No full textIt seems that Λέανδρος (Leandros), written in 1834 by Panaghiotis Sutsos (1806-1868) and commonly regarded as the first modern Greek novel, is indeed the best expression, among contemporary novels, of the profound dilemma of Greek society after independence, namely the desire to display a classical profile and, at the same time, to adapt to the demands of modernity. In the novel, the author, a man of letters and an official of the new state administration, reflects at the same time the situation in contemporary Greece

No full textIl conte Pietro Gamba (1801-1827) era il fratello di Teresa Guiccioli, amante di Lord Byron, e membro della Carboneria italiana. Accompagnò Byron nella sua missione in Grecia nel 1823, e fu descritto dal poeta come "uno dei giovani più amabili, coraggiosi ed eccellenti" che avesse mai incontrato, "con una sete di conoscenza e un disinteresse che raramente si incontrano". Questo resoconto della missione, della morte di Byron e delle successive controversie sulla sistemazione delle spoglie, fu pubblicato nel 1825 e dedicato all'amico intimo di Byron, John Cam Hobhouse. Era basato sul diario di Gamba, che conteneva "un resoconto minuto di tutti gli eventi del giorno" con l'unico intento "di dare una semplice narrazione di ciò che Lord Byron fece in Grecia". Gamba morì di tifo nel 1827, mentre ancora si adoperava per l'indipendenza greca

and otherworldly visions of medieval culture with illustrious antecedents in Greek,
latin as well as in vernacular literature. This popular poem describes a narrator’s
catabasis which has been performed throughout a dream. in its internal composition a
basic eclecticism is perceived, as the author moves between the canvas and the heroic
poems of chivalry and the novelistic literature both from East and West, as well as he
does not neglect a likely inspiration from the visual arts. The very time of the related
events is not well clarified. The author uses the dream dimension to justify the choice
of a theme such as catabasis, in order to show the message of vanitas vanitatum, as a result
of sudden upheavals of Fortune
