Theoretical modelling of yield stress in cold-rolled and annealed AISI 420 steel:Dependence on rolling pre-strain

With increasing demands for high-quality metal products, manufacturing processes have become more complex, generally involving both forming and heat treatment stages. During these stages, the developed flow stress after forming evolves throughout heat treatment, leading to residual stress redistribution, which can cause undesirable and unpredictable shape changes. To better understand the evolution of yield stress through these stages, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted on samples taken from cold-rolled and cold-rolled-and-annealed AISI 420 steel strips. Additionally, microstructural changes after annealing were characterized using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD). The study examined various thickness reductions during cold rolling, while the annealing process was standardized to 760°C for 15 minutes. A two-step theoretical model was developed to correlate rolling pre-strain with the resulting yield stress after annealing, taking into account the combined effects of residual work hardening and the Hall-Petch relationship

Coupled DIC-crystal plasticity study of microscale strain localization in AISI 420 steel

This work investigates microscale strain localization and slip activity in ferritic AISI 420 stainless steel using an integrated approach of scanning electron microscopy-based digital image correlation (SEM-DIC), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and crystal plasticity (CP) modeling. A novel aspect of this study is the direct coupling of multi-step SEM-DIC with CP modeling to link experimental strain fields with simulated slip activity. The microstructure, consisting of ferritic grains with finely dispersed carbides, exhibits early strain localization that intensifies under increasing global strain, ultimately forming interconnected shear bands. Statistical analyses indicate that localized deformation does not arise from any single microstructural parameter, such as grain size, grain boundary misorientation, maximum Schmid factor, or carbides’ effect, but rather from the combined influence of multiple constraints. Specifically, poor geometrical alignment of slip transfer at misaligned grain boundaries, restricted slip paths between ferrite grain boundaries and carbides, and limited deformation accommodation in smaller grains collectively promote strain localization. To further analyze slip transfer conditions, an accumulated-shear methodology is introduced to identify the dominant slip systems by integrating the loading history from multi-step DIC measurements, thereby enabling direct comparison with the corresponding CP-modeled variables. This method overcomes the transient limitations of velocity-gradient-based methods and provides a more reliable means of evaluating slip activity. Additionally, a CP model based on the DIC region of interest (ROI) microstructure reveals local stress heterogeneities at the microscale. This work offers insights into the mechanisms of microscale strain localization in ferritic stainless steel and highlights the critical role of microstructural features in triggering local deformation behavior

Investigating carbide characteristics effect on multiscale mechanical behavior of AISI 420 steel using crystal plasticity simulation

Understanding the impact of precipitates on the mechanical behavior of material is crucial for effective material design and application. This research focuses on AISI 420 stainless steel, characterized by a ferritic matrix with dispersed carbides in its annealed state. This study employs a multiphase crystal plasticity (CP) model to systematically investigate the influence of variations in carbide characteristics, including their fraction at grain boundaries (GBs), number, average size, and volume fraction, on multiscale mechanical behavior. The workflow includes generating representative volume elements (RVEs) from the microstructure of the as-received AISI 420 steel, calibrating constitutive parameters within the CP model, and validating the CP-RVE model against experimental textures and mechanical properties. A novel method is introduced to capture anisotropic behavior by accurately replicating the experimental approach. Subsequently, diverse RVEs are generated by modifying carbide characteristics to evaluate their impact on stress-strain curves, anisotropic behavior, and micromechanical interactions, while preserving the characteristics of ferrites. The results are compared with experiments and theoretical insights. The findings reveal that an increase in either the fraction of carbides at GBs or the carbide volume fraction enhances the steel's strength. Empirical equations are derived to predict these effects on mechanical properties efficiently. Moreover, increasing the carbide volume fraction leads to more inhomogeneous strain and stress distributions in both carbides and ferrites, while reducing anisotropy (Lankford coefficient). This study highlights the potential of the CP-RVE model as a tool for exploring macroscale behavior and studying the influence of microstructural features.<br/
