The Silent War. "Newsreels" and "Cinema postcards" from country at war

When did the newsreel formula originate in Italy? When did events start to be presented with the informative regularity of the newsreel, rather than according to the system of the “Cinema of Attraction” - typical of the non fiction film, that is to say a film which shows to the public events in their uniqueness –? When did the Italian cinema turn to a semantization of the visible, configuring it as a real news, instead of a spectacularization of the event? On a European level, the First World War can be seen as a turning point. But in the Italian context, the turning point can be located even in a previous time: that is to say, during the the Italo-Turkish War (September 28, 1911- October 18, 1912), a conflict fought using a huge deployment of forces, within the territory of (the now called) Lybia. Even though it was undertaken with a colonialistic intent, this war can be considered, for many reasons, the first move toward the breakingoff of the European balance, which had been almost unchanged for decades. Notwithstanding the geopolitical factors, these two historical moments (the First World War and the Italo-Turkish War) have in common the display of a new relation to the territory as well as to the tactical-logistic structure designed to recompose the social fabric spread on that territory. For the first time, on that occasion new military phenomena occur, connected to modernity: territory practicable in a tridimensional way, not just by infantrymen or horse and mechanized troops, but even by military aircrafts (used for photographic/cinematographic patrols as well as for raids), and istantaneous speed of communication, which has now become a reality, thanks to the creation of the first regular service of military radiotelegraphy on a large scale, due to the work of the Military Engineers. On that occasion, even non fiction film changes its modalities of interaction. Under an agreement with the Colonial Office, the cinematographer Luca Comerio alternates traditional shooting, odeporic and exotic, with more innovative war shooting, including them into a serial system designed to inform, at regular intervals, italian citiziens about the development of the war. The agreements, which is being formalized, with the archive photos and film the historic office of the Italian Army,we have reason to believe that bringing to light important elements able to shed some light on this important page of history

Performance evaluation of measurement data acquisition mechanisms in a distributed computing environment integrating remote laboratory instrumentation

The usage of laboratory andmeasurement instrumentation of any kind, from large complex equipment to networks of sensors that collectively appear as a distributed measurement device, has become of relevant importance in all branches of experimental sciences. Owing to the increasing networking capacity and access ubiquity, this bulk of instrumentation is ever more frequently accessed remotely by users who want to perform experiments, collect and process experimental data, analyze and interpret results. With reference to a remote instrumentation architecture deeply rooted in distributed computing paradigms such as grids and clouds, we evaluate the performance of mechanisms for the collection of data generated by instruments, in order to assess the capabilities of remote instrumentation services. In the presence of instruments generating measurements at high rate, which must be delivered to a multiplicity of users, publish/subscribe dispatching (push) mechanisms are shown to outperform pull-based ones

Signaling events during male germ cell differentiation: bases and perspectives

In all species, reproductive function depends on the ability of the individual to produce functional differentiated gametes. Spermatogenesis is a cyclic process in which diploid spermatogonia differentiate into mature haploid spermatozoa. Thus from a genetic point of view, spermatogenesis can be divided into two phases, namely the diploid and haploid phase. Indeed, this complex differentiation process is still more intriguing since primary spermatocytes, if genetically diploid, are functionally tetraploid, while elongating spermatids, the germ cells undergoing the most dramatic morphological changes, if genetically haploid, become functionally anucleate due to ongoing condensation of chromatin resulting in an inactive nuclear DNA. This multi-step differentiative pathway is dependent on a specific environment provided by the anatomical and cellular relationships that take place in the testis and more specifically within the seminiferous tubules. Already, early anatomists (mind comes to Enrico Sertoli and Gustaf Retzius) were fascinated by the mixed cellular composition of the testis correctly deciphered as a whole of interacting and interdependent cell types despite the fact these belong to two well-established and different cell lineages, i.e, the somatic and germinal line. Since their time (the XIX century) up to-day a conspicuous bulk of experimental work and a relative massive bibliographic documentation have been provided. From this it stands out : a) a sophisticated role played by the cyclic hormonal control elicited by the hypothalamic-pituitary axis; b) the structural membrane specializations of Sertoli-germ cell communications; c) the existence and action of a paracrine and autocrine testicular regulative secretion; d) a regulation of germ cell gene expression, highly specialized both at transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and translational level; e) an active participation of the haploid genome in the final steps of cell differentiation. Each of these points has been the matter of several more and less recent reviews to which the present author hands back in the course of this note. However all these points, although topics of separate and extensive treatises, are conceptually jointed by a ‘leitmotiv’, that is, the intracellular transduction of an exogenous signal evoking a specific stimulatory/inhibitory, proliferative/differentiative event. The spirit with which the present author interpreted this minireview was to recall some points to which to draw attention having as a scenario the complex process of male germ cell differentiation in mammals
