    The Appropriation of Value from Knowledge: Three Essays on Technological Discontinuities, Market Entry, and Patent Strategy

    Knowledge accumulation and protection are critical considerations of the firm. How does the capability to appropriate value from knowledge affect firm strategies in the industries? To answer this question, I develop a new theory and evidence to argue that appropriate value from knowledge is a central consideration in firms’ capabilities and decisions to deal with technological changes and intellectual property issues. In particular, I examine the relatedness of products and markets, the strategic uses of patents, and how firms can successfully adapt to concerns regarding technological changes and intellectual property leakage. Throughout my three dissertation chapters, I find evidence that the capability to appropriate value from knowledge can affect how firms behave in consistent and essential ways. These findings provide important implications for knowledge-based views of the firm and strategy-based recommendations in terms of the management of knowledge assets

    A Low-Cost Vision-Based Unmanned Aerial System for Extremely Low-Light GPS-Denied Navigation and Thermal Imaging}, abstract = {This paper presents the design and implementation details of a complete unmanned aerial system (UAS) based on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components, focusing on safety, security, search and rescue scenarios in GPS-denied environments. In particular, the aerial platform is capable of semi-autonomously navigating through extremely low-light, GPS-denied indoor environments based on onboard sensors only, including a downward-facing optical flow camera. Besides, an additional low-cost payload camera system is developed to stream both infrared video and visible light video to a ground station in real-time, for the purpose of detecting sign of life and hidden humans. The total cost of the complete system is estimated to be $1150, and the effectiveness of the system has been tested and validated in practical scenarios

    Computationally efficient visual-inertial sensor fusion for GPS-denied navigation on a small quadrotor

    Because of the complementary nature of visual and inertial sensors, the combination of both is able to provide accurate and fast six degree-of-freedom (DOF) state estimation, which is the fundamental requirement for robotic (especially unmanned aerial vehicle) navigation tasks in GPS-denied environments. This paper presents a computationally efficient visual-inertial fusion algorithm, by separating orientation fusion from the position fusion process. It is designed to perform 6 DOF state estimation, based on a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a monocular visual-based simultaneous localization and mapping (mSLAM) algorithm measurement. It also recovers the visual scale for the mSLAM. In particular, the fusion algorithm treats the orientation fusion and position fusion as two separate processes, where the orientation fusion is based on a very efficient gradient descent algorithm, and position fusion is based on a 13-state linear Kalman filter. The elimination of a magnetometer avoids the problem of magnetic distortion, which makes it a power-on-and-go system once the gyroscope and accelerometer are factory calibrated. The resulting algorithm shows a significant computation reduction over the conventional extended Kalman filter with competitive accuracy.     Effects Of Signal Level And Spectral Contrast On Vowel Formant Discrimination For Normal-Hearing And Hearing-Impaired Listeners

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether increasing the overall speech level or the individual spectral contrasts of vowel sounds can improve vowel formant discrimination for listeners both with and without normal hearing. Method: Thresholds of vowel formant discrimination were examined for the F2 frequencies of 3 American English vowels for listeners with and without normal hearing. Spectral contrasts of the F2 were enhanced by 3, 6, and 9 dB. Vowel stimuli were presented at 70 and 90 dB SPL. Results: The thresholds of listeners with hearing impairment were reduced significantly after spectral enhancement was implemented, especially at 90 dB SPL, whereas normal-hearing listeners did not benefit from spectral enhancement. Conclusion: These results indicate that a combination of spectral enhancement of F2 and high speech level is most beneficial to improve vowel formant discrimination for listeners with hearing impairment.Communication Sciences and Disorder
