Experiential learning: An exploration of the effect of Zen experience on personal transformation

This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This inquiry started by examining my own and others experience of Zen, and comparing it with Self Organised Learning. The aim was to see what effect each system had on the lives of the participants. The thesis plots how I had a tacit reliance on myself as a measuring instrument, and how this became an integrating theme running through my 'finally chosen' methods. The methodological difficulties caused by the paradox of trying to understand Zen and also be scientific converged when I realised that I had treated myself as the central measuring instrument throughout the inquiry. It was this discovery which allowed the thesis to be treated as a koan from a Zen perspective and yet to be a contribution to academic knowledge. The thesis traces how personal authenticity became the defining characteristic informing all my methodology. This inquiry asks and answers the question can research be transpersonal? Initially the research started out looking at a transpersonal issue in the form of asking those who had regular interactions with a Zen master about their experience. This learning curve was contrasted with Learning Conversations with postgraduates at the centre for the Study of Human Learning, using inner directed learning in their research projects. During the research process, several major re-orientations took place which, necessitated changing my method and my interpretation of the data. These shifts of direction were largely driven by a need to find a method of inquiry which was appropriate to uncovering the transpersonal qualities I was investigating. As the inquiry developed I widened my sources of data to include art, fiction, accounts of death and grieving, and satsang (questions and answers with a master) in order to give an in depth picture of the impact of the transpersonal on participants' lives. In treating the thesis as a koan there can be no emphasis placed on which purposes related to which outcomes. It was in the gradual abandonment of such a stance that the deeper insights and resolutions occurred. During the inquiry I eventually identified the qualities of wholeness, authenticity and openness as the defining characteristics which appeared to trigger changes in direction. Such an approach made it necessary to examine the implications for validity that approaching transpersonal issues in this way had uncovered

That person, Timo Wyffels, highly respected member of the Municipality of Roeselare, Energie en Duurzaamheid bij Stad Roeselare. Timo and his team of sustainability experts from the Klimaatswitch team gave continuous support during the preparations for the Roeselare SWAT Studio and later Roadshow. The Roadshow team would like to take this opportunity to thank Timo and his committed colleagues at the Municipality. We wish them well in their continued efforts to make Roeselare a zero-energy city, and wish them every success in taking the outcomes of the City-zen Roeselare Roadshow to the next level of realization. Special mentions must also go to the Mayor of Roeselare, Kris Declercq, whose hospitality, encouragement and enthusiasm brought the Roadshow in meaningful partnership with the city. The day to day organisation and ‘engine room’ of the SWAT Studio and the Roadshow would be powered by the tenacity, amenability and zeal of one young member of the Klimaatswitch team, Janne Ruszkowski. We thank Kris and Janne for helping to make the Roadshow an impactful success. The Huis van de Voeding (House of Food) in the city centre of Roeselare would be the home of the SWAT Studio and Roadshow during our co-creative efforts to develop a sustainable City Vision. We’d like to thank organises for the hospitality they showed to the SWAT and Roadshow team during our extended stay there. The activities and energy within the House of Food gave even greater impetus to the Roadshow team and their stakeholder partners to go to zero carbon.Climate Design and Sustainabilit

The City-zen Roadshow travels with a team of internationally recognized experts, in the field of energy planning and design to help develop a sustainable agenda for cities and their neighbourhoods. The Roadshow visited 9 cities in total over a 5-year period who sort expert guidance on how to become more sustainable and wish to move towards energy neutrality. The overall aim of the Roadshow team was to work closely with people from the hosting city, whether they be city leaders, energy planners, local architect, professionals, academics, students and citizens. In Nicosia, the Roadshow spent 8 days delivering energy and urban design fun-shops to local stakeholders in order to encourage city participation and to take ownership of the final outcomes. Outcomes that will allow the cities resources, both people and energy, to be directed effectively, by highlighting the energy challenges and potentials to be found in their neighbourhoods, and to finally present a sustainable ‘City Vision’. The following report describes the activities and outcomes of the City-zen Nicosia Roadshow that took place in Cyprus between the 8th to 15th of May 2019.The Nicosia Roadshow would not have been possible without the commitments and passion of three individuals. Phidias Pilides (Former President, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Fikri Toros (Republican Turkish Party) and Dr. Markella Menikou (Head of Architecture, University of Nicosia). Three highly influential stakeholders that came together across political and geographical boundaries to begin a process within the only divided city in Europe, to co-create a shared sustainable city vision for Nicosia. The Roadshow team would like to take this opportunity to highlight the impactful contributions of the Dutch Embassy in Cyprus. A special mention must go to Marios Touvanas (Policy Officer, Dutch Embassy). Marios’ daily efforts during the preparation period in the months leading up to the Roadshow were vital for success. Marios’ unique knowledge of Nicosia and its ongoing efforts to become sustainable gave greater reach to the project. In addition, the roles that Ambassador Nathalie Jaarsma and Mark Rutger (Deputy Head of Mission at Embassy) took were pivotal in encouraging all stakeholders to participate to connect with their wider networks. The Roadshow networking event held at the Ambassador’s Residence on the second day of the Roadshow was an outstanding effort and is sure to influence sustainability stakeholder initiatives in the future. Special thanks must go to the University of Nicosia and their Department of Architecture (ARC) for hosting TU Delft’s SWAT Studio for two weeks in February and the later Roadshow. The collaborations made between students, staff and alumni gave a strong foundation for the later Roadshow. For this we thank Dr. Markella Menikou for giving her time, commitment, knowledge and extensive network during some challenging periods during the preparations. Further we appreciate the hospitality given by Nicosia’s ‘Home for Cooperation’ for being exactly that, ‘a home’ to the Roadshow in those days within the UN buffer zone in May 2019. The venues for the Nicosia Roadshow were selected to optimise participation. They were also unique and challenging in nature being located in the UN Buffer itself. This didn’t come without many challenges. Challenges that were made extremely worthwhile and easier thanks to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) who donated rooms within their Ledra Palace HQ for the Roadshow design studios and the Go2zero serious game. Further, the final event would be extremely well hosted by director and founder Rita Severis the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR). Final thanks must go to Prof. Panikkos Poutziouris (Rector, UCLan Cyprus) for showing the team such hospitality during a field trip to the Buffer zone. Prof. Poutziouris’ extensive insight of the island history, customs and etiquette helped tremendously in the strategic planning of the Roadshow.Climate Design and Sustainabilit

The following report will describe the activities and outcomes of the Roadshow (Sustainable Island Menorca ‘Roadshow’) that took place at the Institut Menorquí d'Estudis (IME) in Mahón on the island of Menorca, between the 24th & 28th of April 2017.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Menorca Roadshow would not have been possible without the commitment, stamina, diplomacy skills, amenability and passion of one individual. That person, Jesús Cardona, architect and highly respected member of the Institut Menorquí d'Estudis (IME). Jesús’ unconditional and continuous support during the preparations for the SWAT Studio and later Roadshow were pivotal in their joint success and far reaching impact in Mahón and across the island. The Roadshow team would like to take this opportunity to thank Jesús and his wonderful colleagues at the IME. We wish them well in their continued efforts to make Menorca a zero energy island, and wish them every success in taking the outcomes of the ‘Sustainable Island Menorca’ Roadshow to the next level of realization. The Institut Menorquí d'Estudis would be the home of the SWAT Studio and Roadshow during their co-creative efforts to develop a sustainable island vision. The IME was indeed a home, a place of welcome, friendliness, fun, support, knowledge and experience. All at the Institut, and partnering group, the L'Observatori Socioambiental de Menorca (Obsam) worked relentlessly to ensure that the objectives of the Roadshow were met. In the case of Menorca they would be surpassed. A second special mention goes to David Carreras Marti (Director of Obsam) for his mainstay influence in this regard and offering his vast knowledge of the island, its inhabitants, flora and fauna. The Roadshow was simply inspired by the citizens of Menorca and now looks forward to the next Roadshow, aiming for the higher benchmark that has been set by this island and its people.Climate Design and Sustainabilit

The City-zen Roadshow travels with a team of internationally recognized experts, in the field of energy planning and design to help develop a sustainable agenda for cities and their neighbourhoods. The overall aim of the Roadshow team is to work closely with people from the hosting city, whether they be city leaders, energy planners, local architect, professionals, academics, students and citizens. The Roadshow normally spends 5 days in each hosting city (in Amersfoort they were a compressed 3 days) to deliver energy and urban design fun-shops in which all local stakeholders are welcome and encouraged to join and to take ownership of the final outcomes, outcomes that will allow the cities resources, both people and energy, to be directed effectively, by highlighting the energy challenges and potentials to be found in theirneighbourhoods, and to finally present a sustainable ‘City Vision’.The following report will describe the activities and outcomes of the City-zen Amersfoort Roadshow that took place in the Netherlands from the 16th to the 18th of October 2019.The Amersfoort Roadshow would not have been possible without the invitation, passion and commitment of Jo Pieters and Iepe Leeman, the leads of the ‘Samen op weg naar Verduurzaming Binnen de Veste’ project team. Jo and Iepe learnt of the Roadshow and invited it into their city, neighbourhood, workplaces and homes in Amersfoort Binnen de Veste. Equally, a special mention must also go to the Gemeente Amersfoort. In particularly, the working partnership of Hanneke Dekkers (Project manager duurzaamheid) and Esther Stadhouders whose organisational skills, patience and perseverance are to be commended, and are of a great asset to the city in which they serve. From the outset with SWAT Studio preparations that began in the months prior to its start in September 2019, their help was key to success and the Roadshows collaborations with the many stakeholders of Amersfoort. The Roadshow is unique in that cities are not officially signed up to the project in any way. Instead cities voluntarily contribute to the project by dedicating time, energy, knowledge, and in many financial support to help bring all the local citizen networks together. This is why the final message of appreciation goes here to Astrid Janssen, Alderman for Sustainability, Spatial Planning and the Environment at the Gemeente Amersfoort. Astrid’s continued personal and high-level support throughout the SWAT and Roadshow set the benchmark in terms of active participation, understanding and diplomacy for this and future sustainability initiatives that value stakeholder collaborations.Climate Design and Sustainabilit
