Si è trattato di un convegno di grande interesse su un tema che merita di essere ripreso, strutturato e rivolto a un pubblico più vasto. Pubblichiamo qui le cinque relazioni della prima parte del convegno, che danno un quadro degli interventi manutentivi, istituzionali e di governance che hanno accompagna to la vita dell'Arsenale a partire dal 1980 circa. La comprensione del passato recente, analitica e sistematica, si dimostra elemento essenziale per la ripresa della questione "politica" (di politica culturale) per l'azione futura

No full textThe extensive literature on maritime museums mainly focuses on memory and heritage conservation aspects, while it lacks a focus on general economic issues, such as demand and supply, and management and organizational aspects. Hence, this article provides a preliminary overview of the situation of maritime museums in Europe, based on the development of a database of institutions belonging to this category. More specifically, we considered the geographical distribution of museums throughout Europe and some significant parameters linked to demand and supply, such as visitors’ numbers and the characteristics of the sites in which they are based (if arsenals and the presence of a floating area). The interest in these aspects is not merely academic: in addition to the original contribution to the literature on the field, this analysis aims to evaluate the potential of the realization of a maritime museum in the Venice Arsenal, in consideration of the potential demand, competitiveness and attractiveness, thanks to the comparison with the characteristics and performances of similar institutions already operating at a national and international level
The Venice Biennale at the Venice Arsenal: a potential conflict between creativity and historical preservation?
No full textIn situation where contemporary art exhibitions are using historical spaces, the rhetoric of creativity (and creative “industries”) faces a very intriguing conundrum. This chapter discusses the contention between different understandings and values given to meaning and processes of creativity and public accessibility. It follows the issues and contentions that arise around the use of part of the historical site of the Venice Arsenal for some of the Venice Biennale exhibitions. Core challenges are physical closure of historical spaces to the public, as well as the neglect of meaning inherent in the long and diverse existence of the Arsenal
Exclusion and inclusion in the spaces of the Biennale: a proactive reflection
No full textFor more than a century, the Biennale has represented a major cultural institution for Venice, one of the most important on the international stage. In recognising the need to maintain and strengthen this asset, we would like to use this chapter to initiate an argument for expanding the use of the Arsenale and the Giardini di Castello. Giving thought to the development of projects that would allow these two sites to be opened up, not only within the spaces and during exhibition periods, would, as well as benefitting Venice’s citizens, make the link between the Biennale and Venice even stronger and more dynamic. The route is not an easy one, not for the Arsenale, where such approaches have long been discussed, nor for the Giardini, where it would be a matter of acting on a complex contractual relationship between the municipality, the Biennale and the foreign countries involved. But the result would be extraordinary, in both locations. We, the authors, believe that this is not only possible, but necessary

No full textQuesto paper vuole ricostruire le logiche della conservazione e musealizzazione del patrimonio intangibile dei siti del patrimonio industriale, ovvero contenuti e forme della eventuale narrazione della loro storia aziendale all’interno di nuovi progetti di riuso. Le problematiche relative alle pratiche organizzative e gestionali possono essere preservate in diversi modi quali la pubblicazione di articoli e libri, l’organizzazione di archivi, la produzione di film documentari, come normalmente avviene nella ricerca di business o accounting history. Ma tali pratiche possono essere conservate e narrate anche in situ, all’interno cioè delle strutture fisiche rigenerate per i nuovi usi, con modalità di conservazione diverse rispetto alla tipologia del progetto di riuso. Con questo paper esploriamo quattro casi di siti di patrimonio industriale con l’obiettivo di capire come la storia aziendale del sito dismesso possa essere preservata all’interno del nuovo progetto.This paper aims to understand the logic behind the conservation and musealisation of the intangible heritage of industrial heritage sites, in other words, what part of the company’s history is narrated within the new reuse project and how it is narrated. The issues related to the organizational and managerial practices can be preserved in various ways such as publication of articles and books, organization of archives, production of documentary films, as normally occurs in business or accounting history research. But it can also be preserved and narrated in situ, within the physical structures regenerated for the new uses. The narration methods can differ in respect to the type of the reuse project. In this paper we explore four cases of the industrial heritage sites with the aim to understand how company’s history of the abandoned site can be preserved within the new project
Musei del patrimonio industriale fra conservazione e sostenibilità finanziaria
No full textQuesto paper mira a indagare come vengono gestiti i siti del patrimonio industriale riqualificati in musei pubblici, tramite l’analisi della governance e del loro financial business model sia in fase di progetto che in fase di gestione corrente del sito. Le testimonianze provengono da tre casi studio in Italia: il Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro in Toscana, la Manifattura dei Marinati di Comacchio in Emilia-Romagna e l’Ex Stabilimento Florio di Favignana in Sicilia. Tutti i tre casi vengono analizzati con l’approccio dell’income gap: quello in fase iniziale, previsto e coperto secondo
specifiche modalità contrattuali, e quello emergente nella fase della gestione
corrente, causato e risolto in modi diversi nei tre casi.This paper aims to investigate the management of industrial heritage sites set up as public museums, through the analysis of governance models and their financial business models, both in the project phase and the current management of the sites. The data comes from three Italian case studies: the Archaeological Mines Park of San Silvestro in Tuscany, the Manifattura dei Marininati di Comacchio in Emilia-Romagna and the Former Florio plant in Favignana in Sicily. All three cases are analyzed through the income gap approach: both the initial income gap (expected and covered according to specific contractual arrangements) and the income gap emerged in the current management phase (appeared and managed in different ways in the three cases)
