Comparison of analytical techniques to evaluate the effect of drying on oxidative status of sliced almonds during storage
Almonds (Prunus amygdalus) are highest produced tree nuts worldwide, grown mainly in Mediterranean climate. Almond contains approximately 49% total lipids of which 12g is polyunsaturated fat, 30.9% monounsaturated fat and 3.7% saturated fat. About 90% of its total fatty acid composition is unsaturated, where oleic acid is 60-70% and linoleic acid 14-26%. The unsaturated fatty acids makes the almonds susceptible to oxidative degradation by producing volatile compounds, off flavor and odor decreasing their nutritional value. The deterioration rate of the almonds lipid fraction during storage due to the oxidative process is of a great economic and nutritional importance. Therefore, before storage the fruit is subjected to multi-processing steps in order to improve its quality in term of storage stability. In this connection, the drying step and storage conditions are of decisive importance. The drying step involves removal of moisture to prevent hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation during storage which cause split of triglyceride into glycerol and free fatty acid. However over drying or under drying could lead to oxidative degradation. The combination of various analytical techniques is recommended to evaluate oxidative status as no single method is available to analyze both primary and secondary oxidation products together. In this connection, this project aims at providing most effective analytical technique that evaluates the efficiency of the drying conditions on the storage stability of sliced almonds. Therefore, four different analytical techniques have been selected, namely: Iodometric titration for peroxide value, titration method for Free Fatty acid (Acid Value), UV spectrophotometry for conjugated diene and triene and GC/MS for semi-volatile and volatile compounds were used. This study shows a positive effect of the used drying conditions on the oxidative stability since the concentration of peroxides and conjugated dienes of dried almonds decreased as compared to those of non dried and ambient dried. A constant curve for free fatty acids was obtained showing that drying was done effectively as no hydrolysis has been observed. The GC-MS method seems to be the most suitable method which gives a real picture of drying effect on the oxidative status of the stored sliced almonds.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Shreya D. When carbon monoxide goes “upside down”: vibrational signatures of CO at NaCl(100) from ab initio molecular dynamics
This article reports a systematic analysis of vibrational responses (VDOS, IR, VSF spectra) in CO/NaCl(100) across several “C-bound” and “O-bound” orientations, phases and temperatures, giving insight into picosecond vibrational dynamics.CO adsorbed on NaCl(100) is a model system for surface science showing a rich variety of interesting phenomena. It features several adsorption phases like tilted/antiparallel or perpendicular/upright, very long vibrational lifetimes of the CO internal stretch (IS) mode, anharmonicity-driven vibrational energy pooling, “C-bound” vs. “O-bound” adsorption, and heavy-atom gateway tunneling during CO inversion at low temperatures. Typically, these features and phenomena are experimentally probed by stationary and time-resolved vibrational spectra, exhibiting characteristic differences between the various adsorption modes and phases. To gain atom- and time-resolved insight into vibrational response of CO molecules on NaCl(100), vibrational density of states (VDOS), infrared (IR) and vibrational sum frequency (VSF) spectra are computed from velocity velocity correlation functions (VVCFs) by ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) for various coverages, temperatures and phases. In agreement with experiments, we find that increasing CO (“C-bound”) coverages as well as CO inversion lead to redshifts of the CO IS mode. We predict more diffuse spectra at T = 300 K compared to 30 K, reflecting the disorder of adsorbates and monolayer instability at room temperature. Analyzing molecularly decomposed and internal VDOS curves as well as computed non-linear correlation matrices give further insight into the complex molecular dynamics underlying the vibrational spectra, notably for the low-frequency regime where frustrated rotations, translations and intermolecular motions come into play. On a methodological side, we also test and discuss some intricate details of how to compute IR and VSF response using a modified formulation of the VVCF methods [Ohto et al. , J. Chem. Phys. , 2015, 143 , 124702], by including time and angle-dependent dipole and polarizability derivatives as well as intermolecular couplings by cross correlations. Their effect on computed vibrational spectra is studied. Efficacy of Drought Tolerant Rice Variety Swarna Shreya in North-eastern Ghat Zone of Odisha through Frontline Demonstration
A continuous 3 year demonstration using drought tolerant rice variety Swarna Shreya was carried out in participatory mode in farmers’ field during Kharif season 2019, 2020 and 2021 at Lathipadsa village of Surada block of Ganjam district under north-eastern ghat zone of odisha. Major constraints of traditional rice cultivation are the low productivity in upland areas due to lack of knowledge and partial adoption of recommended package of practices by rice growing farmers. Also because of less water sometime farmers do not take any crop. Therefore, present demonstration programme has been undertaken to popularize/introduce stress tolerant rice var. Swarna Shreya in drought prone and upland areas of Ganjam district of Odisha. An average yield of 38.33 q ha-1 was recorded under demonstration plots as compared to 32.17 q ha-1 in farmers practice plots. The yield improvement due to the improved practices was 18.69 percent over farmers\u27 practice. Average technology gap, extension gap, technology index was 6.67 q ha-1,6.17 q ha-1, 14.81 percent under three year frontline demonstration programme were recorded. The stress tolerant rice variety Swarna Shreya gave higher net return of Indian Rupee (INR) 33500, 40655 and INR 45350 ha-1 as compared to farmers practices with INR 26100, 23520 and 24650 ha- 1 during Kharif season of 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively. The benefit cost ratio (B:C ratio) of rice cultivation under improved practices were found to be 1.95, 2.13 and 2.08 as compared to 1.67, 1.60 and 1.58 under farmers practices

Design and characterization of three dimensional twist-braid scaffolds for anterior cruciate ligament replacement
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most commonly injured ligament in the knee, with more than 350,000 ACL injuries reported annually in the United States. Current treatments include the use of autografts and allografts which have a number of disadvantages. Previous attempts to use synthetic materials in ligament replacement have been unsuccessful due to their inability to replicate the long-term mechanical properties of the native ligament. This project focuses on developing twist-braid poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffolds for ACL replacement. Poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was incorporated into the twist-braid scaffolds to evaluate its impact on their mechanical behavior. The twist-braid scaffolds were also compared with braided scaffolds. Scaffold mechanical properties were evaluated based on stress-relaxation, tensile and fatigue properties of the braided-only, twist-braid and the twist-braid scaffolds with PEGDA. All the scaffolds exhibited properties comparable to the native human ACL with the twist-braid scaffolds displaying resistance to fatigue. Scaffolds were seeded with rat patellar tendon fibroblasts. The cell viability and amount of protein released was studied over a course of 8 weeks. The scaffolds were stained with picrosirius red after 8 weeks to show the deposition of extracellular matrix by the cells. The results from this study showed that the twist-braid scaffolds have properties most suitable for ligament replacement.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Shreya Madhavarap
