    Understanding politics and society

    No full text
This book presents political sociology as a connective social science that studies political phenomena by creating fruitful connections with other perspectives. The relationship between politics and society is more complex than ever due to the emergence of new power structures, forms of conflict organization and management, and social practices of political participation. Several scholars describe this historical phase as the 'de-politicization of representative politics'. The book addresses classical themes of and approaches to political sociology, but also dedicates several chapters to contemporary developments within political sociology, including, for instance, the role of the internet and bottom-up political communication in social movements. In addition, the volume acts as a professional tool for those scholars and researchers that are beginning to study political processes from a sociological perspective. "This book joins a growing trend in both sociology and political science: After a phase in which the former turned to economics for its models, and the latter became increasingly presentist and non-comparative, both political scientists and sociologists have returned to their traditional juncture. This book links the two fields, with a deep historical and comparative approach and an encyclopedic bibliography. Ranging from Marx and Weber to the impacts of globalisation and social movements, it will be of great interest to specialists and students alike in both disciplines." (Sidney Tarrow, Cornell University, USA) "Such a book is urgently needed. Fabio de Nardis’ contribution is remarkable in his effort to bridge political sciences and sociology. This is a book that lays the foundations for a new 'connective social science'. The account of the co-evolution between politics and society is not only encompassing, by reflecting the encyclopedic knowledge of the author, but it is also thrilling in the way it draws on comparative insights from different disciplines and country contexts. Ultimately, the author is clear in his intent that the new reality of globalisation and the urgent political challenges it poses also call for a global re-orientation of a discipline: a political sociology for the emerging global society and politics." (Hans-Jörg Trenz, University of Copenhagen, Denmark) "This timely and erudite book masterfully demonstrates that, in order to understand current developments in politics, we must (re)turn to political sociology. Fabio de Nardis forcefully argues how we can build on its vast and diverse theoretical traditions, commitment to comparative empirical research and capacity to dialogue with other social sciences. The book will be extremely valuable to scholars to learn how the discipline has tackled key issues in state-society relations but also grasp contemporary tensions in a globalised era from populism and territorial cleavages to the IT revolution." (Virginie Guiraudon, Sciences Po, Paris, France) "The field of political sociology interconnects politics and society in several arenas, which growing but often unrelated bodies of literature have studied. This book is unique in identifying these multiple and complex interconnections, describing and examining the key research traditions and presenting them in a clear and systematic manner. It shows how politics is increasingly taking place in multiple societal domains and therefore how an interdisciplinary approach is needed to capture its multiple manifestations. Fabio de Nardis integrates many of the best insights from the fields of politics and sociology. First-rate awareness of these related subjects and the ability to interconnect them in such different domains as political communication, political parties and civil society organisations is the hallmark of this book, which makes it appealing to a broad audience." Deployment scenarios for cognitive radio

    No full text
This chapter presents a selection of potential deployment and application scenarios for Cognitive Radio and Software Defined Radio. The chapter goes beyond a simple review of scenarios by focusing on the viewpoint of several key players in wireless communication research and applications: regulators, researchers from the engineering and economic/business community, industrial partners and companies, either directly or through their involvement in national and EU-funded European projects. In this framework, two key issues related to scenario definition are addressed: • An analysis of players that determine the evolution of scenarios, including both technical and economic/business aspects; • Study of approaches for classification of CR deployment scenarios, with the aim of identifying a set of elements that allow creating taxonomy capable of fit-ting existing and new scenarios relevant to CR and SDR. The chapter opens with an analysis of scenarios as proposed by ITU (Section 2.1, authored by Mustonen and Matinmikko), followed by the vision of a wide set of EU projects on CR scenarios (Section 2.2, by Matinmikko and Paavola). The im-pact of different regulatory and environmental conditions on application sce-narios is addressed in Section 2.3, where Sridhar and Basaure provide a compari-son between feasible scenarios in India and Finland. Section 2.4, by Mueck, Sri-kanteswara, Macdonald and El-Refaey, moves to the analysis of upcoming scenar-ios in Europe focusing on the concept of Licensed Shared Access as defined based on activities carried out in ETSI and CEPT. Next, the chapter moves to aspects related to planning and classification of scenar-ios. In section 2.5 Medeisis and von der Emden propose a scenario plan-ning methodology aiming to support planning and classification of scenarios for Cogni-tive Radio and to help identify relevant business models. In Section 2.6 Medeisis, Holland and De Nardis propose an approach to the definition of a taxonomy of CR application scenarios, aiming at fitting present and future applications in a coher-ent framework. Finally, Section 2.7 by Cesar Gutierrez and Hamid Reza Karimi offers an example of very practical application scenario for deployment of White Space Devices in TV Bands as established by a harmonised European standard EN 301 598

Nowadays, the excessive use of the concept of "limit" risks to restrict ist heuristic scope to an a priori exaltation of its ambivalence. The author proposes three different perspectives (sociologica, evolutionistic and anthropological) on the social and cultural consequences of the "border line" or limit in post-modernity

This dataset includes data for NB-IoT networks as collected in two cities: Oslo, Norway and Rome, Italy. Data were collected using the Rohde & Schwarz TSMA6 mobile network scanner. 7 measurement campaigns are provided for Oslo, and 6 for Rome. The dataset contains the following data: Raw data for each campaign, stored in two .csv files. For a generic campaign , the files are: NB-IoT_coverage_C.csv including a geo-tagged data entry in each row. Each entry provides information on a Narrowband Physical Cell Identifier (NPCI), with data related to the time stamp the NPCI was detected, GPS information, network (NPCI, Operator, Country Code, eNodeB-ID) and RF signal (RSSI, SINR, RSRP and RSRQ values); NB-IoT_RefSig_cir_C.csv, also including a geo-tagged data entry in each row. Each entry provides information on a NPCI, with data related to the time stamp the NPCI was detected, GPS information, network (NPCI, Operator ID, Country Code, eNodeB-ID) and Channel Impulse Response (CIR) statistics, including the maximum delay. Processed data, stored in a Matlab workspace (.mat) file for each city: data are grouped in data points, identified by pairs. Each data point provides RF and CIR maximum delay measurements for each unique combination detected at the coordinates of the data point. Estimated positions of eNodeBs, stored in a csv file for each city; A matlab script and a function to extract and generate processed data from the raw data for each city. In addition, in the case of the Rome data a script to interpolate missing data in the original data is provided, as well as the corresponding interpolated data in a second matlab workspace. The interpolation rationale and procedure is detailed in: L. De Nardis, G. Caso, Ö. Alay, U. Ali, M. Neri, A. Brunstrom and M.-G. Di Benedetto, "Positioning by Multicell Fingerprinting in Urban NB-IoT networks," Sensors, Volume 23, Issue 9, Article ID 4266, April 2023. No full text
In this work authors are analyzing mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) and cognitive radio ad-hoc networks (CRAHN) solutions from routing protocols point of view, in order to identify promising directions of the future research, which could be developed towards energy efficient routing protocols for future cellular networks. Literature studies are covering cognitive solutions implementation in cellular environment. Standardization developments were studied, in order to identify industry's views on the energy efficiency aspects in networks, as well as on the alternative offloading solutions. Based on the compilation of the research and industry overviews, various deployment scenarios are considered, including inter-UE, intra-operator, as well as inter-operator case. Number of concepts was identified, including radio resource management solutions, proposals related to the introduction of energy efficiency related performance indicators in networks, or cooperative schemes in inter-operator networks, which could be studied from the energy efficiency point of view. Proposed ideas are basis for further research work. © 2013 IEEE
