A Sociolinguistic perspective to Bilingual and Multilingual Education: An interdisciplinary view
This thesis aims to take a sociolinguistic approach to the numerous ways adults learn a second language effectively. It will take a comprehensive view of how individuals successfully understand and acquire a language and the historical significance behind current second language trends.

Tumour chemo sensitivity assays: an investigation into the susceptibility of cells to chemotherapeutics
To evaluate and identify new candidate cancer drug targets, there is an ongoing need for a reliable, sensitive and quantitative assay that enables the analysis of larger numbers of compounds in preclinical research. This thesis has developed, and optimized a sensitive enzyme-release assay for monitoring natural cytotoxicity. It measures the release of the intracellular enzyme adenylate kinase into the culture supernatant after membrane rupture and is evaluated as an indicator of cell death. This assay was proven to correlate and compete with currently used methodologies for the assessment of cytotoxicity and with its superior sensitivity; convenience and in expense, it should be applicable to the study of other cytotoxicity reactions. The resulting ToxiLight® kit is now being sold world-wide and rapidly became the top selling product for Lonza Bio Science with many references to its use in publications.
It was proven from this investigation that to truly comprehend the effect a cytotoxic drug has on cells, two assays are required in combination; one to measure cytotoxicity and a second to measure viability. The two most sensitive kits tested in this study, the ViaLight® Plus assay and the newly designed ToxiLight® assay were used in combination to monitor the effect of commonly used cytotoxicity drugs on melanoma cells. It was hoped to find both a sensitive and resistant cell line for further analysis by MALDI-MS. The study revealed how cells of the same histological and tissue type can respond differently to the same anticancer drug with one cell line revealing cell death after treatment and another remaining unaffected. This is representative of how individual patients may respond differently to the treatments given in vitro and explains the vast biochemical heterogeneity of tumour cells and the complexity involved in developing anticancer drugs that will specifically kill tumours arising from a given cell. The primary melanoma cells used for the research were representative of the clinical situation and were a kind gift from the OYSTER (Outcome and Impact of Specific Treatment in European Research in melanoma) tissue bank; with the established cell lines obtained from ESTDAB. A selection of three of these cell lines (Ma Mel 28, Ma Mel 26a and MEWO) were chosen after investigating their sensitive/resistant nature to certain chemotherapeutic drugs and were further investigated with a novel agent currently in its early stages of drug trials, the histone deacetylase inhibitor, trichostatin A.
To investigate this resistance further, MALDI-MS was performed on the chosen melanoma cell lysates. The results demonstrated that good quality proteomic data could be achieved from cell lines and that it is possible to generate discriminatory protein profiles that correlate with the cytotoxicity assays when analysed using artificial neural networks (ANNs). Through the analysis of the proteome the ANNs was able to train itself using the raw dataset from the MALDI-MS analysis and distinguish differences between those samples that were drug-treated and those that were left untreated. The differences between the two classes of treated and untreated cells revealed biomarkers that may correlate to cell death and thus the effect of the drug trichostatin A.
These findings could lead to the discovery of proteins that are up regulated when a patient is responding to therapy. This could be of prognostic and therapeutic benefit to patients enabling them to find out in the early stages of treatment if they are responding to a given treatment; the long term outcome leading to personalised treatments for individuals in which a decision can be made on the best suited treatment
The ceremonies of Charles II's court
PhDThis thesis examines the question of how the restored monarchy used the ceremonies of court in the
period 1660-1685. It is concerned with those rituals which took place regularly within the royal
palaces, that is to say the ceremonies of the Chapel Royal, of healing, of reception and audience,
dining and entertaining, and the rituals which took place within the privy apartments, including the
royal lever and coucher. The ways in which these rituals operated over the course of the reign are
considered - with close reference to their physical setting - as is their significance as expressions of
royal power.
The contention of the thesis is that the ceremonies of the Restoration court are a neglected subject
deserving of serious study, and that by examining them real insight can be gained into the changing
nature of monarchy, the personality of Charles II and the politics of his reign. The thesis argues,
contrary to traditional accounts of his reign, that Charles II took the formal exchanges of court life
very seriously, that their performance was intimately connected to the politics of the period and that
they were crucial to the way in which he projected his own majesty
Reforming nationhood : England in the literature of the Tudor imperial age, 1509-1553
The thesis explores the relationship between empire and nationhood in the literature of the Royal Supremacy. In so doing, it contests the assumptions of the social historians Michel Foucault, Benedict Anderson, Jürgen Habermas, and Ernest Gellner - all of whom have dated the dawn of the nation-event on our Western political horizons from the end of the eighteenth century. The thesis invites important outcomes for our perception of early Tudor political culture, and for our wider appreciation of the origins of English national identity. It differentiates the Habsburg imperial idea from the Tudor ideology of empire inherited by Henry VIII upon his accession in 1509. It then distinguishes both these imperial ideologies from Henry's pretensions, as enshrined in the 1533 Appeals Act, to
empire in the English Church. Despite these differences between the Habsburg and Tudor ideologies of empire, each received identical expression in propaganda that identified both England and the Holy Roman Empire with Virgil's Golden Age. The first two chapters explore the Golden Age motif in pageantry produced for the joint London Entry of Henry
VIII and Charles V (1522), and for the Entry of Anne Boleyn in 1533. Chapter Two concludes that the function of the 1533 Entry as propaganda for the Royal Supremacy was
undermined by the similarities between its stagecraft and that of the 1522 Entry
The use of corporate reputation in the development of brand image strategy in the Taiwanese pharmaceutical industry
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This doctoral research aims to investigate the reputation building process of companies and to examine the applicability of western-developed theories about the uses of corporate reputation in a non-western context. It is the first study that synthesises three theories (value creation, strategic resources and corporate communication) to examine the strategic consequences of the uses of corporate reputation.
Corporate reputation is an attribute or a set of attributes ascribed to a firm and inferred from the firm’s past actions. It is the belief of market participants about a firm’s strategic character (Weigelt and Camerer, 1988). Also, corporate reputation is the public’s cumulative judgement of a firm over time (Roberts and Dowling, 2002).
The review of theoretical literature indicates the uses of corporate reputation by business organizations can be theorized along six dominant paradigmatic perspectives: 1-public relations; 2-marketing; 3-management, 4-economic; 5-sociological; 6-finance and accounting. The uses of corporate reputation in these six paradigms are comprehensively discussed. The objective of this study is to establish the use of corporate reputation in the development of brand image strategy. A review of the uses of the concept of corporate reputation is discussed in detail in chapter 2.
The review of the literature also identified a research gap by showing that scarce research has been conducted on how these three main functions (value creation, strategic resources and corporate communication) affect a company’s brand positioning strategy. The following research question thus is proposed: How do (Taiwanese pharmaceutical) companies use their corporate reputation to develop a brand image strategy?
The research hypotheses based on three theories (value-based theory, resource-based theory and integrated marketing communication theory) appear in Chapter 3. The research question is constructed theoretically, and then a conceptual model, which begins with three antecedents of corporate reputation and simultaneously illustrates the outcomes of their use, are discussed.
The construct of the uses of corporate reputation has three dimensions: value creation, strategic resources and corporate communication. Each of these three dimensions includes several items. The items were proposed based on the previous researchers’ summaries and the qualitative interview. The researcher will then depict the proposed research conceptual framework and a number of hypotheses that will be further investigated and tested.
Then the quantative study was completed by providing the data analysis and the results were explained. A multi-stage procedure was involved in this research. First, data examination and screening to prepare for subsequent quantitative analyses and then the descriptive statistics were presented. Second, a reliability test was performed on measurement scales to ensure that they achieve an acceptable level of reliability for further analysis. The resulting solutions were then re-assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Finally, PLS (Partial Least Squares) was used to test the hypothesized relationships between the research constructs as postulated in the conceptual model, and to assess the overall goodness-of-fit between the proposed model and the collected data set.
The researcher then discusses the validation of the measurement model and the research findings. The findings are then further discussed in terms of the contribution to marketing theory and relevance to marketing managers. Then the items of adapted scales were subjected to several rounds of adjustments and were finally found to possess acceptable measurement properties. Reliability and construct validity tests indicated that all scales satisfied widely accepted criteria such as the minimum reliability of 0.7. The results of scale purification will be discussed. And an evaluation of the research hypotheses and their significance are summarized, the findings of all hypotheses testing will be reviewed and compared with previous research.
According to the research findings, the hypotheses that value creation, as one dimension of corporate reputation, has a positive impact on brand segmentation, brand differentiation and brand positioning are all accepted. The hypotheses that strategic resource, as one dimension of corporate reputation, has a positive impact on brand segmentation and brand differentiation are rejected. However, the hypothesis that strategic resource, as one dimension of corporate reputation, has a positive impact on brand positioning is accepted. The hypotheses that corporate communication, as one dimension of corporate reputation, has a positive impact on brand segmentation and brand differentiation are both accepted. The hypothesis that corporate communication, as one dimension of corporate reputation, has a positive impact on brand positioning is partially supported. Finally, the hypothesis that the (see in Table 5.18) moderating effect of price policy on corporate reputation has a positive impact on brand image strategy is partially but negatively supported.
This thesis makes a significant contribution to the study of corporate reputation of firms in the Taiwanese pharmaceutical industry from the robustness of the qualitative and quantitative data collection
