    A G-rich sequence within the 3'UTR of KiSS1 forms G-quadruplex

    Get PDF

CER69-70GH-JEC-WZS-13.September 1969.For Metronics Associates, Inc.Includes bibliographical references.Mean and fluctuating wind loading on a 1:192 scale model of Kaiser Center Office Building 403 ft high was studied in a uniform flow. Pressure measurements were carried out for four different wind directions (N, NE, E, and S). The wind loading was influenced strongly by a tall building immediately to the southeast when the wind was from the south, Generally, the mean pressure was higher at the center portion of an upwind face than near its edges. On the leewind surface relatively uniform negative pressure (suction) was obtained. Its absolute value was about one-third of that along an upwind face. On the other hand, the fluctuating pressure was highest near the building base, in the flow separation region and in the wake of the adjacent building in a southly wind. A model of the upstream topography to the northeast was constructed using a 1:600 scale. This model terrain was 24 ft long (2.7 miles of the prototype terrain) with the Kaiser building site near its trailing edge. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles were measured along the terrain

Chronic cough with normal sweat chloride: Phenotypic descriptions of two rare cystic fibrosis genotypes

AbstractWhile our understanding of cystic fibrosis genetics has expanded in recent decades, the genetics and clinical manifestations of the disease remains highly heterogeneous. Diagnosis of CF in non-classical mutations remains a clinical challenge. We describe the clinical presentation of two patients with chronic cough found to have normal sweat chlorides. We discuss the subsequent evaluation that lead to the diagnosis of two rare CF mutations. We briefly discuss the use of the expanded 106-panel of CF mutations (homozygous 3849 + 10  kb C > T), and the role of whole CFTR gene sequencing (heterozygous c.2752-26 A > G/5T)

The definitive version was published in Biogeosciences 8 (2011): 2993-2997, doi:10.5194/bg-8-2993-2011.Kaiser (2011) has introduced an improved method for calculating gross productivity from the triple isotopic composition of dissolved oxygen in aquatic systems. His equation avoids approximations of previous methodologies, and also accounts for additional physical processes such as kinetic fractionation during invasion and evasion at the air-sea interface. However, when comparing his new approach to previous methods, Kaiser inconsistently defines the biological end-member with the result of overestimating the degree to which the various approaches of previous studies diverge. In particular, for his base case, Kaiser assigns a 17O excess to the product of photosynthesis (17δP) that is too low, resulting in his result being ~30 % too high when compared to previous equations. When this is corrected, I find that Kaiser's equations are consistent with all previous study methodologies within about ±20 % for realistic conditions of metabolic balance (f) and gross productivity (g). A methodological bias of ±20 % is of similar magnitude to current uncertainty in the wind-speed dependence of the air-sea gas transfer velocity, k, which directly impacts calculated gross productivity rates as well. While previous results could and should be revisited and corrected using the proposed improved equations, the magnitude of such corrections may be much less than implied by Kaiser. This work was funded by the NOAA Global Carbon Cycle Program (NA 100AR4310093)

    Möglichkeiten der Strukturierung von Hedgefondsportfolios

The year 2000 started the evolution of the German market for Structured Products with incorporated Hedge Fund exposures. This paper provides an extensive commentary on this fast growing segment. Our analysis suggests that the market for existing products is affected by significant heterogeneity. This heterogeneity relates to amongst others the underlying product and cost structure, the performance and the investment style. The diversity and flexibility that enables the investor to acquire a tailor-made and portfolio-optimized asset allocation, has proven to remain attractive, despite the events of recent years. A new investment act ('Investmentmodernisierungsgesetz') was implemented in Germany in 2004. This means that direct investments in (Fund of) Hedge Funds now compete against Structured Products. However our analysis concludes that these product groups coexist. One reason is the innovation power of financial engineers who continuously create new structured products with specific features. --Hedgefonds,Structured Products,Index Certificates,Constant Proportion Portfolio Insurance,Indizes

The value-added of investable hedge fund indices

This paper empirically investigates the risk and performance of three types of alternative beta products over the January 2002 to September 2009 time period: funds of hedge funds (FHFs), investable hedge fund indices (IHFIs), and hedge fund replication strategies (HFRS). We show that IHFIs are true alternative beta products with high correlations and beta to noninvestable hedge fund indices. Our results further suggest that, in a best case scenario, IHFIs outperform FHFs and HFRS on a risk-adjusted basis. However, in the worst case scenario, IHFIs underperform both investments. If we take the average of all IHFIs, we find they perform equally well as FHFs. Hence, IHFIs constitute a solid alternative to FHF investments, while costing substantially less, and offering generally more transparency and liquidity. We propose that fee-sensitive investors especially should consider taking a core-satellite approach to their hedge fund portfolio, with the core represented by cheap passive hedge fund beta through IHFIs, and the satellite represented by more expensive and actively managed alphagenerating FHFs. --Hedge funds, investable hedge fund indices, alternative beta, funds of hedge funds, hedge fund replication,Omega ratio
