L.B. Loomis letter to Warren G. Harding, December 29, 1919
In this letter dated December 29, 1919, L.B. Loomis of the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco writes to Senator Warren G. Harding to state his support of Harding's campaign to secure the Republican presidential nomination. He states that the winning candidate will be in the "minds and imagination of the people," and will continue to campaign hard up to election day. According to Loomis, the next president should be able to manage foreign affairs with the United States as his top priority, and not the rest of the world, and develop closer working relationships between governmental departments to better serve American industry and business. Loomis sees Herbert Hoover, former director of the United States Food Administration, as a strong opponent, and says that Hoover's work feeding children, homeless or orphaned as a result of World War I, has given him many supporters. Loomis suggests Harding assemble a team of men to go around the country to talk to laborers, lawyers, colleges and universities, businessmen, politicians, and newspaper editors to talk about his values and how he plans to run the country as the next president.
This letter is part of the Warren G. Harding Papers (MSS 345). This collection includes correspondence, business records, and other materials documenting Harding’s business career as owner and editor-in-chief of The Daily Marion Star, as well as the various stages of his political career. A significant portion of the collection, and what’s available on Ohio Memory, highlights his 1920 presidential campaign, spanning just before publicly announcing his candidacy to handily defeating Ohio Governor James M. Cox in the election. Correspondents include both Ohio and national businessmen, political figures, and ordinary citizens writing with questions, support, congratulatory notes, and campaign advice. Some of the most interesting insights into the tumultuous political climate in the U.S., the extreme factionalism within the Republican Party in Ohio, and Harding’s campaign strategies are described in letters between Harding and his campaign manager, Harry M. Daugherty. Some of the topics addressed include women’s suffrage, Prohibition, the League of Nations, African American representation and issues, and lingering peace negotiations following World War I
Warren G. Harding letter to L.B. Loomis, January 13, 1920
In this letter dated January 13, 1920, Senator Warren G. Harding writes to L.B. Loomis of the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco in response to his letter of December 29. Harding thanks Loomis for his ambitious suggestions and will share them with his campaign manager Harry Daugherty. Loomis discussed Herbert Hoover and his supporters at great length in his letter, and Harding doubts Hoover would secure the Republican nomination due to his democratic-leaning ideals and blurred party lines. Harding agrees with Loomis' stressed importance of reaching young American voters, and likes his suggestion of gaining publicity through the Saturday Evening Post, an Indianapolis magazine with a national scope.
