The collection documents a very wide spectrum of Paul Rieger’s writings and interests. Series I contains personal documents such as his ordination certificate as well as Rieger’s correspondence. The most extensive part of the collection is Series 2: Writings, which contains a variety of manuscripts, articles, notes, index cards, correspondence, excerpts and lectures. Rieger’s articles cover a wide scope of topics, incuding Jewish and non-Jewish issues. His main work however, was “Zur Geschichte der Juden in Rom”. Series 3 holds a vast amount of off-prints about different subjects, such as on Jewish and non-Jewish topics, on Palestine and Israel as well as on Leo Baeck. Series 4 consists of Jewish, Yiddish, Israeli and German newspapers, and newsletters of Jewish communities in Germany. Series 5: Varia covers miscellaneous documents, such as letters of protection, legal documents, an abundance of marriage contracts, original signatures of Jewish personalities such as of Martin Buber and a record of the first meeting of the Centralverein deutscher Staatsbuerger juedischen Glaubens. There are also various pictures and drawings of different places, synagogues and people. Series 6: Oversized Materials contains Hebrew learning material, newspapers and fliers of Germany as well as Nazi propaganda. The following individuals are mentioned in this collection: Rieger, Paul; Auerbach, Berthold; Kohut, George Alexander; Philippson, Martin; Vogelstein, Hermann; Basch, Abraham; Feilchenfeld, W.; Hirsch, Otto; Levy, Alphonse; Levi, Markus Jacob; Liebeschuetz, Hans; Nathan, M.; Rieger, Emilie (nee Reiss); Rieger, Paul. The following locations are mentioned in this collection: Stuttgart; Posen; Breslau; Freudental; Wuerttemberg.Paul Rieger was born in Dresden on July 4, 1870. Between 1889-1894, he studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Philosophy and Oriental studies at the University of Breslau. In 1894, he received his PhD in Talmudic Archaeology, his thesis was titled Versuch einer Technologie und Terminologie. After that he continued his studies at the University of Berlin and the Lehranstalt fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums. In 1896, he became the rabbi of the Potsdam community. From 1902 to 1908, he was the preacher of the Hamburger Israelitischer Tempelverband. During his time in Hamburg, he became a writer and an independent scholar, as well as a lecturer in various German cities and was the leader of a liberal Jewish youth group. Between 1917 and 1922, Rieger was the rabbi (Landesrabbiner) in Braunschweig. After that he became the rabbi (Stadtrabbiner) of the Jewish Community in Stuttgart and was the member of the Oberrat der Israelitischen Religionsgemeinschaft Wuerttembergs. From 1923 to 1938, Rieger was the editor of the Gemeindezeitung. He also published several books and articles, among them the major work Zur Geschichte der Juden in Rom.Paul Rieger died in Stuttgart on July 10, 1939. His wife Emilie Rieger (née Reiss) immigrated to America in 1940.digitize

Places in Mind: Investigating the Link Between Language and Spatial Concepts

The paper raises the question of culturally determined differences in the conceptualization of place and space. Several models have already been developed that can be used to study cognitive maps. However, they either targeted a specific type of environment or were not specific enough in terms of the type of places studied. The model developed by Katalin Reszegi, on the other hand, makes it possible to study all kinds of spatial concepts and their corresponding linguistic expressions, paying special attention to the role of toponyms. In the first part of the article, she presents her model and points out the elements and aspects that are particularly important for the cognitive map. In the second part, co-author Marie Rieger discusses two specific examples (from Tanzania) of differences in the conceptualization of space. In the first case, the example of Dar es Salaam shows that the concept of street names, introduced in colonial times, still plays a minor role in orientation in urban space. In the second case, the example of the Usambara Mountains is used to hypothesize that the utilitarian aspect can lead to different naming practices in terms of which types of places are given a name and which are not

Der Maji-Maji-Krieg. Literarische Leerstellen als Chance zur Eröffnung neuer Dialogräume

Please note, that no abstracts are included in this publication. The article overview, translated in English, is therefore reproduced here: To date, there is no German-language literary work with the devastating Maji Maji War, which the German colonialists waged against the African population in German East Africa between 1905 and 1907, as its thematic center. In the German-language texts belonging to the genre of historical African novels set in German East Africa, the Maji Maji War is only mentioned in passing, if at all. Only in "Der Himmel über dem Kilimandscharo" by Leah Bach is it partly the background to the plot. The central third part of this article examines whether the author succeeds in transcending cultural boundaries through her narrative style and working out the transculturality inherent in the war situation. First, however, there is a brief overview of the historical background. In the final section, the results are summarized and reference is made to an (English-language) novel that can be considered a successful example of the transcultural treatment of the Maji Maji War and other colonial crimes

Implications of a possible 23 day periodicity for binary black hole models in Mkn 501

We investigate the implications of a massive binary system in the centre of the gamma-ray blazar Mkn 501 and show that the periodical behaviour recently observed in the TeV and X-ray lightcurves may possibly be related to the orbital motion of the relativistic jet emerging from the less massive black hale. For the special relativistic jet properties inferred from emission models, we derive an intrinsic orbital period of (6-14) yrs and a centre-of-mass distance of (2.0-3.5) x 10(16) cm. If the binary is very close with a separation of the order of that for which gravitational radiation becomes dominant, we find a maximum primary mass of similar to 10(8)M(circle dot) and a corresponding secondary mass in the range of similar to (4-42) x 10(6)M(circle dot) depending on the intrinsic jet properties. Such values are in line with the black hole masses expected from merger scenarios
