A child of the Academy? : investigating Euclid's philosophical background

No full text
A prevalent idea among contemporary scholars is that Euclid belonged to, or was heavily influenced by the Platonic philosophical tradition. To a certain extent, this impression is not new; the quest for Euclid's philosophical background was probably triggered and enhanced by his late commentators, Greeks and Arabs, who appear confident that he had one. For instance, al-Qifti writes: 'Euclid...called the author of geometry, a philosopher of somewhat ancient date...' and al-Nadim in the Fihrist names Euclid as '...one of the mathematical philosophers...' Proclus, five centuries earlier than al-Nadim, was more specific: '[Euclid] was a follower of Plato by choice, and familiar with this philosophy'. In this paper, I propose to explore the extant accounts on Euclid's philosophical background. (Michalis Sialaros, University of London

Assessment of Athens's metro passenger behaviour via a multiranked probit model

No full text
We deal with real data from a stated preference experiment which was designed to explain and predict passengers' behaviour towards three main means of transportation in the city of Athens. The resulting model formulations give rise to the so-called multiranked probit model which emerges from a series of ranking responses in a set of hypothetical scenarios, i.e. we enhance the multinomial probit model with the embodiment of a utility threshold parameter which deals realistically with ranking responses, intransitivity of indifference between alternatives or ties. Moreover, we ensure identifiable parameters for the covariance matrix of the underlying utility vectors, we include a hierarchical step that models the unit-specific utility thresholds as exchangeably distributed and, finally, we permit the use of heavy-tailed distributions for the stochastic error term. Our proposed methodology is Bayesian and the implementation tool adopted is Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. The posterior output consists of practical information such as travel characteristics (e.g. walking times and waiting times), expressed either in drachmas per hour or in minutes of in-vehicle time, and 95% credible intervals of the probability of choosing a particular mode of transportation. These are key factors in determining whether a policy has positive or negative net benefits. Copyright 2003 Royal Statistical Society.

This article presents the design and evaluation of a series of activities for Primary School education, developed under the STEAM framework and integrated into the context of Skills Workshops, with the goal of enhancing educators' attitudes towards Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). These activities target different grade levels while sharing common characteristics in content, structure, and methodology. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) scale was employed as a measurement tool for ICT attitudes. Confirmatory Factor Analysis identified five scale factors using a sample of 201 individuals. These factors were tested with non parametric tests, through a sample of 21 participants who responded to the scale before and after engaging in the activities. Wilcoxon tests revealed statistically significant improvement in attitudes for the experimental group. Furthermore, research findings indicate challenges in implementing Skills Workshops, underscoring the necessity for developing activities, resources, and training initiatives capable of stimulating educators' interest and, by extension, enhancing their attitudes towards ICT

Usefulness of the discrete choice methodology for marketing decision-making in new product development: an example from the European functional foods market

No full text
Understanding consumer needs should be a high-priority strategic objective in new product development (NPD). Despite their importance, however, NPD processes do not take full advantage of the consumer survey methodologies available. The authors investigate+ parents” preferences for three new functional children's snacks marketed in Greece. Using a very simple discrete choice experimental design, the authors aim (a) to provide an example of consumer research implementation in food-related NPD and to assess its marketing value, and (b) to evaluate the quality of the acquired consumer-related information for marketing decision-making in food consumer-led NPD processes against a number of criteria set in the relevant literature. “Functionality” is found to be a statistically significant attribute for all three children's snacks of the research design compared to other attributes such as flavor and price. Parents seem to perceive the functional snack alternative as offering greater utility as compared to its conventional (i.e., nonfunctional) counterpart. Overall, the authors conclude that, despite some inherent weaknesses, the advantage of the discrete choice methodology in connection with consumer-led food NPD lies in its ability to describe current consumer needs and desires realistically and to contribute to the optimization of existing products. [EconLit Classification: M310, C920, C930, D100]. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
