Carlos Castaneda, Anthropology and the Construction of a Magical Mexico

    No full text
In this filmed lecture, Dr. Ageeth Sluis (associate professor of Latin American history at Butler University) discusses her research on American author Carlos Castaneda. In 1960, Castaneda found himself eye to eye with Juan Matus, a Yaqui shaman, in a bus station in the border town of Nogales, Arizona. Castaneda, then a graduate student in anthropology at the University of California-Los Angeles, met Don Juan because he sought an informant on the indigenous use of psychotropic plants. Castaneda supposedly got more than he bargained for when he became the shaman\u27s apprentice. Describing the separate realities of a secret indigenous world, Castaneda\u27s first three books (beginning with The Teachings of Don Juan) became international bestsellers and propelled Castaneda into the world of fame and notoriety. Sluis explores how Castaneda\u27s work provides a unique window on a series of related phenomena: the rise of a New Left, counterculture spirituality, a politicization of anthropology, new understandings of indigenous identity, and the creation of a magical Mexico

Castaneda\u27s Mesoamerican inspiration : the Tonal/Nagual, the cardinal points and the birth of contemporary Toltec spirituality

    No full text
On the basis of his most celebrated bestsellers, Carlos Castaneda has usually been analyzed as a precursor of the emerging pre-Harnerian Neo-Shamanism, one that was chiefly inspired by the cultures of the so-called Oasisamerica and the spirituality of the Great Plains. Nevertheless, in his transitional period (the 1970s and the early 1980s), Castaneda also explored ancient Mesoamerican symbolism. The fruit of this new inspiration mainly consists of three concepts – the Tonal/Nagual, the symbolism of the cardinal points, and the Toltec. The term "Nagual" as well as "Toltec" persisted long after Castaneda\u27s death and proved to be one of the most popular traits of the author\u27s doctrine. Such contemporary celebrity authors as Miguel Ruiz owe their idea of the Toltec to Castaneda

Conditions of a solitary bird : (an analysis of the works of Carlos Castaneda)

The following is a “total critical” examination of four of the works of Carlos Castaneda; The Teachings of Don Juan, A Separate Reality, Journey to Ixtlan, and Tales of Power. This mode of analysis is based on Professor Robert Reid III's Ph.D. dissertation contention that works of literature, instead of being analyzed from a single perspective should be examined from several perspectives to insure a more encompassing evaluation of a work's literary merits. I have taken Professor Reid's thesis and used it as a starting point for this study, and have, therefore, divided this paper into chapter sections with each section dealing with a separate aspect of the Castaneda works. Within this framework I have strived to interrelate the individual sections not only to one another but each section to three overriding assumptions that I have made about the works in question. The first assumption is that the Castaneda books are literature (whether they are factual accounts, as the author contends or fictional works as many believe). The second assumption is that these books are worthy of study from all the perspectives, including the total critical perspective. And third, I have assumed that the four books, although enjoyable as units each unto themselves, should be read together as a total unit to grasp these works' full impact. The conclusions I have arrived at in this study are that these three assumptions are facts and the importance of this study therefore is derived as much from the process itself (the total critical analytic process) as from the results from the inquiry.California State University, Northridge. Carlos Castaneda: Evisited from a Post Materialistic Perspective

    No full text
Based on a re-reading of the anthropologist Carlos Castaneda´s classical texts, this article breaches the subject of conceptual convergences between the original worldview of America, in particular, the shamanic understanding that this author presents about reality, energy, consciousness and the world of spirits, and some of the main contributions of post-materialistic science. This new epistemological perspective is introduced synthetically, together with two key subjects: the notion that the universe is not physical matter but essentially energy, and the even more controversial idea that consciousness expands beyond the human brain. This comparison allows, as a conclusion, to summarize the coinciding points between the new holistic science and the shamanic vision of the spirituality.Fil: Llamazares, Ana María. Freeze-thaw environment of precast concrete crossties and effect of vibration on fresh materials

High performance concrete is typically designed to achieve high strength and low permeability. These suppositions lead practitioners to install high performance concrete in outdoor environments assured that members will remain durable over scores of years. One such outdoor environment is in railroad lines where timber ties (alternatively known as crossties or sleepers) are being replaced with high performance concrete crossties. Additionally, concrete crossties are being installed in burgeoning high speed rail networks across the United States of America. It has been observed, however, that these high performance concrete crossties are subject to multiple deterioration mechanisms including freeze-thaw damage. This early degradation in critical transportation infrastructure necessitates a better understanding of the durability of high performance concrete in wet, wintry climates. In particular, the concrete crossties have been found to degrade at the rail seat area where the crosstie is physically joined to the rail. Among several failure mechanisms, including abrasion and hydraulic pressure cracking, it is hypothesized that the dense configuration of the rail line, pad, clips, and crosstie leads to pooling of water at the underside of the pad. This stagnant water sits atop the concrete crosstie at the rail seat area and can permeate into the material leading to scaling and freezing-thawing damage in colder climates. In this study, the resiliency of high performance concrete crossties against freezing-thawing damage is assessed in a collaborative effort with researchers at Kansas State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In this dissertation, specifically, the extent of internal moisture and temperature fluctuations of instrumented crossties installed in ballast is examined. Half-space approximations are applied to predict the fluctuation of internal conditions as affected by external environmental conditions. Additionally, this dissertation also examines the stability of chemically entrained air bubbles in fresh concrete when the fresh material is subjected to varying time and degree of vibration. The propagation and attenuation of the vibratory peak acceleration as a function of distance from the vibrating source and the volume content of aggregate is studied and compared against the extent of air loss and aggregate segregation as evidenced in polished, 2-dimensional sections. Summarily, the mutual instances of critical moisture saturation and freezing temperatures in concrete crossties are experimentally measured and predicted. The predictive models are modified to create a concrete crosstie freeze-thaw susceptibility index based on historical weather data. This susceptibility index better informs owners of concrete crosstie infrastructure of environmental design criteria for freezing-thawing damage potential. The vibratory experimental results lend insight into rheological phenomenon that can to enhanced guidelines for the consolidation of non-conventional concrete that optimizes compaction while mitigating the loss of entrained air and aggregate segregation. Taken together, these two research thrusts enhance the civil engineering community’s understanding of the durability and resiliency of high performance concrete exposed to cold climates.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. A focus on health equity requires community driven qualitative methods within research. Giving voice to diverse narratives and stories through performance are key to learning about underserved populations. Focusing inquiry on those who are generally excluded from research can serve as community-engaged scholarship. This dissertation is based in performance pedagogy to help reclaim transformative research experiences by providing a platform for legitimacy and authenticity in community-engaged scholarship. The unique contribution this dissertation makes to cultural studies/social science is a re-envisioning of the autoethnographic methodology and MyStory together and their dissemination through performance pedagogies. Specifically, the aim of this dissertation is to incorporate autoethnographic performance into a popular narrative with cultural viewpoints of the lived experience as praxis for community health as a new way of approaching community-engaged research. I argue that legitimizing human and personal features of the lived experience is a way to understand culture and the politics of dealing with certain adversities i.e. illness, alcoholism, violence, and injury, as found in the residual effects of trauma in the body – a site of “doing and an undoing” (Harris, 2017, p. 26). I build from a notion that autoethnography has significant involvement in relationship to MyStory (Ulmer, 1989, 1994 [as foundational]; Denzin, 2014). The MyStory serves as a technique/prompt developing the autoethnographic performances-ethnodramas within the dissertation text— as expansive to the field of KCH. The work of this dissertation stems from personal experience, as well as through developed insight from my work as community-engaged scholar in the Little Village community; and methods demonstrated in the Seminar on Advanced Interpretive Methods, SOC 580, 2014-2016, at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in [2014-2016]. Literature in this dissertation is founded in the discipline of interpretive qualitative methodology and greatly influenced by the works of Norman Denzin (1992, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006a, 2006b, 2008, 2009, 2014), Raymond Carver (1976, 1981, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1997) and Dwight Conquergood (1984, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1998, 2013).Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2021-08-01Limited Restriction Lifted for Item 113070 on 2021-11-27T10:15:09Z
