Helen Bonny as Teacher, Mentor and Supervisor
Six individuals who trained with Helen Bonny over the years were asked to reflect on their perceptions of her as as a teacher, a mentor and a supervisor. The experience of these individuals spans the time period of Helen\u27s training, from her first training sessions to her retirement from training. At the Bonny Foundation, they took a three level training; Helen Lindquist Bonny was Director of the Bonny Foundation; Lisa Summer was Director of the GIM Training; Frances Goldberg was Primary Trainer. We asked each person to address several topics specifically, with some general reflections and memories which the author synthesized into an overview. What has emerged from the memories of the seven people contributing to this reflection is a picture of a multifaceted person and her style of teaching, including three outstanding characteristics of Helen. Their valuable insights were in relation to Helen in three roles: teacher in the training seminars, individual supervisor and individual mentor
Bonny Cassidy, Folio of poetry 2016
BACKGROUND - This folio updates my ongoing creative writing practice, with nine poem publications. The poems represent my current interest in twisted or unmoored lyric, in which the speaking voice adopts riddling or changing identities. Influences on this work include contemporary work by local and international poets Michael Farrell, Fiona Hile and Gig Ryan, Lucie Brock-Broido, Tomas Transtromer and Anne Carson. CONTRIBUTION - This poetic mode is a response to feminist poetics, specifically the question of the poetic speaker's identity and its relationship to traditions with gendered associations, such as confessionalism and activist poetry. These poems ask, who is speaking and do they have any relationship to the author apart from the imaginary; does poetry require emotional authenticity? Drawing these questions into my own context as a postcolonial settler writer, these works also ask how analogy, fable, riddle and drama might represent a particularly Australian female voice and experience. SIGNIFICANCE - This folio places my current work within a number of different contexts, national and international. Plumwood Mountain addresses the intersection of ecology and poetry, thus extending the critical framing of my contribution, which was selected by guest editors Peter Minter and Stuart Cooke. Island is a well-established print journal based in Tasmania, its poetry edited by Sarah Holland-Batt, and reaching a national audience of subscribers and wide retail distribution. Poetry (US) is America's foremost poetry journal, and this work will feature in a special issue of Australian work, edited by Robert Adamson. Finally, four of my poems will feature in Active Aesthetics, edited by Lyn Hejinian and published out of the University of California, Berkeley. This collection is published to accompany a symposium of the same name, to be held in April, and made available to a wide range of scholars, students and writers of poetry in America and Australia
Pivotal moments and changes in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music for patients with depression
AIMS: To explore pivotal moments and changes during the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music from the perspective of patients with depression. BACKGROUND: Depression has been described as an extremely difficult experience for people and is characterised by emotional distress and suffering. As depression progresses, symptoms increase and gradually influence all aspects of the lives of those affected. Few studies have been undertaken into the essence of inner and pivotal experiences during Guided Imagery and Music in patients with depression. DESIGN: A qualitative research design and discovery-oriented approach were used as the method of both data gathering and textual analysis. METHODS: This study conducted semi-structured interviews with five patients with depression after each of eight sessions of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. Each session took place in a music therapy laboratory. Forty transcripts were organised into categories and analysed according to the discovery-oriented approach of Mahrer and Boulet, considering the dimensions of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. Results. Nine patients with depression were recruited from a medical centre in southern Taiwan from 2004-2005. Five successfully completed eight Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music sessions. There were 141 statements coded into 10 subthemes and three themes describing pivotal moments: pushing aside the barrier, gaining new insight, moving forward. Each category was supported by three-four themes. The analysis also yielded three meaningful moments: releasing mind-body rigidity, awareness and inspiration, acceptance and inner transformation. Patients described personal emotional, cognitive and behavioural transformation during the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music experiences. CONCLUSIONS: The discovery-oriented approach fulfilled the aim of gaining a valuable understanding of the psychological growth experiences of patients with depression during the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Patients with depression particularly need comfort and caring. It is important that nurses offer interventions as adjuvants to medication. This study supports the feasibility of incorporating the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music into the nursing management of patients with depression. Future studies are suggested to examine the interactive process of music stimulus and the multidimensional nature of imagery
