A piece of evidence regarding the full rationality of economic agents
This note reports a real case where individuals faced an apparently trivial choice, with no uncertainty involved. The data show that even in such a situation, full rationality may fail to apply. Experimental replications along the lines of the present case might prove helpful for collecting data on rationality
In the economics literature on “social customs” it is usually assumed that the individual can choose only whether or not to obey any given social norm, and that (exogenous) social sanctions influence such decisions. However, it must be recognised that the individual decides also the informal punishment to be inflicted upon those who violate society’s norms.
The present paper takes such aspect into account and singles out, by means of a simple model, some behavioural hypotheses able to produce an overall sanctioning level that would maintain respect of norms as an equilibrium state. The analysis concludes with study of one possible dynamic evolution of the model showing the maintenance of several equilibria with social norms
On the vacuity of the notion of efficiency in Economics
Efficiency is still a pervasive idea in economic literature. This paper aims to discuss the relevance of this notion. It argues that efficiency is useless in neoclassical economics - where efficiency is a necessary consequence of the postulate of full rationality - and is meaningless in a complex system view - where the means-ends framework does not apply globally. Implications for environmental economics and for ecological economics are drawn. Finally, it is pointed out that, even without efficiency, collective action can still play a major role
