Linking carbonate sand fabric and mechanical anisotropy from hollow cylinder tests: Motivation and application

No full text
In addition to density and stress, fabric is also a key state variable strongly affecting soil behavior. While fabric influence on mechanical behavior of soils has been investigated experimentally, the available database is limited in terms of boundary conditions and soil types tested. Offshore carbonate sediments are of special interest for offshore geotechnical analyses due to their prevalence in tropical waters and unique mechanical behavior that stems from their mostly biogenic origin. A key gap in the availability of experimental data on soil fabric relates to the anisotropy of offshore carbonate sediments. In practice, anisotropy studies (whether rigorously correlated to fabric or not) are typically carried out experimentally for simple boundary conditions such as idealized plane strain and axisymmetric states. In real geotechnical applications, stress paths subjected to soil elements in the field are far more complex, often involving the combined variations of both the orientation and magnitude of all three principal stresses. This paper presents a new multiscale approach to assess soil fabric at the micro-scale level and relate it to the macromechanical response observed for generalized loading conditions. A new sampling method is illustrated that enables preservation and evaluation of the fabric of offshore sediments specimens following generalized stress disturbances imparted by a hollow cylinder apparatus. The link between fabric evolution and the observed stress-strain behavior of sand is discussed along with preliminary results. The approach is part of a broad framework that will be used to systematically study the evolution of soil fabric and anisotropy and their relationship to multi-directional loading scenarios.</p

Factors influencing continuance intention to use social media among malaysian manufacturing smes: the mediating effect of social media usage

No full text
Malaysian SMEs were discovered to be using social media in their businesses. This is because social media is now one of the most important marketing channels for businesses. The role of social media, on the other hand, has been inconsistent and has yet to be heavily focused on the SME Manufacturing field. Consequently, the continuance intention of the use of social media remains unknown to date. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing continuance intention to use social media among Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. In addition, the study also examines the mediating effect of social media usage on the relationship of technological, organizational, environmental context, and inter-organizational relationship (independent variables) and continuance usage intention (dependent variable). In terms of operation, this study adapted the Technological-Organizational-Environmental framework (TOE) and Diffusion of Innovation Model (DOI) to predict and understand the factors influencing continuance intention to use social media among Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. A set of data from 185 respondents from manufacturing SME’s owner, marketing manager, or marketing executive were used by analyzed with SPSS version 26 and SmartPLS 3.3.3. Bootstrapping results showed relative advantage, partner’s pressure, communication, and networking have significant relationships with social media usage. Furthermore, social media usage has a significant relationship with continuance intention. The mediation analysis results indicated that social media usage mediated the relationships between relative advantage and communication. Owners or marketing departments at manufacturing SMEs may find the study's findings useful as guidelines for adopting efficient B2B social media marketing strategies, apart from extending the body of knowledge in social media usage and continuance usage intention. Limitation of the study and future research recommendations have also been done

Using a literature review and bibliometric analysis, this research aims to analyse the relationship between the Islamic economy and sustainability. The study aimed to systematically document the intellectual structure, volume, tendencies of knowledge development, the author, and source impact. Using Microsoft Excel and R Studio, information is compiled from Scopus databases and analysed. We gathered a searchable database of the 76 most relevant papers from the last twenty-two years based on a vast amount of literature. Preliminary data suggests that between 2000 and 2022, there has been an increase in the number of works written on the Islamic economy. The bibliometric study using R identifies the subject’s most influential journals, authors, and papers. This study demonstrates that a new research topic can be derived by condensing the essential aspects of the Islamic economy and sustainability into a single concept, thereby opening up new research avenues in both the expansive field of the Islamic economy and the relatively new and hotly debated field of sustainability

Promoting sales in e-commerce live streaming: How streamer credibility, attractiveness, and time pressure drive purchase decisions

No full text
This study examines the factors influencing consumer purchase decisions within the rapidly expanding e-commerce live streaming landscape. Drawing on source credibility theory and perceived value theory, it examines the direct effects of host credibility (encompassing trust, expertise, and attractiveness) and product attractiveness on purchase decisions. Furthermore, it uniquely explores the critical moderating role of time pressure, a defining characteristic of live streaming environments. Empirical analysis confirms that both host credibility and product attractiveness significantly and positively influence viewers' purchase decision. Crucially, the study reveals that time pressure acts as a significant moderator, strengthening the positive relationships between (a) host credibility and purchase decision, and (b) product attractiveness and purchase decision. These findings challenge the assumption of purely rational decision-making in e-commerce, highlighting the potent influence of real-time urgency and product perceptions in interactive, time-constrained live streaming. The research contributes theoretically by integrating temporal pressure into the digital persuasion framework of live commerce and offers practical insights for platforms, brands, and hosts to optimize live streaming strategies. Specifically, it underscores the importance of selecting credible hosts, enhancing product visual appeal, and strategically leveraging time-limited promotions to amplify persuasive impact and drive sales conversion

Price variation across supermarkets in Singapore

No full text
What are the factors that enable some supermarkets to charge a higher price for the same product? How does this influence consumer purchasing behaviour? In this paper, price indexes are constructed using primary price data on a basket of 81 goods to provide evidences of spatial price discrimination practised by supermarket retailers. These price indexes include normal prices and final prices as well as the exclusion of house brand product prices. Our study has identified four main factors namely geographical characteristics, chain characteristics, competition and location, which contribute to the price variations. Our main findings could be summed up as follow: (1) Geographical location of the supermarket affects the pricing decisions of supermarket chains. In particular, supermarkets charge higher prices in higher income, higher population density and non-neighbourhood areas. (2) Supermarket retailers adopt different pricing strategies by targeting different segments of consumers. Furthermore, from the survey conducted, shoppers' demographics were shown to affect their purchasing behaviour. Given these findings, supermarket prices are shown to be different across districts and chains.Bachelor of Art

No full text
In Malaysia, the uncertain situations such as the politic and economic crisis, natural disaster, security issues and the current pandemic outbreak have led to instability of the business operation in many important economic sectors. Opting for digital strategy means is one of the agile business strategies that can be adopted by entrepreneurs to survive in time of crisis. Nonetheless, the digital adoption by microenterprises in Malaysia, especially in Sabah lags behind the global average in terms of the webpage, e-commerce and social media. Many scholars suggest access to internet infrastructure, funding and basic knowledge as the hindrances to digital adoption among microenterprises. It is still unknown how difficult situation such as the pandemic crises might influence the intention to adopt digital strategy among microenterprises. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the influence of institutional pressures on the adoption intention on digital strategy among microenterprises in Sabah. This study uses institutional theory to explain the drivers of digital adoption among microenterprises. A total of 133 micro-entrepreneurs from Sabah has participated in the questionnaire-based survey. This study concludes that normative pressure and attitude have a significant influence on the intention to adopt digital strategy among micro-entrepreneurs

No full text
Over the last decades, many researchers made critical literature reviews and meta-analyses related to technology/knowledge transfer and acquisition majors in different contexts. Due to the paucity of research, this study offers a critical literature review (CLR) on international joint ventures’ knowledge acquisition from foreign partners. This study aims to provide a complete analysis of 23 (out of 93) research publications published in reputable journals and conference proceedings between 1996 and 2020. This review research may be considered a vital resource for academics as it fills in some informational gaps, particularly from an international joint venture perspective. In addition, this paper has presented all previous studies by identifying the main critical factors for knowledge acquisition, namely, the determinants, outcomes, moderator, mediator, and context. The paper provides recommendations for future studies
