Paolozzi Reads Wittgenstein: Moments in a Research Process
This chapter argues that Wittgenstein wasn’t a mere pretext for Paolozzi and that it is impossible to fully understand the artist’s work without considering his relationship to the Austrian philosopher. Furthermore, Paolozzi – as an artist– recognized various aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought and let them come to light in a period when they were still concealed to the majority of interpreters with a philosophical background. In this sense, the author demonstrates that Paolozzi’s work fully belongs to the general story of Wittgenstein’s critical reception. In order to do so, the chapter attempts a reconstruction of the cultural environment where Paolozzi met Wittgenstein, meant both as the general philosophical reception of Wittgenstein in the 1950s and 1960s, as well as Paolozzi’s direct testimony on his encounter with the Austrian philosopher. Eventually, the author systematically analyses several ‘wittgensteinian’ works of Paolozzi to understand how much of these works is borrowed from Wittgenstein, but also what of Wittgenstein and which Wittgenstein lives and acts in them
Terra, storia e Weltbild.

Preface
Leibniz’s investigations into the structures of both natural and artificial languages, and into the impact of language use on human cognition, are widely acknowledged to have achieved real breakthroughs with respect to the standard early modern assumptions about these topics. Leibniz linked his linguistic interests with his views on mental activity by expounding the idea that language plays a fundamental role not only in communication but also in human cognition, insofar as words and signs in general serve as the indispensable thread for human thought. He used this insight into the linguistic component of thought to approach semantic phenomena such as metaphorical speech and ‘empty’ words or phrases, as well as psychological phenomena such as cognitive errors and the weakness of the will. Furthermore, his views on psycho-physical parallelism led him to explore the hypothesis that even abstract, conceptual representations have a physical counterpart in the human brain insofar as they are necessarily verbalized in a language or expressed in any other system of perceptible symbols
Esprimere i significati, esprimere le emozioni. Alcune considerazioni tra Wittgentstein, William James e Luigi Perissinotto
In his work, Luigi Perissinotto has constantly claimed that meaning is not primarily a mental state or a mental entity and that meaning should be understood as resulting from practices that happen between speakers, who basically share common activities and a language. This thesis is grounded in his reading of Wittgenstein's texts, and, I argue, it can be correlated with Wittgenstein's own somewhat analogous thought that bodily gestures - particularly changes in the face and movements of the hands and the whole body - are not expressions of emotions in the sense of outward manifestations of allegedly inner states of mind. In this paper, I contend that Wittgenstein's antimentalism may have been partly influenced by William James's claim in the Principles of Psychology that emotions should not be interpreted as psychic contents, that would be prior to their manifestations through bodily expressions, although Wittgenstein disagrees with James' alternative formulation, whereby emotions are said to be the feeling of bodily changes as they occur
