Interactions between molecules and surfaces
Part 1The processing of semiconductor layer systems relies upon controlled plasma etching to achieve the desired device definition. The physics and chemistry of plasma etching are not completely understood, and many process parameters are still chosen empirically. In this thesis, in-situ ellipsometry, quadrupole mass spectrometry and optical emission spectrometry have been used to monitor the etching of silicon (100), germanium (100) and a heterostructure system comprising of Si (100) grown on Si1-xGex (100), where x=0.18. Information has been obtained on the etch rate, the layer thickness and the refractive index of the Si1-xGex layer using the in-situ diagnostic tools. Etching conditions were identified which gave uniform, smooth etching of the Si/Si1-xGex wafer system. The selective etching of Si over Si1-xGex was investigated, using CHF3 and SF6 to form etch inhibiting fluorocarbon polymer films. Si1-xGex was found to etch faster than Si in all of the experiments carried out. The best selectivity obtained for the etching of Si over Si1-xGex was 1:1.12.Nomarski microscopy was used to study the surface quality of the Si/Si1-xGex/Si wafers prior to etching. Surface roughness was attributed to relaxation of the Si1-xGex layer, leading to misfit dislocation defects. The presence of defects within the structure were confirmed using TEM and SEM.Semi-insulating polycrystalline silicon (SIPOS) thin films have been characterised using in-situ ellipsometry with plasma etching with CF4 as a process gas.The anisotropy of an etch is believed to be associated with the energy of ions impacting the wafer surface, and is therefore an area of particular interest. Experimental ion energy distributions (IED) have been recorded at the powered electrode. Theoretical IED were calculated using a FORTRAN program, and were in good agreement with the experimental IED.Part 2The rates of adsorption and desorption of methyl salicylate on various COLPRO wall coverings were measured. The adsorption and desorption curves have been fitted to an expression that can be derived for a simple adsorption/desorption model.</p
Redemption in the work of Francis Stuart
The idea of redemption is central to an understanding of the work
of Francis Stuart. Through an examination of its development and
expression, it is possible to demonstrate the integrity of his work and
its distinctive qualities. Such a demonstration is necessary because
Stuart's writing has been subjected to comparatively little scholarly
inquiry, although reviews of his work, especially that produced since
1949, suggest that it is impressive and important.
First, a general background to Stuart's work, a discussion of the
special problems associated with reading it, and a summary of his corpus
is provided. This indicates that the idea of redemption is important to
his earliest writing. The state of redemption is shown to be a
necessary apotheosis for Stuart's outcast heroes; it involves spiritual
suffering through which may be found a sense of reintegration and a
higher reality. This is expressed through interrelated themes such as
those of gambler, artist and ordinary man; mystic and criminal; sacred
and profane love; and spirituality and the mundane. The nature of the
redemptive experience is further elaborated by distinctive, complex
motifs, especially the hare, the ark and the woman-Christ. Their
recurrence provides an important element in the unity of Stuart's work.
Because Stuart's idea of the outcast raises important biographical
questions, an examination of the relationship between Stuart's life and
his work is made. Finally, the way in which the idea of redemption
exists in the language structures of Stuart's novels is examined, with
especial reference to his most recent work, The High Consistory. The
thesis shows that the development of the these of redemption
demonstrates the integrity of Stuart's work
An analysis of the effect of contrasting theologies of preaching on the teaching of preaching in British institutions of higher learning
This study examines the efforts of British universities
and colleges to educate students for the ministry of
preaching. It evaluates the hypothesis that a preaching
lecturer's theology significantly influences his teaching,
both in its content and methodology.
A summary and comparison of seven twentieth century
theologies of preaching serves as the foundation for this
study. The research considered each theology as presented
by either its originator or a leading exponent: Harry
Emerson Fosdick, Rudolf Bultmann, Karl Barth, Paul Tillich,
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, James Stewart, and Karl Rahner.
Surveys completed by fifty-five lecturers in preaching
provided the second primary focus of research. These
surveys both described current practices in homiletical
education and offered a means of dividina the lecturers into
subgroups for purposes of comparing their teaching. In
order to evaluate the primary hypothesis that theology
exerts great influence on the teaching of preaching, the
study compares the teaching practices of theological
subgroupings of lecturers (each grouping matched with one of
the theologians mentioned above). Likewise, it compares the
teaching of other lecturer subaroupings formed on the basis
of contrasting institutional and denominational settings.
Institutional and denominational setting does affect
the teaching of preaching, but, as hypothesized, not to the
degree theology does. The manner in which a lecturer's
theology determines his teaching is most noticeable in
relation to three questions relating to teaching content:
(1) From what source(s) should preachers seek preaching
content? (2) On what basis should preachers select content
from their source(s)? (3) Once the content has been
determined, by what criteria should preachers prepare
material for delivery?
A comparison of contemporary preaching theologies (and
the resultant contrasts in homiletical education) bespeak
the rich breadth within the Western Christian tradition
Beauty for the Present: Mill, Arnold, Ruskin and Aesthetic Education
The present thesis examines the idea of aesthetic education of three eminent Victorians: John Stuart Mill, Matthew Arnold and John Ruskin. By focusing on the essence of what they meant with ‘the cultivation of the beautiful’ and, more importantly, the way their ideas of beauty informed their criticism of society, my study aims to contribute to our understanding of the idea of aesthetic education in the Victorian context and, further, to participate in a recent debate about the nature of beauty and aesthetic education.
Chapter One focuses on John Stuart Mill’s concept of ‘feeling’ in a series of essays. I will demonstrate how Mill’s idea of ‘aesthetic education’ was an ‘education of feelings,’ and moreover, how this idea was integrated into his literary criticism, his later critique of democratisation, his description of an ideal liberal society and even his own style of writing. Chapter Two contains a comparative study of Matthew Arnold and Friedrich Schiller. Through a rereading of Arnold, I will argue that his idea of aesthetic education is essentially Schillerian and that their resemblance consists primarily in their stress on the importance of aesthetic unity for modern life, which was becoming increasingly fragmentary and multitudinous. Chapter Three examines John Ruskin’s idea of aesthetic education and concentrates particularly on the cultivation of perception. Perception, as I shall show, was pivotal in Ruskin’s idea of aesthetic education. Just as what happened in Mill and Arnold, the emphasis on the education of seeing continued from his early writings well into his art and social criticisms. It not only differentiated him from his fellow art critics; the conviction that people should perceive with a pure heart also enabled him to link observation of artistic details with moral criticism of contemporary society and, thereby, to turn the cultivation of the beautiful into a moral-aesthetic experience
In Search of Meaning: The Modern Myth in Neil Gaiman's American Gods
The purpose of this paper is to discover how the idea of the modern national identity and the process of identity creation is explored through mythology in Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. I argue that Gaiman uses mythological tales and gods in order to illustrate the concept of national identity, as it is theorized by Stuart Hall, and through the book’s protagonist, Shadow Moon, the author examines the identity creating process and the identity crisis of modern individuals, living in a Western society. By deploying Ragnarök, the Norse mythological tale of the death of all the gods, Gaiman acknowledges the chaos of modern society. American Gods also delves into the question of modern and pre-modern societies, reflecting on both cultural structures and the effect they have on the male protagonist’s identity creating process.N.E.AnglisztikaMSc/M

Why do patients want information, if not to make decisions?
There is empirical evidence that many patients want information about treatment options even though they do not want to take a full part in decision‐making about treatment. Such evidence may have considerable ethical implications but is methodologically problematic. It is argued here that, in fact, it is not at all surprising that patients’ informational interests should be separable from (and often stronger than) their interests in decision‐making. A number of different reasons for wanting information are offered, some to do with the content of information; some with the process, others with the fact or occasion of informing. This philosophical clarification leads to some suggestions for further empirical study

Bringing together political theorists and specialists in Canadian politics, Applied Political Theory and Canadian Politics combines conceptual frameworks from political theory and empirical evidence to offer fresh perspectives on political events in contemporary Canada. Examining complex and timely subjects such as equality, social justice, democracy, citizenship, and ethnic diversity, contributors present current and archival research supplemented with insights drawn from political theory to give readers a deep and nuanced understanding of increasingly pressing issues in Canadian society. For scholars and students seeking a work of political theory that is tangible, focused, and connected to the real world of everyday politics, Applied Political Theory and Canadian Politics will be an important resource, combining philosophical insights and empirical evidence to enhance our understanding of contemporary Canadian politics. --From publisher description.book chapte
Thermal hydraulic performance analysis of a small integral pressurized water reactor core
Thesis (Nucl. E. and S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, 2003.Includes bibliographical references (p. 117-121).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.A thermal hydraulic analysis of the International Reactor Innovative and Secure (IRIS) core has been performed. Thermal margins for steady state and a selection of Loss Of Flow Accidents have been assessed using three methodologies to account for uncertainty. The thermal hydraulic analysis has shown that the IRIS is designed with adequate thermal margin for steady state operation, the locked rotor/shaft shear accident (LR/SS) and for variants of the partial loss of flow accident. To treat uncertainties, three methods were used, ranging from conservative, deterministic methods, to more realistic and computationally demanding Monte Carlo-based methods. To facilitate the computational requirements of the thermal hydraulic analysis, a script-based interface was created for VIPRE. This scripted interface (written in Matlab) supplants the existing file-based interface. This interface allows for repeated, automatic execution of the VIPRE code on a script-modifiable input data, and parses and stores output data to disk. This endows the analyst with much greater power to use VIPRE in parametric studies, or using the Monte Carlo-based uncertainty analysis methodology. The Matlab environment also provides powerful visualization capability that greatly eases the task of data analysis.by Stuart R. Blair.Nucl.E.and S.M
A colorimetric PCR method for the detection of M. leprae in skin biopsies from leprosy patients
A one-tube nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for the diagnosis of paucibacillary leprosy was developed using the repetitive RLEP sequence as a target. Detection of the PCR products was simplified by the adaptation of a colorimetric method. The test was specific for Mycobacterium leprae, and the sensitivity of the assay was 1 fg of purified genomic M. leprae DNA (less than one genome). Complete concordance was seen between the development of color and resolution on agarose gels. The results of frozen skin sections from untreated patients showed that the assay could detect 100% of multibacillary samples [bacterial index (BI) of 2 or more] and 69% and 70% of the samples with Bis of 1 and 0, respectively. The use of one-tube nested PCR in assessing the effectiveness of multidrug therapy (MDT) in leprosy also was determined. The simplified colorimetric assay was found to be sensitive, rapid and specific, and is suitable for use in routing diagnostic laboratories.Peer reviewedfinal article publishe
