Cervia-Milano Marittima: the mercification of cultural regionalism

    No full text
Regionalism, intended as a strong link to uses and customs of a region, is usually translated into regional – or vernacular, or local, depending on authors – architecture. In many cases regional architecture is well identifiable inside its defined boundaries and building types are recognizable; sometimes these boundaries are flexible and unclear, depending on historic transformations, and architecture easily reflects external influences. Regional architecture is built over the years and identified by some characters that can vary from the repetition of entire building types to the presence of some architectural details, or specific materials, or colors, etc. Identifying typological variations inside a region is always a feasible operation: the stronger the cultural and political identity of a place, the stronger the characters of regional architecture and the success in the identification process. As an example of the construction, or the non-construction, of regional architecture over the years, here we talk about the town of Cervia, placed on the adriatic coast within the boundaries of the regione Emilia-Romagna, in Italy

In the intention of saving the historical sites is needed to put particular attention at the impact of the modernity with this particular ecosystems and give again life to the structures in respect of the needs connected with the modern living, without altering their character consolidated with time, with interventions correlated to the original building, typological, functional and technological characters. The present work was born from the will to realize an applicative methodology more respectful of the built, so as not to assist to a simple acritical transposition of the building conception, of the calculation models, of the materials, of the building techniques of the new architecture to the recovery interventions. In order to understand the technological and architectural evolution of the buildings of the past, and read through the rule of the art the gestures of the ancient builders, the Manuals and the Treaties edited from the origins to nowadays have been analysed. These are intended as sources and instruments of knowledge because every interventions on pre-existing structures is necessarily to start from the knowledge of the materials which compose them, and from the constitutive techniques of the period of their construction. In the intent of realizing interventions with a “predetermined” useful service life, they were analysed the materials of the tradition, their interactions and the possible phenomena of incompatibility to them bond. The methodology designed is based on a fundamental aspect of the project of recovery and/or restoration which is that cognitive, foreseeing investigation on site, through tests on site and in laboratory, the realization and then later on the validation of the intervention, through new tests and a periodical monitoring. The model proposed has been applied to a case study (The Sassi of Matera – Patrimony of UNESCO), emblematic site of the strong bind between architecture and natural environment, in which just because of the morphological conformation of the territory they were generated those architectures. Technological tests were executed to determine the physical chemical and mechanical characteristics of the materials used in the realization of the buildings of the Sassi (tufa, mortar, plaster) so as to evaluate the compatibility (chemical, physical, mechanical) with eventual new materials to use in phase of restoration and to validate the choices made during some interventions. This plan of surveys, accurately projected, presents as a further knowledge instrument and as a mean to programme any intervention of recovery in the respect of the ancient, without compromising the requisites of durability and safety. This research can also contribute to increment the casuistic of the tests to take on the masonry; in fact, in relation to all the problems which can enter a campaign of tests and investigations, it not only will be to think to an only kind of survey, but to an organic plan in which to compare the results, so as to have a conoscitive frame the more possible complete. Often only the compared analysis of more data, coming from different surveys, is possible to interpret the real phenomena and furnish the necessary parameters for the realisation of a correct intervention

As a constantly important feature of the architecture, in both formal and technical-building aspects, with which it has established a biunique relation, the stone has always been able to guarantee performance qualities suitable for living conditions in each single century. In time, the technological process, on one hand, and the complexity of anthropical activities, on the other, have caused the breaking of this relation, generating a more and more increasing demand for performances. This necessity, supported by an increasing complexity/stratification of building envelope and also by the use of materials no more directly available near the building area, has caused a change of the equilibrium between man and environment, consolidated in time. The study faces the recovery theme of the historical and monumental building, characterized by an “imposing” envelope, in which all the performance are entrusted at the same component and/or material (the stone masonry), pointing out the formal aspects, strongly correlated with static and technological ones. The complexity of this approach, also referred to restraints imposed by the built heritage, do not allow a wide range of solutions, and fix the necessity to value the envelope characteristic restoration and implements a possibility to developed the building performance. This is reversible and compatible choice, fully respectful of environmental characteristics. The aim of the research is to verify, by means of a series of tests for monitoring the “comfort indoor”, how it is possible to obtain performance requirements corresponding to quality standards that the residence requires, even in a particularly important architectural context, as the ancient “Sassi” of Matera

The ancient and hidden city of Matera offers the visitor a totally unexpected sight. It is a timeless city positioned on a steep hill, where groups of houses branch out starting from the flat and moving downwards in concentric circles thus forming the “Sassi”. Here there is an enormous building and architectonic heritage, abandoned for over 40 years and today the scene of slow and careful interventions to recoup this cultural monument which is under the patronage of UNESCO. The restoration and recuperation taking place must apply to the most rigid laws of preservation as regards the materials used, the preservation techniques and the traditional colours so as to avoid inappropriate use. Research focuses its attention on one of the main problems of the restoration of the Sassi of Matera: it is problematic dealing with the unpredictabilities of the structure, the systems and the functional project at the same time and conciliating them with the architectonic language fully respecting the balance between the use of the existing buildings and the new uses of the same buildings. The purpose of the study is the implementation of a methodological approach capable of guaranteeing the “vital continuity” of the building-historical heritage through an “appropriate use” of that heritage and an intervention of preservation which goes beyond the concept of basic protection in order to become a dynamic building activity of the future. The consistancy of the restoration therefore becomes much more than the moment of choosing when and how to intervene and which means to use but an accurate study of the requirements established by the formal and philological rules of preservation. The first results, which were also verified through experimental applications, demonstrate that a change in use may often permit the restoration of architecture in an appropriate way – fully respecting the pre-existing architectonic language - preserving the traditional typologies through the definition of new “types” and the integration of technological services

This research is to establish new insights and practical ideas in the field of rehabilitation toward saving the cultural heritage, landscapes and settings from the rapid changes and destruction factors in addition to the neglect and miss functional uses, therefore this research is formed for the sake of establishing a rehabilitation project that will cover two targeted areas of study, Matera in Italy and Umm-Qais/ Irbid in Jordan. Those areas are very challenging and simultaneously a stimulating case for taking new paths in dealing with the cultural heritage in terms of rehabilitation projects that they should take into consideration the topics of security, norms, stability, exceptions, and reforming regulations. The future of living goes across the need to recuperate and requalify buildings and parts of the city characterised by recognisable and definite architectural, technical and technological values. In this paper we are dealing with the historical centers recovery and protection within the contemporary environmental changes in some cities and highlighting some cases from Jordan and Italy to draw new methods in dealing with the disturbed and endangered historical centers by introducing new innovative scientific methodologies to revive the architectural heritage, simultaneously finding common characters between the old city and the new installations. Actually, the project is formed in two main dimensions the first one is the theoretical approach in dealing with the problems in the urban fabric and the second one regarding the practical matters of dealing with the cultural heritage. Those two dimensions will be discussed intensively and they will be integrated to meet the needs of the rehabilitation project and finally, to get out of a new practical methodology in dealing with the historic sites and buildings in an advanced and practical scientific manner. Creating a list of buildings, classification, and comparison of different aspects including forms, geometry, design, materials, constructive techniques and pathologies of the historic sites and buildings, in addition to their natural and cultural settings. Creating new standards for the new additions and installations within historic sites and buildings, adopting "the Common Character Scheme" not only for stimulating new designs, but also, as a total, in the evaluation and criticism of proposed schemes and completed projects that could be arisen in the future
