In the St. Luke`s Day Oration organised by the Malta Branch of the British Medical Association on the 18th October 1966, Prof. R.J. Beck discusses the relation between Science, from a medical theme perspective, and literature within a medieval context. Three aspects of the medieval medicine – the dependence on astronomy, the doctrine of the humours and the physiognomia are discussed. This oration mainly focuses on particular aspects of Geoffrey Chaucer’s specific literary works: Chaucer's portrait of the Doctor in the General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales; The three principals in The Knight's Tale and The Man of Law`s Tale. Furthermore, captions from the book “Chaucer and the Medieval Sciences”, Clyde, W.C. (1960) are also outlined.peer-reviewe
The relationship between textual criticism and the synoptic question: a study based on the passion narrative
Since the eighteenth century, various hypotheses have been proposed by scholars in an attempt to solve the Synoptic Question. Most of these scholars have used more or less the same Greek text, yet they have come up with different conclusions. So, the question arises whether it is possible to find a trend in the manuscripts dating up to the fifth century which sheds additional clues on the relationships among the Synoptic Gospels. To address this, I have taken the text of the 27th edition of Nestle-Aland as the basis for analysis through the use of the colour-coded scheme proposed by the Karawara Gospels Project. However, in the same colour-coding exercise, the variant readings from the relevant manuscripts are also displayed. This facilitates the identification of any particularities.
Since the Synoptic Gospels contain too much to cover within the constraints of this research project, there is a need to select enough material to make the study relevant. The passion narrative has been selected on the basis of its content and the generally agreed closeness of the texts in all three Synoptic Gospels. So, all the sections, as defined in the Aland Synopsis, in the Triple Tradition are colour-coded and analysed. The relevant variant readings in these sections are also taken into consideration. To display the colour-coding more accurately, it was found that a commonly used and available format is more appropriate since printing is still not a viable alternative. Thus, all the colour-coded sections, as found on the attached CD ROM, are converted into the PDF format and the Adobe Acrobat Reader, widely available through the Internet, can be used to view them. The Legacy of Ulrich Beck in Asia: Introduction
This introduction briefly describes the relational trajectory between Ulrich Beck and Asia in the last few years. It draws particular attention to his last words about the role of Asia in the global risk community. Beck began to speak of the concept of metamorphosis in the 2014 Seoul conference as the correct key to understanding emancipatory catastrophism that he had expressed in the 2013 Potsdam conference. He was fascinated by the explanatory power of this concept and was driven to complete a book to explain the cosmopolitan change of the world from this perspective. With his advocacy of cities as cosmopolitan transformers, he urged Asian cities, particularly Seoul, to initiate United Cities of Asia' for a cosmopolitan cooperation for risk governance. Beck also suggested a parliament of risk actors' as a practical task to be realized in the future. In this introduction the author attempts to trace back the formation of these ideas by focusing on the interaction between Beck and Asia before his sudden passing.A&[email protected]
Paul in Acts and Epistles : the Miletus speech and 1 Thessalonians as a test case.
This study contributes to debates over the portraits of Paul in Acts and his epistles by considering the one Pauline speech to Christians in Acts, the speech to the Ephesian elders at Miletus (Acts 20: 18b-35). After surveying previous work, a two-way comparison is made, comparing the Miletus speech with (i) speeches by Jesus in Luke's Gospel, to see how Lukan it is, and (ii) 1 Thessalonians, to see how Pauline it is. A hierarchical method is outlined for identifying parallels. A study of the speech shows it to be a well-structured 'farewell', in which Paul commissions the elders for ministry after his departure to Jerusalem. The speech has four major themes: faithful fulfilment of leadership responsibility; suffering; the attitude to wealth and work; and the death of Jesus. Paul is offered as a model of Christian leadership for imitation. A comparison with Luke's Gospel identifies three passages which parallel the speech (22: 14-38; 12: 1-53; 21: 5-31), and four briefer passages (7: 38,44; 9: 2; 10: 3; 13: 32f). 22: 14-38 parallels the speech especially closely. A clear picture of Luke's view of Christian leadership emerges - modelled by Jesus, taught to his disciples, modelled by Paul, and then taught to the elders, the leaders of the next Christian generation. The comparison with 1 Thessalonians recognises the four major Miletus themes in the letter, and identifies a number of passages and ideas in the letter which have parallels in the speech. A clear picture of Christian leadership emerges, looking remarkably like that found in Luke-Acts. A conclusion reviews the argument, concludes that the speech is not dependent on the letter, and outlines results for debates about Paul in Acts and epistles

The relationship between depression and self-mutilation in adolescence
Plan BThe importance of the relationship between depression and self-mutilation in the adolescent population is becoming more apparent. Analysis of these two variables demonstrates that they are correlated with one another in the adolescent population. The present study examines the relationship between depression and self-mutilation. Two scales, the Beck Depression Inventory II (Beck, 1996) and the Self-Harm Survey (Conterio, Lader, & Bloom, 1998) were administered to participants and the scores were correlated to determine whether a relationship existed between the two variables. Participants were residents from a residential treatment center for adolescents. Data analysis using Pearson’s r correlation coefficients were used to determine if there was a positive correlation between depression and self-mutilation. The t-test for independent means was utilized to determine if there was a difference between gender and self-mutilation, age and self-mutilation, as well as length of stay in the residential treatment facility and self-mutilation. The means and standard deviations were also determined for these variables. Statistical differences were indicated based on these findings. Implications of this study as well as recommendations for future studies on depression and self-mutilation were discussed in detail
Social rights and economics : claims to health care and education in developing countries
The author analyzes contemporary rights-based and economic approaches to health care and education in developing countries. He assesses the foundations and uses of social rights in development, outlines an economic approach to improving health and education services, and then highlights the differences, similarities, and the hard questions that the economic critique poses for rights. The author argues that the policy consequences of rights overlap considerably with a modern economic approach. Both the rights-based and the economic approaches are skeptical that electoral politics and de facto market rules provide sufficient accountability for the effective and equitable provision of health and education services, and that further intrasectoral reforms in governance, particularly those that strengthen the hand of service recipients, are needed. There remain differences between the two approaches. Whether procedures for service delivery are ends in themselves, the degree of disaggregation at which outcomes should be assessed, the consequences of long-term deprivation, metrics used for making tradeoffs, and the behavioral distortions that result from subsidies are all areas where the approaches diverge.
