Interview with Jean Francois Revel, author
Jean Francois Revel, the author of Without Marx or Jesus, has been quoted as saying, "The United States is now a microcosm for all of the problems man faces." In this interview with Meredith Watts, he discusses a new kind of revolution which could produce successful change without violent upheavalGrayscaleSoun
Beauregard House
General view; The architect Francois Correjolles, whose creole French family emigrated from St. Domingue (Haiti), added new American Federal elements while preserving some of the traditional creole plan. The Beauregard-Keyes House, built in 1826 for wealthy auctioneer Joseph Le Carpentier, is a fine example of a raised, center-hall house. It is named for two of its former tenants, Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant (P.G.T.) Beauregard and author Frances Parkinson Keyes. General Beauregard lived in the home from 1866 to 1868 while he was president of the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad. The home features twin curved staircases, leading to a Tuscan portico. The garden's design duplicates the original 1865 plans. Nodal surfaces and interdimensional degeneracies
The aim of this paper is to shed light on the topology and properties of the nodes (i.e., the zeros of the wave function) in electronic systems. Using the "electrons on a sphere" model, we study the nodes of two-, three-, and four-electron systems in various ferromagnetic configurations (sp, p2, sd, pd, p3, sp2, and sp3). In some particular cases (sp, p2, sd, pd, and p3), we rigorously prove that the non-interacting wave function has the same nodes as the exact (yet unknown) wave function. The number of atomic and molecular systems for which the exact nodes are known analytically is very limited and we show here that this peculiar feature can be attributed to interdimensional degeneracies. Although we have not been able to prove it rigorously, we conjecture that the nodes of the non-interacting wave function for the sp3 configuration are exact
Adolf Loos, Comment doit-on s'habiller ? (2014)
Alien theory : the decline of materialism in the name of matter
The thesis tries to define and explain the rudiments of a 'nonphilosophical'
or 'non-decisional' theory of materialism on the basis of a
theoretical framework provided by the 'non-philosophy' of Francois
Laruelle. Neither anti-philosophical nor anti-materialist in character, non-materialism
tries to construct a rigorously transcendental theory of matter by
using certain instances of philosophical materialism as its source material.
The materialist decision to identify the real with matter is seen to retain a
structural isomorphy with the phenomenological decision to identify the real
with the phenomenon. Both decisions are shown to operate on the basis of a
methodological idealism; materialism on account of its confusion of matter
and concept; phenomenology by virtue of its confusion of phenomenon and
logos. By dissolving the respectively 'materiological' and
'phenomenological' amlphibolies which are the result of the failure to effect a
rigorously transcendental separation between matter and concept on the one
hand; and between phenomenon and logos on the other, non-materialist
theory proposes to mobilise the non-hybrid or non-decisional concepts of a
'matter-without-concept' and of a 'phenomenon-without-logos' in order to
effect a unified but non-unitary theory of phenomenology and materialism.
The result is a materialisation of thinking that operates according to matter's
foreclosure to decision. That is to say, a transcendental theory of the
phenomenon that licenses limitless phenomenological plasticity,
unconstrained by the apparatus of eidetic intuition or any horizon of
apophantic disclosure; yet one which is simultaneously a transcendental
theory of matter, uncontaminated by the bounds of empirical perception and
free of all phenomenological circumscription
Exchange functionals based on finite uniform electron gases
We show how one can construct a simple exchange functional by extending the well-know local-density approximation (LDA) to finite uniform electron gases. This new generalized local-density approximation functional uses only two quantities: the electron density ρ and the curvature of the Fermi hole α. This alternative “rung 2” functional can be easily coupled with generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) functionals to form a new family of “rung 3” meta-GGA (MGGA) functionals that we have named factorizable MGGAs. Comparisons are made with various LDA, GGA, and MGGA functionals for atoms and moleculesThe author thanks Narbe Mardirossian for useful discussions, the Australian Research Council for a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award No. (DE130101441) and a Discovery Project Grant No. (DP140104071), and the

Is There Market Power in the French Comte Cheese Market?
An NEIO approach is used to measure seller market power in the French Comté cheese market, characterised by government-approved supply control. The estimation is performed on quarterly data at the wholesale stage over the period 1985-2005. Three different elasticity shifters are included in the demand specification, and the supply equation accounts for the existence of the European dairy quota policy. The market power estimate is small and statistically insignificant. Monopoly is rejected, as well as weak forms of Cournot oligopoly. Results appear to be robust to the choice of functional form, and suggest little effect of the supply control scheme on consumer prices.Supply control, NEIO, protected designation of origin, Marketing,
