Documenting Vernacular Heritage to preserve diversity and sustainability

    No full text
During the last decades around the world many things have changed and sometimes lost in many historic centres. Residents want to update their own houses with the most modern features and, in many cases, there is the need to improve living standards. In Jodhpur, within the vibrant environment of its historic centre, inhabitants are trying to find more contemporary spaces for themselves by adapting the existing ones. While their love for these old settlements has not diminished, some of the residents have moved towards the new areas of the city in search of a modern lifestyle and more urban facilities such as schools, public transportation, etc. While the Jodhpur municipality wants to protect the vernacular heritage of the city, it is also clear that preservation policies must take into account that changes in the physical structure of old settlements are inevitable (and indeed have been continuing from ancient times). This, quite recently, has stressed the need to maintain control over these changes, driven not only by social inputs but also by economic activities. It’s always a matter of knowledge: on one hand preserving our vernacular heritage aims to conserve our cultural and social variety and transmit it to future generations, on the other hand we still have to fully understand the lessons that could be learnt from the study of these buildings and that can then be applied to contemporary settlements. It doesn’t have to be development versus conservation: the two issues should work together. It’s an uneasy path, full of economic and cultural obstacles, but still viable if we really want to preserve this important cultural heritage

During the Restoration and Cultural Heritage Days held in Ferrara on the 24th March 2022, it was organized the fourth edition of the Unione Italiana Disegno UID (Italian Association for Drawing) Symposium dedicated to the internationalisation and innovation of research entitled: “National and international experiences compared. Technology transfer, products and processes”. The research projects presented are the result of both competitive tenders and experiences triggered by scientific relations between research centres and institutes from countries of three continents: Africa, America, and Europe. Once again the event was presented as the fruit of the joint work of the two commissions, “Innovation” and “Internationalisation”, of the scientific association. The annual symposium aims to highlight applied research, carried out by groups in which UID colleagues are either coordinators or members of interdisciplinary teams, aimed at the development of innovative products or processes. The aim of this publication on the association's international research and innovation activities is to update the catalogue of the experineces and enhance them by publishing a report animated by a strong project spirit that, through discussion, can explore opportunities and channels for the promotion and strengthening of activities on the research, teaching, seminar and conference at an international level

Between History and Memory, the Blue Jodhpur: Experiences of integrated documention and survey techniques

This book describes the outputs of a cooperation path between the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara and CEPT University of Ahmedabad, India. When we started this experience, in 2013, we firstly identified the crucial features of a possible educational approach in dynamic and changing contexts such as those of Global South Countries. In order to address this topic, this book presents the results of the educational project developed in the Blue City of Jodhpur (India) as an academic cooperation involving professors, researchers and young students from the two countries, local authorities and professionals. The book aims at examining the role that heritage documentation and representation can play in emerging countries such as India if they are implemented as joint activities involving different stakeholders. Jodhpur, the so-called “Blue City”, is an outstanding example of the extremely relevant role of mixed research and documentation methods applied in a context where tangible and intangible heritage are closely linked and in a great risk of loss, due to population pressure, growing tourism and other threats. The book presents several on-field approaches concerning visions about cultural heritage documentation in terms of research, future directions, methodologies and working tools in the field of education for heritage preservation and enhancement. As the reader will understand the workshops experience have been organized over a period of five years, consisting in research and on-field surveys carried out by the group of students supervised by professors coming from the two institutions. During the last year the workshop was open to students with a background of design coming from the University of Ferrara as well as to students of urban management of CEPT University. In these workshops, different urban areas of the historical city center have been analyzed and surveyed, setting up a methodology able to meet the main needs of knowledge, understanding, refurbishment and conservation. In this direction, integrated survey processes were tested and applied in order to provide tools for an overall “reading” of the uniqueness of the local heritage and to point out possible conservation strategies

The contribution deals with the elaboration of a digital methodology to be applied on 20th century buildings in Brazil and India as toolkit for their conservation and enhancement. The research has gone through a careful planning and guided process able to integrate all information related to the geometry with details concerning materials, phases of realization, technical characteristics, and environmental. The undertaken research path has shown that the application of technologies used through appropriate methodologies can be an effective approach for the preservation and enhancement of 20th century architectures in “global south countries” and for the transmission of this heritage to future generations all over the world

Il ruolo delle comunità nella documentazione digitale e preservazione dello scenario urbano storico: una proposta di approccio inclusivo

The essay describes an approach developed by the author in different international realities in order to make communities aware of the importance of digital documentation and preservation of historical agglomerations, constituted prevalently by vernacular architectures of very high sociocultural value. With this purpose in mind, the concept of historic urban landscape is introduced, which identifies the whole territorial context it is set in, thus going well beyond the simple definition of historic centre and leading to the determination of an ensemble composed of characteristic features such as patterns, spatial organisation, visual relations. Interventions of contemporary architecture at world level, have undermined the urban scenario of many historic sites, marring them with projects out of scale and of dubious quality, for the last two decades. The text deals with the suggestions arisen from years of educational research conducted in extremely lively and mutable environments such as the historic centres of some Asian Countries, with an in-depth study on the case of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. In order to treat this topic the paper presents the feedback results of awareness raising projects developed in different historic centres, including academic cooperation, involvement of professors, researchers, local authorities, professionals and young intellectuals. The research stressed the importance of different visions on the documentation and representation of cultural heritage, which acquires different meanings based on local culture and traditions, in order to define future directions, low cost methodologies and working tools in the field of education for the conservation and enhancement of the historic fabric. The digitalisation techniques, also shared with a less specialised audience, were essential tools for setting up a methodology capable of meeting the main requirements of knowledge and comprehension. The activities and experimentations carried out have identified functional methods for the analysis, representation and diagnostics of vernacular contexts, demonstrating the potential of interdisciplinary activities implemented in fragile but at the same time extremely stimulating environments. The involvement of local communities showed to be a conditio sine qua non to achieve the objective of a shared and more aware preservation of the historic urban landscape

    Brasilia World Heritage Site

The National Assembly for Wales Richard Rogers Partnership, Cardiff, Galles
