Sensitivity of a 3-D surface mapping system to environmental perturbations

A newly developed three-axes coordinate measurement machine, coupled with a confocal laser sensor, has been housed in a temperature-controlled laboratory.Initial results of three-dimensional (3-D) measurements taken off a NAMAS (TVational Accreditation of Measurement and Sampling) certified sphere were found to vary significantly with large errors.Evaluation of the possible sources of errors included drift in ambient temperature, positioning inaccuracies, and mechanical set-up errors such as orthogonality and straightness of axes. This paper investigates the sensitivity of the measurement system towards environmental perturbations, looking particularly at the influence of temperature drift. The laboratory's temperature was logged over a period of time and the data subsequently charted

LOH of Chromosome 6q compared with LOH of 17q and 18q in ovarian cancers: relationship to p53 expression and clinicopahological findings

    No full text
In 41 ovarian epithelial tumors (7 borderline and 34 invasive), loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of chromosomes 6q, 17q, and 18q was examined using 4 microsatellite markers: ER (6q 25-1), BRCA1 (17q21), DCC (18q21), and D18S58 (18q23). The LOH was compared with clinicopathological findings, including p53 and ER expression. In borderline tumors, LOH and p53 expression were never found, while in invasive carcinomas LOH and p53 were found in 71% and 59% of cases, respectively. In particular, in invasive carcinomas 6q LOH represented a marker distinguishing two groups of tumors; those with 6q LOH were only of serous histotype and at advanced stages (III/IV). No significant difference was found for any of genes in 5-year survival of the patients. No correlation was found between ER expression and ER LOH, as well as between biological aggressiveness and 17q and/or 18q LOH. We conclude that p53 and LOH of the investigated loci distinguish borderline from invasive ovarian carcinomas; moreover, the..

<p>Kaplan-Meier survival analyses of <b>(A)</b> LOH at <i>17p13</i>.<i>3</i> locus of <i>RPH3AL</i>, <b>(B)</b> LOH at <i>17p13</i>.<i>1</i> locus of the <i>TP53</i>, and <b>(C)</b> combinations of LOH at <i>RPH3AL</i> and <i>TP53</i>, and <b>(D)</b> survival proportions of patients with LOH at both <i>RPH3AL</i> and <i>TP53</i> loci <i>versus</i> the patients without LOH at both loci. Log-rank P-values and the number of patients at risk (<i>N</i>) in each group at different time periods. Positivity of <i>RPH3AL</i> LOH, but not <i>TP53</i> LOH, was associated with patient poor survival. Patients with LOH positivity at both <i>RPH3AL</i> and <i>TP53</i> loci had poor survival relative to patients with LOH at <i>TP53</i> and without LOH at <i>RPH3AL</i> (P = 0.008) as well as those that were LOH negative at both loci (P = 0.014). Also, the subgroup with LOH positive at <i>RPH3AL</i> and LOH negative at <i>TP53</i> locus had poor survival, similar to the patients that were positive at both loci (P = 0.101), suggesting that <i>RPH3AL</i> LOH is associated with patient prognosis.</p

Electrostatic control of dual-core optical fibre with NEMS functionality

    No full text
A nanomechanical optical fibre with a mechanically adjustable dual-core structure has been demonstrated recently. The realisation of equivalent systems with an electric actuation would allow for low-loss all-fibre reconfigurable optical networks. Here we investigate the feasibility of nanoelectromechanical actuation of the dual-core fibre. Such optical systems with mechanically adjustable or controllable components are well known in the form of silicon micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS) and are widely used in various optoelectronic devices, for example 2-D optical switches and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers
