Natural Variation of the Circadian Clock in Neurospora
Most living organisms on earth experience daily and expected changes from the rotation of the earth. For an organism, the ability to predict and prepare for incoming stresses or resources is a very important skill for survival. This cellular process of measuring daily time of the day is collectively called the circadian clock. Because of its fundamental role in survival in nature, there is a great interest in studying the natural variation of the circadian clock. However, characterizing the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation of circadian clocks remains a challenging task. In this chapter, we will summarize the progress in studying natural variation of the circadian clock in the successful eukaryotic model Neurospora, which led to discovering many design principles of the molecular mechanisms of the eukaryotic circadian clock. Despite the success of the system in revealing the molecular mechanisms of the circadian clock, Neurospora has not been utilized to extensively study natural variation. We will review the challenges that hindered the natural variation studies in Neurospora, and how they were overcome. We will also review the advantages of Neurospora for natural variation studies. Since Neurospora is the model fungal species for circadian study, it represents over 5 million species of fungi on earth. These fungi play important roles in ecosystems on earth, and as such Neurospora could serve as an important model for understanding the ecological role of natural variation in fungal circadian clocks.Advances in Genetics, Vol. 99

Sectarian Cult, Religion Family and Local Society: The Case Study of Yao Wen-yu Family of Qingyuan County, Zhejiang from Late 17th to Mid-19th Century
The rise of sectarian cults was one of the most significant religious changes that happened in local society from late seventeenth century China. This article combines archival research and field work to reestablish a Qingyuan county based cult leader, Yao Wen-yu (1578-1646) and his family history, to explore the role of his vegetarian cult in Southeastern China, especially in Zhejiang, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces from the late 17th to the mid-19th century. This article suggests that in addition to spreading their teaching, the organization built by Yao and his followers actually offered various religious services, including group classical chanting, funeral mutual aid service, and charitable drive to serve the daily life religious needs of local society. Moreover, regarding societal changes since the late Ming dynasty, this article also argues that Yao’s local cult organization should be considered a “religion family” in local society, because their teaching and organization actually had built a fictive kinship organization to go beyond the traditional kinship organization’s limits to serve the people who chose to escape from their original family. By examining this period of Yao cult family and Late Ming to Mid-Qing history, this article sheds light on the dynamic, fluid community religious life in local society
Towards the Holy Grail: combining system dynamics and discrete-event simulation in healthcare
The idea of combining discrete-event simulation and system dynamics has been a topic of debate in theoperations research community for over a decade. Many authors have considered the potential benefits ofsuch an approach from a methodological or practical standpoint. However, despite numerous examples ofmodels with both discrete and continuous parameters in the computer science and engineering literature, nobody in the OR field has yet succeeded in developing a genuinely hybrid approach which truly integratesthe philosophical approach and technical merits of both DES and SD in a single model. In this paperwe consider some of the reasons for this and describe two practical healthcare examples of combinedDES/SD models, which nevertheless fall short of the “holy grail” which has been so widely discussed inthe literature over the past decade
Validation of the Comprehensive ICF Core Set for Osteoarthritis (OA) in patients with knee OA: a Singaporean perspective
Objective: To evaluate content validity and construct validity of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Comprehensive Core Set for Osteoarthritis (OA) in Singapore. Methods: Patients with knee OA completed case report forms, which included the SF-36, Self-administered Comorbidity Questionnaire (SCQ), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Health professionals completed the ICF Comprehensive Core Set for OA. Content validity was evaluated using frequency and percentage of patients with a reported problem for each ICF category, while construct validity was evaluated using Spearman correlation between the ICF categories and SF-36 and the WOMAC.Results: A consecutive sample of 122 patients completed this study. In body functions, 12 categories were documented as a problem by more than 10% of the patients, of which 7, 12, and 10 categories correlated significantly with the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS), WOMAC pain, and physical function, respectively. Only s750 (Structure of lower extremity) in body structures was reported as a problem and correlated significantly with SF-36 and WOMAC. In activities and participation, 12 categories were reported as a problem by more than 10% of the patients, of which, 11, 11, and 12 correlated significantly with SF-36 PCS, WOMAC pain, and physical function, respectively. In environmental factors, 2 and 14 categories were documented as barrier and facilitator, respectively, by more than 10% of the patients, but none correlated significantly with SF-36 and WOMAC.Conclusion: The content and construct validity of the Comprehensive Core Set for OA could be supported. Some categories, especially in environmental factors, need to be studied further in different sociocultural contexts

RRS Discovery Cruise DY017, 20 Oct - 05 Nov 2014. Outer Hebrides process cruise
The continental shelf region immediately west of the UK and North of Ireland is thought to be a key region for the exchange of nutrients, carbon and water between the NW European continental shelf and the open North Atlantic Ocean yet it remains comparatively under sampled. Within the context of the NERC/DEFRA co-funded Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry programme, which aims to improve our understanding of the role of shelf seas in the global carbon cycle, this cruise undertook a regional scale survey to determine the distribution and concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon, inorganic nutrients, trace metals, and other ancillary data on the Malin and Hebridean Shelves. Of the seven planned transects, six were completed with the seventh abandoned due to poor weather but a rich dataset of key biogeochemical parameters has been collected which will enable work on the stoichiometry of dissolved nutrients and exchange with the open ocean to be undertaken
