A study of teaching automation for marine engineers
This dissertation is a research into a study of teaching automation for marine engineers which is conducted at the Institute of Marine Technology (IMT)of the Union of Myanmar as related to the Fundamentals of Automation, Instrumentation and Control systems, module 9 of IMO model course 7.02. This course is now included in the mandatory part of STCW Code A of the revised STCW Convention. An examination is made of the fundamentals of ship automation and a brief overview is given of the modem developments in ship automation system. This includes modem developments in main engine automation, navigation/ bridge control, integrated control ship, condition monitoring systems and programmable controller. The author has attempted to analyse the present syllabus on Automation, Instrumentation and Control Systems ( AICS ) course conducted at IMT and related subjects conducted in recent education and training schemes for marine engineers in Myanmar. Comparisons of the IMO model course and IMT’s AICS course are presented emphasising entry standards, subject outline and detailed teaching syllabus. Then the author proposes ways and means to improve the course to meet the requirements of the IMO model course. The author also suggests the promotion of some related subjects to support the AICS course by using teaching aids and some courses which are recently available in IMT. The modem developments in ship automation are very rapid and dramatic. In this regard, a brief syllabus for the near future is also proposed to cope with modem developments. A number of recommendations are also made to harmonise with the course to be promoted

Sensitivity Analysis of Heavy Rainfall Events on Physical Parameterization Configurations Using WRF-ARW Model over Myanmar
As Myanmar is situated at the center of Southeast Asia’s southwest monsoon area, it has been severely affected by heavy rainfall events every year. The aim of this research is to investigate the impacts of physical parameterization configurations of the WRF-ARW model, including two convective parameterization schemes (Kain-Fritsch scheme (KF) and Betts-Miller-Janjic scheme (BMJ)), six microphysics schemes (Kessler (K), Purdue Lin et al. (Lin), WRF Single-Moment 3-class (WSM3), WRF Single-Moment 6-class (WSM6), New Thompson et al. (Thompson) and Morrison double-moment scheme (Morrison)), and the Yonsei University planetary boundary layer scheme, on three heavy rainfall events in the recent years (on 14–17 April 2017, on 22 October 2018, and on 20 July 2019) over Myanmar.
Comparisons between the daily observed rainfall data from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH), Myanmar, and twelve different model simulated rainfall outputs were made to assess the quantitative verification of the WRF-ARW model in simulating rainfall. The National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final Analysis (NCEP-FNL) dataset was used as the initial and boundary conditions. Based on the model simulated results, it was proved that the model detected the different environmental factors that caused heavy rainfall over Myanmar. For the heavy rainfall case in 2017, which was caused by the impact of the tropical pre-monsoon cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, the best simulated cyclone track was obtained in the combination of the KF-Morrison schemes, compared with simulated outputs and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) dataset. The combination that best captured the sea level pressure and wind speed was the BMJWSM3 schemes.
It was found that the BMJ-WSM3 combination was the best at simulating rainfall for the normal daily rainfall event, although the BMJ-Morrison experiment was the best to capture the rainfall during heavy rainfall event caused by the impact of tropical premonsoon cyclone in Myanmar. The BMJ convective parameterization scheme was the best to simulate the heavy rainfall event during the southwest monsoon period, whereas the KF scheme showed the best results for the heavy rainfall event affected by a tropical cyclone of South China Sea. In terms of the microphysics schemes, the WSM6 and Morrison schemes simulated rainfall relatively well during heavy rainfall events over Myanmar. The Morrison scheme was able to simulate rainfall better than the WSM6 microphysics scheme during the heavy rainfall event caused by the impact of the tropical cyclone, and the WSM6 scheme simulated rainfall more efficiently in the heavy rainfall event due to the vigorous southwest monsoon over Myanmar. Overall, for the three heavy rainfall cases over Myanmar, the BMJ-WSM6 combination was the best in simulating the rainfall aspects.

EPR and solid-state NMR studies on the mechanism of cytochrome bo3 ubiquinol oxidase from escherichia coli
Cytochrome bo3 ubiquinol oxidase from E. coli is a member of heme-copper oxidase superfamily. This trans-membrane enzyme complex catalyzes two-electron oxidation of ubiquinol and reduction of molecular oxygen to water. During the process, the protons from ubiquinol are released to the periplasmic side of the membrane, whereas the protons used in the reduction of O2 are taken from the cytoplasmic side. In addition to the protons involved in the redox reaction, the enzyme also translocates four protons from the cytoplasmic side to the periplasmic side for each molecule of oxygen reduced. Thus, cytochrome bo3 contributes to the electrochemical potential difference across the membrane. During turnover, electrons from the ubiquinol pool are first transferred to a ubiquinone cofactor bound at the high affinity binding site known as the QH-site, from which electrons are moved one at a time sequentially to the low-spin heme b and the CuB-heme o3 catalytic site. In this study, E. coli C43(DE3) auxotroph strains were constructed with highly efficient λ-Red recombination system. Wild-type and D75H mutant cytochrome bo3 samples with selectively isotope labeled Arg, Gln or His were prepared from these C43(DE3) auxotroph strains, and the semiquinone radicals at the QH-site of these samples were analyzed by pulsed EPR spectroscopy. Selective 15N labeling has revealed the Nε of R71 in the wild type cytochrome bo3 and the Nε of H75 in the D75H mutant cytochrome bo3 as the nitrogen atoms that are strongly coupled with the carbonyl oxygen-1 of the semiquinone and produce 14N ESEEM features observed in previous studies. Pulsed EPR experiments performed on these selectively 15N labeled samples also enabled the investigation of nitrogen nuclei weakly coupled to the semiquinone. In addition, three amino-acid pair-wise isotope labeled cytochrome bo3 samples were prepared from C43(DE3) auxotrophs for solid-state NMR (SSNMR) experiments. The initial SSNMR spectra proved that clean isotope labeling at the selected amino acid types was achieved through the use of auxotroph strains. This selective labeling approach dramatically simplifies the SSNMR signals and presents a great possibility to accomplish the chemical shift assignments of critical residues at the active site of such a large membrane protein complex. Furthermore, several cytochrome bo3 samples with selectively isotope labeled ubiquinone cofactors were successfully assembled. The procedure described in this study establishes a major step towards structural and mechanistic studies on the ubiquinone binding site of cytochrome bo3 by EPR and SSNMR techniques.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2010-04-09T19:16:03Z

Heritage in the Myanmar Frontier: Shan State, Haws, and Conditions for Public Participation
Lack of public participation and engagement in the decision-making process hinders heritage conservation in Myanmar, in particular for the ethnic minorities who have been marginalized in the conservation practice. This thesis builds on the assumption that establishing participatory processes and decision-making mechanisms for heritage conservation in Myanmar can improve heritage representation in Myanmar. It will also serve the preservation of ethnic minority heritage better. As a multiethnic country with various historical narratives and interests, Myanmar faces challenges in representing the diverse heritages it possesses. Concerned with built heritage, this thesis seeks to improve heritage practice in Myanmar to include sites that are oriented towards the diverse history of the Union. It looks forward to broadening the conversation of public participation in Myanmars heritage sector.
This thesis assesses the current conditions for public participation in Myanmar, providing an overview of heritage sites in Shan State and a more in-depth investigation of a case study site in Yawnghwe. In this research, history and identity are explored to understand the historical narrative and heritage of the ethnic minority in relations to the Union. Existing heritage conservation laws are analyzed and critiqued to suggest improvement for the conditions of the heritage sites. The conditions for public participation are examined through the use of the case study and community interviews to inform how heritage sites chosen are understood, and how they are conserved. The case study in Yawnghwe helps to explore policy improvement in heritage conservation, framing the opportunities and challenges that exist in heritage conservation practice in Myanmar
