    Edward VI

    No full text
Edward VI was the son of Henry VIII and his second wife, Jane Seymour. He ruled for only six years (1547-1553) and died at the age of sixteen. But these were years of fundamental importance in the history of the English state, and in particular of the English church. This new biography reveals for the first time that, despite his youth, Edward had a significant personal impact. Jennifer Loach draws a fresh portrait of the boy king as a highly precocious, well educated, intellectually confident, and remarkably decisive youth, with clear views on the future of the English church. Loach also offers a new understanding of Edward’s health, arguing that the cause of his death was a severe infection of the lungs rather than tuberculosis, the commonly accepted diagnosis. The author views Edward not as a sickly child but as a healthy and vigorous boy, devoted to hunting and tournaments like any young aristocrat of the day. This book tells the story of the monarch and of his time. It supplies the dramatic context in which the short reign of Edward VI was played out—the momentous religious changes, factional fights, and popular risings. And it offers vivid details on Edward’s increasing absorption in politics, his consciousness of his role as supreme head of the English church, his determination to lay the foundation for a Protestant regime, and how his failure in this ambition brought England to the brink of civil war

    Tracking Loach: Politics, Practices, Production

Tracking Loach presents a ground-breaking and unique contribution to the study of cinema. Archibald was granted unprecedented access to observe one of world cinema’s most celebrated and controversial filmmakers, Ken Loach, while he was making the 2012 feature The Angels Share, which received The Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This book draws on this knowledge to offer a first-hand account of the director’s celebrated working methods, supplemented with insights gleaned from the British Film Institute’s Loach archive, and analysis of his wider output and film-related political activity. Archibald has been ‘Tracking Loach’ for over three decades, as film viewer, film critic and film academic, and this inside perspective not only offers fresh insights into Loach’s films and how they are made, but also highlights the benefits of production studies to the understanding of cinema more broadly

Stacking characteristics of close packed materials

    No full text
It is shown that the enthalpy of any close packed structure for a given element can be characterized as a linear expansion in a set of continuous variables α_n, which describe the stacking configuration. This enables us to represent the infinite, discrete set of stacking sequences within a finite, continuous space of the expansion parameters H_n. These H_n determine the stable structure and vary continuously in the thermodynamic space of pressure, temperature, or composition. The continuity of both spaces means that only transformations between stable structures adjacent in the H_n space are possible, giving the model predictive as well as descriptive ability. We calculate the H_n using density functional theory and interatomic potentials for a range of materials. Some striking results are found: e.g. the Lennard-Jones potential model has 11 possible stable structures and over 50 phase transitions as a function of cutoff range. The very different phase diagrams of Sc, Tl, Y, and the lanthanides are understood within a single theory. We find that the widely reported 9R-fcc transition is not allowed in equilibrium thermodynamics, and in cases where it has been reported in experiments (Li, Na), we show that DFT theory is also unable to predict it.Some files in the LJ_Data subdirectory end in a string of the form "." followed by a combination of the letters 'a', 'b' and 'c' indicating the stacking configuration (i.e. not a filename extension as such). Which Side Are You On? Ken Loach as an Author and Non-author

    No full text
Ken Loach represents this unusual type of authorship, where the author totally gives his film to the people he portrays and wants to support and thus gives up the title of the “Master”. As a declared socialist he believes in the mission of a filmmaker - the cinema should be about us, the people, it shouldn’t be about the exploitation and consumerism. Although his films, in terms of style, aesthetics and issues can be perceived as belonging to the category of social realism, and although Loach himself doesn’t want to be treated as an author and rejects this label, his directorial signature seems to be very strong and specific. Paradoxically this signature comes out in the moments when Loach stops directing but rather follows the situation and lets the scene to evolve in its own direction. That happens in Kes, when Billy talks to the class about his kestrel or in Land and Freedom, when the soldiers of the international brigades and the Spanish peasant discuss the collectivization of the land. Kosińska tries to depict this specific kind of authorship - Ken Loach appears as a director for whom the people and their problems seems to be the most noble material for the cinema, and solidarity of the community seems to be the only way to fight with the oppressive system

The Old Oak, A bitter farewell (Ken Loach, 2023)

Critics have generally been quite harsh on what is, perhaps, the latest film by British filmmaker Ken Loach and his regular screenwriter, Paul Laverty. His cinema has always lived up to the label of "social cinema", as he never departed from these noble intentions and history will always remember him as an artist committed to the causes of the working classes and the disadvantaged. The Old Oak Tree is too, the film responds to the interests that mark the guidelines of Loach's cinema throughout a long career; although perhaps what has changed is not Ken Loach who always seeks to make a cinema of flesh and blood, identifiable in his critical positions, but the times, the sensibilities and the audiences.Depto. de Ciencias de la Comunicación AplicadaFac. de Ciencias de la InformaciónFALSEpu

Detection of hybridization between two loach species (Paramisgurnus dabryanus and Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) in wild populations

    No full text
Artificial interspecific hybrids between large scale loach P. dabryanus and tetraploid pond loach M. anguillicaudatus (Cobitidae, Cypriniformes) are viable. To detect the occurrence of possible natural hybridization, genetic analyses by using microsatellite markers were performed for natural populations of large scale loach and pond loach, the reciprocal laboratory hybrids, and "supposed hybrids" with ambiguous morphology. The fertility of the artificial hybrids was also tested. At one diagnostic microsatellite (Mac50), one out of 20 "supposed hybrids" was identified to be F-1 hybrid between the two loach species because it had the same genotype as that of the laboratory hybrids. The triploid hybrids between the two species were confirmed to be female-sterile. The results show that rare hybridization has occurred between diploid large scale loach and tetraploid pond loach in nature although it may have little effect in genetic introgression. This study is helpful for fish conservation and encourages further investigation on natural hybridization and introgression of loaches.Artificial interspecific hybrids between large scale loach P. dabryanus and tetraploid pond loach M. anguillicaudatus (Cobitidae, Cypriniformes) are viable. The toxic effects of microcystin-LR on embryo-larval and juvenile development of loach, Misguruns mizolepis Gunthe

    No full text
Microcystin-LR, a specific and potent hepatotoxin, was tested for its effects oil loach embryo-larval and juvenile development, The results of this study showed that loach embryos were more sensitive when exposed to microcystin-LR at a later than at an earlier stage of development, Juveniles were far less sensitive to MC-LR than were embryos and larvae. Mortality and developmental abnormality were proven to be dose-dependent and to be stage-specific sensitive. Among the abnormal changes noted were: pericardial edema and tubular heart, bradycardia, homeostasis, poor yolk resumption. small head, curved body and tail, and abnormal hatching, Liver and heart were the main targets of microcystin-LR toxicity. Ultrastructural analysis documented a complex set of sublethal effects of microcystin-LR on loach hepatocytes, chiefly including morphological alteration in nuclear and RER of loach liver cells. fit addition, microcystin-LR was lethal to loach juvenile in the subacute (7 days) exposure (LC50) = 593.3 mug/l).
