Designing visuo-haptic illusions for Virtual Reality applications using floor-based shape-changing displays
pH-Triggered Molecular Switch Toward Texture-Regulated Zn Anode.
Zn electrodes in aqueous media exhibit an unstable Zn/electrolyte interface due to severe parasitic reactions and dendrite formation. Here, a dynamic Zn interface modulation based on the molecular switch strategy is reported by hiring γ-butyrolactone (GBL) in ZnCl2/H2O electrolyte. During Zn plating, the increased interfacial alkalinity triggers molecular switch from GBL to γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). GHB strongly anchors on Zn surface via triple Zn-O bonding, leading to suppressive hydrogen evolution and texture-regulated Zn morphology. Upon Zn stripping, the fluctuant pH turns the molecular switch reaction off through the cyclization of GHB to GBL. This dynamic molecular switch strategy enables high Zn reversibility with Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% and Zn||iodine batteries with high-cyclability under high Zn depth of discharge (50%). Java based interactive tools for antenna beamforming simulation
This report summarizes the knowledge and experience gained by the author throughout the final year project, and serves a guideline of students who will embark on similar projects involving Java tool development, based on theory of radar and antenna.Under the guidance of Prof. Lu Yilong, the author undertook the design & development of two interactive Java (Applet embedded in HTML tags) tools. The first tool is for is for visualization of pattern of N-element uniform linear dipole antenna array, in three 2D-cutoff planes, by varying 10 parameters, such as the element orientation, array orientation, and dipole length. The second one is for Radar Equation calculation, along with diagram of the radar detection range with respect to one out of three important parameters (Peak Power, Antenna Gain and Signal to Noise Ratio). During the one-year dedicated commitment of the project, the theoretical knowledge of radar system and antenna radiation theory is acquired, as well as the expertise of Model-View-Control (MVC) design pattern and the experience of rich client (Applet) programming in Java.Bachelor of Engineerin

A three-dimensional water quality modeling approach for exploring the eutrophication responses to load reduction scenarios in Lake Yilong (China)
Lake Yilong in Southwestern China has been under serious eutrophication threat during the past decades; however, the lake water remained clear until sudden sharp increase in Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and turbidity in 2009 without apparent change in external loading levels. To investigate the causes as well as examining the underlying mechanism, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed, simulating the flow circulation, pollutant fate and transport, and the interactions between nutrients, phytoplankton and macrophytes. The calibrated and validated model was used to conduct three sets of scenarios for understanding the water quality responses to various load reduction intensities and ecological restoration measures. The results showed that (a) even if the nutrient loads is reduced by as much as 77%, the Chl a concentration decreased only by 50%; and (b) aquatic vegetation has strong interaction with phytoplankton, therefore requiring combined watershed and in-lake management for lake restoration. Discovery and Characterization of ZTF J0112+5827: an 80.9-Minute Polar with Strong Cyclotron Features
This dataset includes spectral data associated with the research "Discovery and Characterization of ZTF J0112+5827: an 80.9-Minute Polar with Strong Cyclotron Features." It contains images of spectra obtained from different telescopes, each supplemented with phase information to support detailed analysis. - Emission_line.png: Phase-resolved spectroscopy of ZTF J0112+5827, captured with low-resolution spectra from the P200, illustrates the evolution of the Balmer emission lines over the orbital period. - spectraP200.png: The time-resolved spectra of ZTF J0112+5827 obtained with P200/DBSP displays 30 partial spectra over one cycle. Enhancing elastocaloric cooling performance of NiTi-based shape memory alloys by thermomechanical processing
The elastocaloric cooling performance of NiTi-based shape memory alloys is enhanced by grain refinement (and partial amorphization), dislocation strengthening and alloying (combined with multiaxial forging and aging). Firstly, the effects of grain refinement and partial amorphization on temperature drop (ΔT), coefficient of performance (COP)and cyclic stability of NiTi are investigated. It is found that grain refinement and partial amorphization decrease ΔT by reducing the amount of B2 phase, increase COP by altering phase transition mode and enhance cyclic stability by grain boundary and amorphous phase strengthening. A good combination of large ΔT, enhanced cyclic stability and high COP is achieved in a 35 nm-grain-size NiTi. Secondly, to further enhance cyclic stability, nanocrystalline high-density-dislocation (HDD) NiTi is fabricated via cold rolling and annealing. The HDD NiTi exhibits large and stable elastocaloric effect with a ΔT of 16-18 ℃ and a residual strain of only 1.25% over 106 cycles under 1400 MPa. The nano-grains and the high-density dislocations suppress new dislocations and residual martensite, leading to the stable elastocaloric effect. Thirdly, to largely reduce transition stress, Cu and Co are added in NiTi to obtain quaternary NiTiCuCo. Precipitated NiTiCuCo is further successfully fabricated via multiaxial forging followed by aging. With a low transition stress of around 400 MPa at room temperature, the precipitated NiTiCuCo under the working stress of 550 MPa shows a large and stable ΔT of about 17 ℃, low residual strain of 0.19% and high COP of over 40 in 107 cyclic compressions. The excellent cyclic stability, on one hand, originates from the reduced sweep distance of the transformation interfaces due to introduction of dense precipitates, and on the other hand, from precipitation strengthening.</p
Discovery and characterization of ZTF J0112+5827: An 80.9-minute polar with strong cyclotron features
Context. A new X-ray Cataclysmic variable (CV) candidate exhibits distinct light-curve characteristics in the ZTF’s g, r, and i bands. The paper includes the optical identification and multiwavelength analysis of this CV candidate.
Aims. This work aims to determine if a previously identified CV candidate, ZTF J0112+5827, is a polar system by examining its X-ray and cyclotron radiation characteristics.
Methods. We characterized the X-ray emission of ZTF J0112+5827 using the ROSAT observations. The gri-band optical light curves were obtained from the Zwicky Transient Facility. After two nights of time-domain spectroscopic observations with the Palomar 200-inch telescope, we mapped the accretion structures using Doppler tomography.
Results. ZTF J0112+5827 exhibits an orbital period of 80.9 minutes, determined from the ZTF light curves, and an average X-ray flux of (68.4 ± 15.7)×10−14 erg s−1 cm−2 in the 0.1–2.4 keV range. It shows an ellipsoidal-like variability curve in the g band, with two prominent humps around phases of ∼0.0 and ∼0.7 in the i and r bands. In the spectra corresponding to these phases, a redward-increasing power-law continuum appears, which is accompanied by prominent features of cyclotron emission humps. Emission lines of He II and Balmer series were observed. The magnetic field strength of ZTF J0112+5827 was determined from the cyclotron harmonics. Its tomography map revealed the presence of accretion streams, but there was no evidence of an accretion disk structure. The line-of-sight velocity of the Balmer emission was measured at about 500 km s−1, the majority of which was contributed by accretion streams and accretion spots. Novel Doping Free Metal-oxide Carrier Selective Passivating Contacts for Solar Cells
Carrier selective passivating contact (CSC) is considered to be a promising direction for surface passivation research because it performs passivation for both non-contacted and contacted areas. Conventional heavy doping CSCs are subject to a few drawbacks such as significant Auger recombination, parasitic absorption, complicated processing and relatively high fabrication cost. An alternative approach is by using transition metal oxides (TMO) where nm-thick metal oxides are introduced with easy and cost effective processes to realize the asymmetric conductivity for charge carriers. In this project, we investigated the passivation property and carrier selectivity of two types of TMOs, namely MoOx as hole transport layer (HTL) and TiOx as electron transport layer (ETL).The performance of MoOx based HTL is characterized at device level. By optimizing the metallization process, interfacial (i)a-Si:H layer thickness, textured surface pre-treatment and annealing conditions, an ultimate PCE of 17.60% is achieved, with Voc being 655 mV, Jsc being 38.36 mA/cm2 and FF being 70.40%.The passivation quality of TiOx based ETL is characterized both by symmetric test for the passivation properties and at device level. First, the passivation property of single TiOx layer and NAOS-SiO2/TiOx stacks are investigated. With the optimization of layer thickness and FGA conditions, a Voc of ~680 mV is obtained in both cases. After which, we investigated the passivation degradation caused by changing a new TiO2 source material. We conclude that the passivation degradation is mainly attributed to the non-uniform TiOx coating resulted from the reduced free mean path of evaporated TiOx due to TiO2 outgassing during deposition. Meanwhile, we also studied the influence of different interfacial layer between c-Si and TiOx such as (i)a-Si:H thin layer where a Voc of ~660mV is achieved by using new TiO2 source. Eventually, all optimized ETL structures are tested in FBC solar cells with p+ poly-SiOx at the front side as HTL. The results demonstrate that all cells are showing similar passivation quality (Voc=~575 mV) and the champion cell of 14.21% efficiency is achieved in c- Si/TiOx stack, with Jsc being 30.53 mA/cm2 and FF being 74.97%.<br/
