Work Life Balance - catchword or catalyst for sustainable work?
Full text linkAbstract: The origin of the formula work-life balance (WLB) can be seen in at least three social contexts: the increasing labour market participation of women, demographic changes and corporate interests in flexible labour. WLB seems to be attractive for all stakeholders, despite the resulting tensions between corporate driven flexibility and the need for individual balancing and self-organisation. It reflects changes in the sphere of paid labour on the one hand and the increasing demand for individual time arrangements to achieve quality of life on the other hand. For the purpose of this paper WLB will be connected to policies of social sustainability, especially sustainable work.

Lebensführung revisited. Zur Aktualisierung eines Konzepts im Kontext der sozial-ökologischen Transformationsforschung
Full text linkIn den Diskussionen um eine sozial-ökologische Transformation hin zu einer sozial gerechten und ökologisch nachhaltigen Gesellschaft spielen die Konzepte der Lebensweise und der Lebensstile eine relativ prominente Rolle. Das ursprünglich auf Max Weber zurückgehende Konzept der Lebensführung hingegen kaum. Bereits bei Weber stellte die (methodische) Lebensführung eine Vermittlungsebene zwischen sozio-kulturellen und sozialstrukturellen Entwicklungen und der Lebensorganisation von Individuen dar. Dieser Vermittlungsansatz wurde inzwischen im Konzept der "alltäglichen Lebensführung" weitergeführt. Mit wenigen Ausnahmen ist das Lebensführungskonzept in der sozial-ökologischen Nachhaltigkeits- und Transformationsforschung wenig rezipiert worden. Umgekehrt spielen Nachhaltigkeitsüberlegungen in der Erforschung der alltäglichen Lebensführung keine Rolle. Ausgehend von diesen Beobachtungen geht es in dem Paper darum, das Konzept der alltäglichen Lebensführung in seinen Grundzügen und empirischen Befunden darzustellen und kritisch zu reflektieren. Dazu wird vor allem eine praxistheoretische Perspektive eingenommen. Abschließend geht es darum auszuloten, was ein praxistheoretisch-orientiertes Lebensführungskonzept für die Analyse der Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten einer sozial-ökologischen Transformation beitragen kann.
In the discussion of a social-ecological transformation the concepts of the way of life and lifestyle play a prominent role. By contrast, the concept of life conduct, which origins can be traced back to Max Weber, is comparatively sparsely used in socio-ecological transformation research. Already in the works of Weber life conduct mediated between socio-cultural as well as socio-structural developments and the organization of life of individuals. This approach was carried on within the concept of the conduct of everyday life. Socio-ecological considerations usually do not matter in the research referring on this approach. Based on these observations the paper presents the main characteristics and empirical findings from the research on the conduct of everyday life. The approach will be critically examined from a practice theoretical perspective. Finally the analytical potential of a practice-oriented concept of the conduct of everyday life will be discussed with regard to a socio-ecological transformation
