The politics of fashion: perceptions of power in female clothing and ornamentation as reflected in the sixteenth-century Chinese novel Jin Ping Mei

    No full text
This thesis examines issues of female power and influence in sixteenth-century China focusing on how women and their roles were perceived in the changing social environment of the mid-late Ming dynasty. Using aspects of a New Historicist approach, information from contemporary literary and historical sources are analysed alongside each other. With its emphasis on the lives of women and preoccupation with the description of material objects, the late Ming novel Jin Ping Mei forms an important element in the thesis. China in the sixteenth century saw expanding urbanisation, the emergence of a new wealthy merchant class, increasing visibility of women and a questioning of traditional morality. Fashion consciousness, as one of the most conspicuous aspects of the new material culture, is a possible indicator of these trends. Traditional Western theories contend that fashion began in the particular context of Renaissance Europe. However, this study argues that a similar fashion awareness existed in China too, and was manifested in a competitive striving for social status, in this case specifically among women. In contrast to previous studies which downplayed the impact women had on defining traditional Chinese culture, this thesis demonstrates how women and their sartorial choices began to redefine the boundaries of material culture, influencing literati discourse which, in turn, re- influenced female behaviour

Caenorhabditis elegans microtubule-severing complex MEI-1/MEI-2 katanin interacts differently with two superficially redundant beta-tubulin isotypes

The microtubule-severing protein complex katanin is required for a variety of important microtubule-base morphological changes in both animals and plants. Caenorhabditis elegans katanin is encoded by the mei-1 and mei-2 genes and is required for oocyte meiotic spindle formation and must be inactivated before the first mitotic cleavage. We identified a mutation, sb26, in the tbb-2 β-tubulin gene that partially inhibits MEI-1/MEI-2 activity: sb26 rescues lethality caused by ectopic MEI-1/MEI-2 expression during mitosis, and sb26 increases meiotic defects in a genetic background where MEI-1/MEI-2 activity is lower than normal. sb26 does not interfere with MEI-1/MEI-2 microtubule localization, suggesting that this mutation likely interferes with severing. Tubulin deletion alleles and RNA-mediated interference revealed that TBB-2 and the other germline enriched β-tubulin isotype, TBB-1, are redundant for embryonic viability. However, limiting MEI-1/MEI-2 activity in these experiments revealed that MEI-1/MEI-2 preferentially interacts with TBB-2– containing microtubules. Our results demonstrate that these two superficially redundant β-tubulin isotypes have functionally distinct roles in vivo

The treewidth of 2-section of hypergraphs

    No full text
Let H=(V,F)H=(V,F) be a simple hypergraph without loops. HH is called linear if fg1|f\cap g|\le 1 for any f,gFf,g\in F with fgf\not=g. The 22-section of HH, denoted by [H]2[H]_2, is a graph with V([H]2)=VV([H]_2)=V and for any u,vV([H]2) u,v\in V([H]_2), uvE([H]2)uv\in E([H]_2) if and only if there is fF f\in F such that u,vfu,v\in f. The treewidth of a graph is an important invariant in structural and algorithmic graph theory. In this paper, we consider the treewidth of the 22-section of a linear hypergraph. We will use the minimum degree, maximum degree, anti-rank and average rank of a linear hypergraph to determine the upper and lower bounds of the treewidth of its 22-section. Since for any graph GG, there is a linear hypergraph HH such that [H]2G[H]_2\cong G, we provide a method to estimate the bound of treewidth of graph by the parameters of the hypergraph

New Roads for Patron-Driven E-books:Collection Development and Technical Services Implications of a Patron-Driven Acquisitions Pilot at Rutgers

    No full text
Collection development librarians have long struggled to meet user demands for new titles. Too often, required resources are not purchased, while some purchased resources do not circulate. E-books selected through patron-driven plans are a solution but present new challenges for both selectors and catalogers. Radical changes to traditional technical services workflows are required, and selectors must modify the selection process to give more choice to the user. Rutgers University librarians have adopted an innovative new technical services workflow and collection-development model to manage a successful, patron-driven acquisitions project for e-books in the fields of math and computer science. This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis Group in Journal of Electronic Resources Librarianship on 13/12/2011, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/1941126X.2011.627043

Spectral properties of the eccentricity matrix of graphs

    No full text
The eccentricity matrix E(G) of a graph G is derived from the distance matrix by keeping for each row and each column only the largest distances and leaving zeros in the remaining ones. The E-eigenvalues of a graph G are those of its eccentricity matrix E(G). The E-spectrum of G is the multiset of its E-eigenvalues, where the largest one is the E-spectral radius. In this paper, we proceed to study the algebraic properties of the E-spectrum. In particular, we give a condition to connected graphs with cut vertices so that their eccentricity matrices are irreducible. The latter partially answers the problem given in Wang et al. (2018). We determine the lower and upper bounds for the E-spectral radius of graphs, and we identify the corresponding extremal graphs. Finally, we investigate the least E-eigenvalue of graphs, and list the E-eigenvalues of trees with order 8. © 2019 Elsevier B.V
