Conceptual Modeling
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you to theproccedings of the 23rd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER2004). This conference provided an international forum for technical discussionon conceptual modeling of information systems among researchers, developersand users. This was the third time that this conference was held in Asia; thefirst time was in Singapore in 1998 and the second time was in Yokohama,Japan in 2001. China is the third largest nation with the largest population inthe world. Shanghai, the largest city in China and a great metropolis, famous inAsia and throughout the world, is therefore a most appropriate location to hostthis conference. This volume contains papers selected for presentation and includes the twokeynote talks by Prof. Hector Garcia-Molina and Prof. Gerhard Weikum, andan invited talk by Dr. Xiao Ji.This volume also contains industrial papers and demo/poster papers. Anadditional volume contains papers from 6 workshops. The conference also featured three tutorials: (1) Web Change Managementand Delta Mining: Opportunities and Solutions, by Sanjay Madria, (2) A Surveyof Data Quality Issues in Cooperative Information Systems, by Carlo Batini, and (3) Visual SQL – An ER-Based Introduction to Database Programming, byBernhard Thalheim. The technical program of the conference was selected by a distinguishedprogram committee consisting of three PC Co-chairs, Hongjun Lu, Wesley Chu,and Paolo Atzeni, and more than 70 members. They faced a difficult task inselecting 57 papers from many very good contributions. This year the number ofsubmissions, 293, was a record high for ER conferences. We wish to express ourthanks to the program committee members, external reviewers, and all authorsfor submitting their papers to this conference

[email protected] 1 Inadequacy in association rule mining for stock movement prediction Among all the data mining problems, discovering association rules from large databases is probably the most significant contribution from the database community to the field [1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 7]. The most often cited application of association rules is market basket analysis using transaction databases from supermarkets and departmental stores. We can discover rules like R 1 : 80% of customers who bought diaper also bought beer (diaper ) beer (20%; 80%)), where 80% is the confidence level of the rule and 20% is the support level of the rule indicating how frequent the rule holds. Association rules for prediction The same concept can be applied to other applications as wel..

Web searching and Σ2 queries
In the terminology of Logic programming, current search engines answer Sigma1 queries (formulas of the form where is a boolean combination of attributes). Such a query is determined by a particular sequence of keywords input by a user. In order to give more control to users, search engines will have to tackle more expressive queries, namely, Sigma2 queries (formulas of the form ). The purpose of the talk is to examine which directions could be explored in order to move towards more expressive languages, more powerful search engines, and the benefits that users should expect
