The Tradeoff Between Growth and Redistribution: ELIE in an Overlapping Generations Model

The ELIE scheme of Kolm taxes labour capacities instead of labour income in order to circumvent the distortionary effect of taxation on labour supply. Still, Kolm does not study the impact of ELIE on human capital formation and investment. In this paper, we build an overlapping generations (OLG) model with heterogenous agents and endogenous growth driven by investment in human capital. We study the effect of ELIE on education investment and other aggregate economic variables. Calibrating the model to French data, we highlight a tradeoff between growth and redistribution. With a perfect credit market, ELIE is successful in reducing inequalities and poverty, but it is at the expense of lower investment in education and slower growth. In an economy with an imperfect credit market where individuals cannot borrow to educate, the tradeoff between growth and redistribution is not overturned but is less severe. However, it is possible to overturn completely that trade-off simply by changing the base of taxation for the young generation which is equivalent to subsidising education.Education, Growth, Redistribution, Kolm

Valutazione ecografica del tendine di Achille e dell'entesi rotulea nei giocatori di calcio e basket: potrebbe essere utile per prevedere lo sviluppo di lesioni muscolari e tendinee?

BACKGROUND: Achilles and patellar entheseal abnormalities are frequently seen in athletes and healthy subjects at ultrasound (US) evaluation. However, to our knowledge, no studies have been performed to assess the possible asso-ciation between the presence of subclinical entheseal abnormalities and the possibility to develop muscular injuries in professional athletes. The aim of this study was: to compare US entheseal abnormalities in a group of athletes with age and sex-matched healthy controls and to assess the 12 months risk for the development of symptomatic muscular and tendon injuries at lower limb. METHODS: Consecutive soccer and basket players attending our clinic for routine controls were asked to participate. US evaluation of Achilles tendon and patellar tendon insertion at tibial tuberosity was performed in order to evalu-ate the presence of subclinical enthesopathy. The evaluation of tendons and entheseal thickness was also performed. Finally, athletes were followed up for 1 year and the development of muscular and tendon injuries at lower limb was evaluated. RESULTS: Forty athletes and 20 healthy controls were enrolled for this study. Overall, entheseal US abnormalities were found in 25 (62.5%) athletes. Both Achilles tendon and enthesis thickness were significantly higher in respect to healthy controls. During the follow up, 6 (15%) athletes suffered a muscle injury at lower limb and 1 (2.5%) an Achil-les tendon lesion. None of the enrolled controls reported any injuries. Logistic regression analysis did not find any statistically significant associations between the presence of entheseal abnormalities and the development of injury. However, a tendency to develop muscular injuries at lower limb was found in those athletes with Achilles tendon abnormalities (odds ratio [95% CI]: 6 [0.83-43], P=0.07). CONCLUSIONS: A tendency for an association of US Achilles tendon enthesopathy with muscular lower limb injuries was found. This may suggest that screening of asymptomatic individuals could be of use in identifying those who are at higher risk of developing injury, which may allow targeted modifications of training or other preventative regimens. Hunting behavior of Late Neanderthals in the North-east of Italy. Results from zooarchaeological analysis of unit II assemblage of Grotta Maggiore di San Bernardino (Berici Hills, Vicenza).

Grotta Maggiore di San Bernardino is located in the Berici Hills, in northeastern Italy, at about 135 m above sea level. The cavity was subject of systematic excavations carried out by the University of Ferrara in 1959-1964 and between 1986-1993. Field investigations explored a stratigraphic series of about 4 m thickness, which includes 8 main units dating from MIS 7 to MIS 3. The focus of this work is the zooarchaelogical analysis of Unit II (MIS3). It records an intense human occupation attested by hearths, temperate type associated faunal remains and Mousterian lithic implements. Bone assemblage shows a prevalence of medium and large sized ungulates: the most frequent species are roe deer, red deer, wild boar, moose and giant deer, followed by bovids and caprids. Carnivores are less numerous, represented by different species and the cave bear is the most represented. Were recovered also rhinoceros and beaver remains. The presence of Castor fiber together with waterfowl (duck, geese) and fishes indicates the existence of humid environments and watercourses in the surroundings. Bone taphonomy has identified high incidence of burned remains and of anthropic actions ascribable to different stages of the butchering process like skinning, dismembering and filleting. Several fragmentary bone shafts show typical stigmata due to their use as retouchers for flint tools. As Faunal assemblages similar to Grotta San Bernardino unit II can be observed in the Mousterian levels of other sites of the Berici Hills (Grotta di Paina, Grotta del Col della Stria, Grotta de Nadale) and Lessini Mountains (Grotta di Fumane, Riparo Tagliente). Grotta di San Bernardino represents a further case of Neanderthal behavior in terms of subsistence. Additional faunal analyses, will cast new light on the site and clarify its relationship with the territory, the organization of the site itself, the activities, the hunting areas and the chronology of the occupation
