicate glass. After machining with excessive cutting performance, calculations can be made on flank and crater wear areas. Diamond coated WC-Co dental bur offer significantly lower erosion and higher wear resistance compared to uncoated WC-Co tools and sintered burs. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Growth of polycrystalline diamond on titanium nitride on silicon substrates using negative bias assisted CVD

Hot filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD) was used to grow adherent diamond films onto titanium nitride interlayers (TiN) deposited on (110) silicon substrates. TiN films were deposited using magnetron sputtering. Diamond films were subsequently grown using a bias assisted HFCVD system. We have found that when a DC bias was applied to the substrate in the range between 200-300V the nucleation density increased dramatically. The effects of negatively biasing the substrate on the nucleation density and growth of diamond are reported. The morphology of diamond crystallites and early stages of diamond nucleation were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After the initial nucleation stage, continuous diamond films were grown under standard process conditions for a period of 5 hrs. However, TiN on silicon substrates has a tendency of delaminating and cracking at CVD diamond growth temperatures commonly employed. Micro Raman analysis revealed that good quality diamond films have been deposited, as evident from a characteristic diamond peak at 1333 cm -1. The structure of both diamond and TiN films has been identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and the results are reported

Afrahat: Seine Person und sein Verständnis des Christentums

    No full text
In this important study, which is still a standard general resource on Aphrahat, Schwen deals with that writer’s life, works, and doctrine. The survey of his writing includes information on manuscripts, style, and reception history. Next, Schwen looks at the sources for Aphrahat’s Christianity: the Bible (with a discussion of canon, authority, and interpretation), church teaching, and Jewish traditions. The investigation of Christianity as presented by Aphrahat touches on topics such as the belief in one God, covenant, law, the Holy Spirit, sacraments, prayer, confession and forgiveness of sin, marriage and virginity, and asceticism. In addition, Schwen probes Aphrahat’s concept of history. This volume will be of certain use for students of Syriac literature and early Syriac Christianity
