Progress of Negro Education In Grimes County, Texas

    No full text
This outline is intended to give a brief idea of the progress of Negro education in Grimes County from 1887 to 1957. The author of this study has identified with Negro Public Schools of Grimes County for a period of more than fifty years, and have worked steadily and earnestly as a Negro educator in various schools of Grimes County since 1887. This interest impels him to attempt to develop this subject. For a period of twenty years from 1887 to 1907, the progress in Negro education in Grimes County had an upward trend, although the progress has been very slow. The principal agency by and through which education was sought was the public school. Prom 1908 to the present time, progress in a larger way has been made, and in this outline the writer shall try to develop these facts

Climate Change and the Environment:The Educational Imperative

    No full text
In this chapter, the author presents a summary of the case for including the study of climate and environmental justice as an integral part of the law school curriculum and, in addition, perhaps within the wider portfolio of faculty and institutional offerings. The traditional law curricula routinely approach legal education as a set of subjects, largely independent of each other, and often seemingly devoid of ethics, emotions and social justice concerns. The moral, academic and practical justifications for addressing climate and environmental matters will be spelt out along with suggestions as to how this may be achieved within existing curricula structures and through additional developments. Climate and environmental justice will be shown to fit well with many core study areas, as well as being discrete topics worthy of study in their own right. This chapter also outlines the rest of the book’s content.</p

Emergency Preparedness at Newport Hospital Emily A. Ganjei Sponsors: Carolyn Hames and Lisa Lima-Tessier, Nursing The subject of my project is emergency nursing and emergency preparedness in the Emergency Department (ED) of Newport Hospital. I am working alongside Lisa Lima-Tessier, Clinical Nurse Manager of the ED, and Pat Grimes, Assistant Clinical Nurse Manager/Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. As an undergraduate in the College of Nursing, the topic of emergency preparedness has been discussed in many courses, in particular community health nursing. In community nursing we discussed different types of disaster situations and reviewed hospital policies regarding triage and the nurse’s role in emergency situations. Each year I complete Care Learning videos that focus on disaster preparedness and unique hospital policies in Rhode Island. Specifically, I have completed orientation training twice at Newport Hospital, where my project takes place. Policy revision is an aspect of nursing that I have always been interested in because it reflects an agency’s growth and adaptation. The objective of this project is to assess, investigate, evaluate, and develop emergency preparedness competencies for Newport Hospital that comply with the Joint Commission’s accreditation and hospital policies for emergency department employees. In particular, I am working to develop competency presentations and organize the incident command center role binders/policies. The ultimate goal of the ED is the eventual development of a second incident command center. Keywords: Emergency preparedness, employee competencies, active shooter drills, incident command cente

William Grimes' Salable Book and Redeemed Self: Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave and Uncanonical Slave Narrative

    No full text
Famous slave narratives of the 1830s and 1840s, which were edited, outlined, and advertised by abolitionists, typify romantic and nationalistic ideals as if they were epitomized in the runaway slave as symbol of black humanity triumphant over corrupt institutions. However, a few slave narratives, not only written by but also published by their authors without the abolitionist aids, provide us with an important aspect of the slave narrative genre beyond it canons. This essay analyzes William Grimess Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave (1825, 1855), which was designed explicitly to raise money for its author, who had become penniless as a result of a series of legal fights for his freedom and civil rights. Grimess narrative exemplifies self-published slave narratives in the U.S. that do not subscribe the abolitionist framing of what the slave narrative should be, but establish African American authorship by redeeming the materialized blackness in the print market
