In Conversation with Jonah Conversation Analysis, Literary Criticism and the Book of Jonah

No full text
The author analyses the various conversations that occur between the characters in the Jonah narrative and the 'conversation' that occurs between the text and its readers. The study opens with an introduction to the field of conversation analysis, with a focus on one feature of conversation analysis-that a fundamental structure in the organization of language is adjacency pairs (for example, question/answer and invitation/refusal). Person notes how complex the adjacency pairs in the Jonah narrative are, and shows how they contribute to the narrative elements of plot, characterization, atmosphere and tone. He then refines reader-response theory (especially that of Wolfgang Iser) and provides a reader-response commentary on the book. The study ends with an analysis of the history of the interpretation of the book of Jonah, demonstrating how the structures of adjacency pairs in the narrative have been successfully and unsuccessfully interpreted.Intro -- Contents -- Preface -- Abbreviations -- Introduction -- Chapter 1 CONVERSATION ANALYSIS AND NARRATIVE -- 1. Notes on the Determiner Ge and Related Problems

No full text
[[abstract]]This work presents some reflections on the determiner ge ‘each, numerous’ in Mandarin Chinese, focusing on its quantificational properties and related questions. T.-H. Lin (1998, 2004) examines the syntactic and semantic properties of ge; also see Kung 1993 and Soh 1998). But these works only discuss the adverbial use of ge, not its determiner use.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2005_v1_p267[[department]]語言學研究

The topology and electrical properties of nanoparticle networks

No full text
Includes bibliographical references. The bulk and surface network topologies of milled silicon nanoparticle aggregates in layers deposited on porous and non-porous substrates have been quantitatively characterised using laboratory and synchrotron based small angle X-ray scattering and ultra-small angle X-ray scattering, as well as with a new surface scattering technique developed for this research, which can be described as wide angle low q scattering. A new scaling model applied to the small angle and ultra-small angle X-ray scattering data which was originally developed to describe branched polymers was shown to be applicable to the description of the networks of silicon particles. The milled particles which have a highly polydisperse size distribution, form agglomerates, which in turn cluster to form larger structures with a very high degree of aggregation. Results from the new scattering technique showed the rough surface of the printed layers to have a fractal structure with step heights of 10% to 20% between adjacent particles. This value is consistent with the topology of the particle aggregates in the layer inferred from ultra-small angle X-ray scattering. Flow properties of the inks on different substrates lead to quantitative differences in the mean aggregate separation, with slowly curing systems on materials which allow good capillary flow resulting in denser networks with smaller aggregates and better contact between particles. The electrical conductance of the layers was shown to be linearly related to parallel connections of the minimum paths of particles through the aggregates as determined from the analysis of ultra-small angle X-ray scattering data. The capacitance of the layers was shown to have a linear dependence on both the separation between primary particles and series connection of the minimum paths

Is there TP in Mandarin Chinese?

No full text
[[abstract]]This paper shows that Lin’s (2003, 2006) argument that Mandarin Chinese has not TP is fallacious in logic, and hence is invalid. It is pointed out that some of his analyses are based on semantic rules and principles and also hold in languages like English. As a result, if MC doesn’t have TP simply because those rules and principles may help to derive the temporal interpretations of MC sentences without recourse to the function of T, English shouldn't have TP as well, since those rules and principles apply to English too. Thus Lin’s (2003, 200) analyses are based on a wrong assumption: T in English determines the temporal interpretation of sentences. The contrary is more correct; that is, the choice of tense in English is determined by those semantic rules and principle.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2007_v3_p35[[department]]語言學研究

Structures and Functional Categories of Mandarin Sentences

No full text
[[abstract]]This paper examines the functional categories in Mandarin sentences. It argues that the “backbone” of Mandarin sentences consists of a series of light verbs and mood heads. It also discusses the status and structural properties of the sentence-final particle le, showing that le denotes perfect aspect and is a predicate-level aspectual element. Other aspectual elements in Mandarin sentences are also examined.[[fileno]]204_JA07_2010_v6_p41[[department]]語言學研究

Jonah: The reconstruction of a character The purpose of this article is twofold: (i) first to present a useful model of characterization postulated by De Beus, expanded by Brink, and, on narratological grounds, corrected by the present author; (ii) this model is accordingly applied to reconstruct the character of Jonah in the Septuagint version of this Biblical narrative

Multiple-modal constructions in Mandarin Chinese and their finiteness properties

No full text
This work examines multiple-modal constructions in Mandarin Chinese. It is shown that modals in Mandarin Chinese are ordered in specific ways, and, while a number of factors contribute to the determination of the hierarchical order of modals, the finiteness of the complement clauses that the modals take plays a particularly important role. A generalization proposed in this paper is that (i) if a modal takes a finite clause as complement, then the modal itself can only occur in a finite context; and (ii) if a modal takes a nonfinite clause as complement, then it can occur in a nonfinite context too. This generalization is shown to account for some ordering phenomena of modals in Mandarin Chinese that would otherwise remain mysterious.</jats:p

Significant geographical differences in prevalence of mutations associated with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax drug resistance in two regions from Papua New Guinea

No full text
Drug resistance remains a major obstacle to malaria treatment and control. It can arise and spread rapidly, and vary substantially even at sub-national level. National malaria programmes require cost-effective and timely ways of characterizing drug-resistance at multiple sites within their countries.; An improved multiplexed post-PCR ligase detection reaction-fluorescent microsphere assay (LDR-FMA) was used to simultaneously determine the presence of mutations in chloroquine resistance transporter (crt), multidrug resistance 1 (mdr1), dihydrofolate reductase (dhfr) and dihydropteroate synthase (dhps) genes in Plasmodium falciparum (n = 727) and Plasmodium vivax (n = 574) isolates collected in 2006 from cross-sectional community population surveys in two geographically distinct regions (Madang and East Sepik) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) where strong regional differences in in vivo aminoquinoline and antifolate therapeutic efficacy had previously been observed. Data were compared to those of a follow-up survey conducted in 2010.; Despite some very low parasite densities, the assay successfully amplified all P. falciparum and P. vivax loci in 77 and 69 % of samples, respectively. In 2006, prevalences of pfdhfr (59R-108 N) double mutation/wild type pfdhps haplotype, pfcrt SVMNT haplotype (72S-76T double mutation), and 86Y pfmdr1 mutation all exceeded 90 %. For P. vivax, 65 % carried at least two pvdhfr mutations, 97 % the 647P pvdhps mutation and 54 % the 976F pvmdr1 mutation. Prevalence of mutant haplotypes was higher in Madang than East Sepik for pfcrt SVMNT (97.4 vs 83.3 %, p = 0.001), pfdhfr (59R-108 N) (100 vs 90.6 %, p = 0.001), pvdhfr haplotypes (75.8 vs 47.6 %, p = 0.001) and pvmdr1 976F (71.2 vs 26.2 %, p < 0.001). Data from a subsequent Madang survey in 2010 showed that the prevalence of pfdhps mutations increased significantly from <5 % to >30 % (p < 0.001) as did the prevalence of pvdhfr mutant haplotypes (from 75.8 to 97.4 %, p = 0.012).; This LDR-FMA multiplex platform shows feasibility for low-cost, high-throughput, rapid characterization of a broad range of drug-resistance markers in low parasitaemia infections. Significant geographical differences in mutation prevalence correlate with previous genotyping surveys and in vivo trials and may reflect variable drug pressure and differences in health-care access in these two PNG populations

Cataloochee tract 284: Jonah Phillips

No full text
This 64-acre tract 284 in the Mount Sterling section of Cataloochee was owned by Jonah Phillips. While, in general, the Great Smoky Mountains region was sparsely populated, the Cataloochee Valley remained an exception. By 1900, the population of Cataloochee had grown to 1,000 residents living in hundreds of log and frame homes. A few historic buildings have been preserved on site, including two churches, a school, several homes, and outbuildings. The North Carolina Park Commission was tasked with purchasing land for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and people living in Cataloochee were among those displaced. Cataloochee families continue to return for annual reunions. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced elk into the valley.87 ··- ., .• 'l J·' "'.
