    On the Trade-off between Power Consumption and Time Synchronization Quality for Moving Targets under Large-Scale Fading Effects in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this work we find a lower bound on the energy required for synchronizing moving sensor nodes in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) affected by large-scale fading, based on clock estimation techniques. The energy required for synchronizing a WSN within a desired estimation error level is specified by both the transmit power and the required number of messages. In this paper we extend our previous work introducing nodes? movement and the average message delay in the total energy, including a comprehensive analysis on how the distance between nodes impacts on the energy and synchronization quality trade- off under large-scale fading effects.Fil: Briff, Pablo.     Automatic generation of VHDL code for a railway interlocking system

    Supervision system for emergency brake and traction-system isolation on train formations

    In the event of an emergency, railway safety systems typically work by isolating the traction-system and applying the emergency brake, causing logistic problems on the railway line where the train formation remains stopped. This paper presents the design of a supervision system that enables the train formation to be moved in a limited and controlled way to a repair workshop or to a safe place for dropping off passengers (in the case of passenger trains). This supervision system is considered critical, because it operates on the emergency brake and the traction-system. Thus, recommendations of the UNE-EN 50126 standard were followed during its design.     On energy-efficient time synchronization for wireless sensors under large-scale and small-scale fading effects

    In this work, the existing trade-off between time synchronization quality and energy is studied for both large-scale and small-scale fading wireless channels. We analyze the clock offset estimation problem using one-way, two-way and N-way message exchange mechanisms affected by Gaussian and exponentially distributed impairments. Our main contribution is a general relationship between the total energy required for synchronizing a wireless sensor network and the clock offset estimation error by means of the transmit power, number of transmitted messages and average message delay, deriving the energy optimal lower bound as a function of the time synchronization quality and the number of hops in a multi-hop network.Fil: Briff, Pablo.     FPGA implementation of a critical railway interlocking system

    An interlocking is a railway system that automatically controls that changes in routes are safely managed, avoidingtrain crashes and derailments. This article presents an analysis of the state of the art technology used in several commercial interlocking equipment. Based on this analysis, design and implementation of an interlocking system architecture in FPGA technology is proposed. Appropriate techniques are applied to achieve the required level of security.     Pattern matching oriented photodetector image sensor with programmable interconnection between pixels

    We present a photodetector sensor that is able to perform preprocessing operations on the focal plane. Each pixel can be connected with any of its neighbors in order to implement detection zones defined by software. The output current of the sensor is a customizable weighted sum of the currents sourced at the defined detection zones. This characteristic leads to applications related to pattern matching.     Design of a portable system for continuous recording of arterial parameters during 24h

    The simultaneous measurement of pressure and diameter in a central artery during 24 hours could bring new information about the variability of the arterial mechanical properties. In order to perform these measurements in an animal, it is essential to count with a device that could acquire the signals from the sensors with a proper preconditioning circuit and then transfer them wirelessly to be stored and processed remotely. In this paper we present the prototype of a new portable and autonomous device, capable of being hosted on the animal's back.     A test platform for dependability analysis of SoCs Exposed to EMI and radiation

    With the IEC 62.132 proposal, the roadmap for standardization of Electromagnetic (EM) immunity measurement methods has reached a high degree of success. The same understanding can be taken from the MIL-STD-883 H for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) radiation. However, no effort has been made to measure the behavior of electronics operating under the combined effects of both, EM noise and TID radiation. For the reasons pointed out, the combined-effect measurements should be mandatory when dealing with Systems-on-Chip (SoCs) devoted to critical applications.
