The Public Antagonist and Martyr: Reading A.H.J. Dautzenberg against Literary Typologies
Abstract
I analyze the public authorship of Dutch writer A.H.J. Dautzenberg. I disentangle some of the main threads in his literature and public persona, singling out three socio-cultural issues on which he has publicly taken a stance in both his literature and his non-fiction texts. I base my analysis on three types of sources: Dautzenberg’s works of literary fiction, appearances in the media, and non-fictional texts. I argue that the case of Dautzenberg brings out the limits of any typology of engaged authorship, autonomous authorship, or stardom, and that his veiled emphasis on factuality under the flag of fiction to an important extent explains the efficiency of his style of media performance, and helps the author generate attention for his work. I conclude that in the final instance, both his work and his media performances are subordinate to his societal engagement, and that therefore, Dautzenberg is a public antagonist first, and an author only secondarily.</jats:p
Personalities and risk taking behaviour
Since behavioural biologists found evidence that behaviour of individuals is much less flexible than previously thought (R’eale et al. 2007) evolutionary and theoretical biologists developed theories how personalities evolve and how different personality traits coexist in one population (Dingemanse et al. 2010). In this thesis I collect empirical evidence for the model that Wolf et al. 2007 introduced. His model suggests that personality traits are related to differences in risk-taking behaviour. Variation in individual prospects should co vary with risk taking behaviour causing some individuals to show risk prone and other risk aversive behaviour types. I found evidence for this theory in the Namibian rock Agama (Carter et al. 2010), Bluegill-sunfish (Wilson et al. 2009), sticklebacks(Bell. 2006) and wild fiddler crabs (Reaney et al. 2007), but not in great tits (Van Oers et al. 2004), European house crickets (Wilson et al. 2010) and sticklebacks (Bell 2006). In other words there are studies that show a correlation in the occurrence of risky-personality traits within a species, but other studies don’t. This thesis concludes that the relation between different risk-taking behavioural traits is not yet clear. The ecological context influences the correlation between risky-behavioural traits and future research has to provide answers on a more quantitative basis.

Usable and adaptable business software
Background: To be able to adapt to the fast changing markets, companies require flexible systems to support them in their daily business. Instead, most Enterprise Support Software is made for a specific task, not designed to match the needs of a specific company, let alone adapt to changing requirements. To test if this can be changed, the question in this project is: Is it possible to simplify the development of business software, without being restricted in possibilities, to be able to create custom business software that is usable and adaptable? In this project a solution will be developed that will be used in a case study in order to answer this question. - Case study: T. E. Johnston & Co (Holland) b.v. is a small company active in the harbour of Rotterdam. They are a cargo superintendent company, supervising the surveys of transshipments of edible oils for their clients. They outsource tasks to external surveyors as well as laboratories, collect their results and combine these in a survey-report, containing quantity and quality checks. To support them in this, they use standard office applications and paper based records to maintain overviews and create reports. This requires them to enter the same data repetitively in several documents. They are therefore looking for an application that can reduce this overhead and prevent them from making errors. Since there are no existing solutions to support them in their activities, they would like to take part in this project and see if a supporting application can be created. Their work process was being investigated and in consultation with them requirements for a support system were set up. Based on this a design was made that, after approval, was implemented. - Methods: Two requirements that companies commonly set are support for their workflow when managing their entities (like products and clients) and keeping an overview of these. Tools and solutions were searched to fulfil these, while allowing for a reduced development time and improved maintainability, so current and future specifications of a company can more easily be incorporated. A technique called 'administration generation' was found, that introduces an abstraction layer to reduce the repetitive tasks seen during development. Unfortunately no implementation of it was found that completely matched all the requirements. Therefore it was decided to use the fully pluggable PHP framework Symfony, in combination with the very flexible JavaScript framework Ext JS. Symfony has an implementation of the 'administration generation'-technique and allows to extend it to make it match the requirements, while Ext JS is integrated to improve the user experience. Both Symfony and Ext JS are known because of their good documentation and active community, which turned out to be very valuable. - Results: At the moment a plugin for Symfony has been released as open-source software and is already used within several companies to support them with their business. It is capable of generating detailed edit- and general overview-screens of a company's data, which for T. E. Johnston & Co (Holland) b.v. means they now only have to enter data once to automatically get overviews and be able to generate reports based on their requirements. The adaptability has already proven itself, when after testing adjusted requirements could be implemented within a day.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
RubbleViewer: Communicating for situation awareness in the urban search and rescue domain
The current way of communicating situation awareness through sketches has been found not sufficient as is seen during exercises of usar.nl. The proposed solution RubbleViewer presents the personnel with a 3d map where they can annotate information on. This map of a collapsed building is calculated by running photogrammetric algorithms on an image dataset captured by a sUAV flown over a real disaster area. RubbleViewer is found useful during an evaluation with usar.nl personnel.Man Machine InteractionElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer ScienceAutomatische Verkeerssysteme
Rethinking classic starling displacement experiments: evidence for innate or for learned migratory directions?
In an attempt to encourage the discourse on sources of individual variation in seasonal migration patterns and the microevolution of bird migration, we here critically examine the published interpretations of a now classic displacement study with starlings Sturnus vulgaris . Based on the ring recoveries after experimental displacement towards the south and southeast of Dutch capture sites of over 18 000 hatch‐year and older starlings, in a series of analyses published in Ardea from 1958 to 1983, A. C. Perdeck established that displaced starlings showed appropriately changed orientations only when they were experienced. During both southward and northward migration, released adults navigated to an apparently previously learned goal (i.e. the wintering or the breeding area) by showing appropriately changed orientations. Juveniles showed appropriate directions when returning to the breeding grounds. In contrast, during their first southward migration displaced juveniles carried on in the direction (and possibly the distance) expected for their release at the Dutch capture site. From the mid‐1970s this work has become cited as evidence for starlings demonstrating ‘innate’ migratory directions. If the definition of innateness is ‘not learned by the individual itself’, then there is a range of non‐innate influences on development that are not ruled out by Perdeck\u27s experimental outcomes. For example, young starlings might have carried on in the direction that they learned to migrate before being caught, e.g. by observing the migratory directions of experienced conspecifics. We argue that, despite over 60 citations to Perdeck as demonstrating innate migratory directions, the jury is out
