Analysis of temperature and altitude effects on the Global Energy Balance during WLTC

A definitive version was subsequently published as https://doi.org/10.1177/14680874211034292[EN] In this work, the Global Energy Balance (GEB) of a 1.6 L compression ignition engine is analyzed during WLTC using a combination of experimental measurements and simulations, by means of a Virtual Engine. The energy split considers all the relevant energy terms at two starting temperatures (20 degrees C and 7 degrees C) and two altitudes (0 and 1000 m). It is shown that reducing ambient temperature from 20 degrees C to -7 degrees C decreases brake efficiency by 1% and increases fuel consumption by 4%, mainly because of the higher friction due to the higher oil viscosity, while the effect of increasing altitude 1000 m decreases brake efficiency by 0.8% and increases fuel consumption by 2.5% in the WLTC mainly due to the change in pumping. Water supply aspects of river authorities in Texas
Price has been noted to be an important ingredient in any evaluation of future
water demands, since it is a signal of cost administered by water wholesalers or retailers.
The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of rates and ratesetting
strategies adopted by the river authorities of Texas, and the relevance of
economic efficiency for wholesale purveyors of water. Methods employed to accomplish
the objectives include collecting sample water supply contracts, surveying rate
structures, and surveying authorities' rate-setting objectives.
In its current form the economic theory of pricing emphasizes price
establishment by retail water suppliers. There are certain distinctions between wholesale
suppliers and retail distributors of water that question the adequacy of the existing theory
in its universal application. This calls for a different theory of pricing for wholesale
suppliers of water. Therefore, an efficiency-seeking pricing theory for wholesale water
purveyors is explored here.
Out of the fifteen existing river authorities in Texas, ten have wholesale supply
operations. This study finds that out of the ten authorities that have wholesale operations,
some authorities charge the same uniform rate to all their customers, while some charge a different rate to each of their customers. The fact that some river authorities charge
different rates to different categories of customers for the same water is considered
economically inefficient. Another element that lends itself to economic inefficiency is
the usage of the block rates.
Through a questionnaire, the study finds that river authorities rank revenue
sufficiency highest among six objectives pertaining to rate-setting processes. Legality is
ranked second and economic efficiency is ranked third among these six goals. Though
there are ten river authorities that supply water on a wholesale basis, only eight valid
questionnaires responses could be used for the study.
All river authorities involved with the wholesale supply of water commit most of
their water supplies to municipal, agricultural, and industrial uses and customers through
water supply contracts that contain legal agreements, which are dealt with before the
river authority supplies the water to the customer. This study discusses the various
similarities and differences between contracts of the ten river authorities that are
involved in wholesale supply of water. Out of the ten river authorities, nine responded
with their wholesale water supply contracts. One river authority responded with two
contracts, therefore there were ten contracts that were studied
Synthesis of novel allosteric modulators of the G-protein coupled receptor CB1
CB1 allosteric modulators provide new opportunities to specifically regulate biological responses mediated by CB1 receptor. This approach is an attempt to infer information about the mode of binding interactions and signaling efficacy produced by allosteric modulators. Indole-2- carboxamide, ORG27569 (5-chloro-3-ethyl-N-(4-piperidin-1-yl)phenethyl)-1H-indole-2- carboxamide) and GBR12909 exhibits allosteric modulation on the CB1 receptor and ORG27569 regulates the CB1 receptor in pathway specific manner. To better understand the interaction of these compounds with the allosteric site on CB1 receptor, we synthesized analogs of ORG27569 and GBR12909 and were further characterized for their allostery on CB1 receptor. The presence of the indole ring in indole-2-carboxamide is preferred for modulator’s binding affinity (KB) to the allosteric site, but not necessary for allosteric modulation on the orthosteric site. Through structural modification, we identified a robust CB1 allosteric modulator ICAM-b, which showed an equilibrium constant KB of 469.9 nM with a markedly high cooperativity factor (= 17.6). INVISIBLE STRUGGLES: EXPLORING CHALLENGES FACED BY WOMEN WITH AMPUTATION IN INDIA
Women in India, particularly those with amputation, face significant challenges, including but not limited to, unequal prosthetic access and satisfaction, societal discrimination, and the physical and emotional consequences of amputation. These challenges are further exacerbated by gender biases towards access to education and socioeconomic factors, which increases their vulnerability to unemployment and mental health issues. This article emphasizes the urgent need for affordable and customizable prosthetic options tailored to the unique needs of women with amputation, particularly those from low-income backgrounds who often face neglect. Thus, addressing these disparities would significantly enhance their overall well-being and independence.
