    Designing a Human-Centered AI Coach for Entrepreneurial Readiness: Fostering Empathy and Critical Design Futures Thinking in Interdisciplinary Learning

    Higher-education entrepreneurship programs seldom integrate cognitive-science insights or human-centred information-systems (IS) design, resulting in sporadic gains in students’ creativity and entrepreneurial readiness. We present early findings from an exploratory case study that embeds a conversational AI coach, grounded in empathy, critical design futures thinking, and Socratic dialogue, into a university-wide interdisciplinary design-innovation course. The AI coach dynamically scaffolds reflection, metacognition, and iterative prototyping. Using an explanatory-sequential mixed-methods design, we administer a validated entrepreneurial readiness survey (pre/post) to 100 undergraduates and complement the quantitative shifts with think-aloud interviews and focus-group discussions. Planned analyses will test whether AI-mediated cognitive engagement predicts significant improvements in entrepreneurial readiness and collaborative innovation skills. Findings suggest students’ heightened self-reflection, reframing of problem statements, as they test assumptions and develop dispositions like resilience and adaptability. Findings aim to extend human-centred IS theory and provide design principles for ethically scaling adaptive, cognition-aware entrepreneurial coaching

They didn't have any children even though they got married a long time ago. The old man said to his wife, "We have to spend the rest of our lives together without having any children. Maybe this is our fate." Then, the wife got pregnant when they were unexpected for the baby. The old couple was so grateful and happy. But when the baby was born, he got no legs or hands. He got only head. Surprisingly, the baby could speak as soon as he was born. He said, "Mom and Dad, don't abandon me, please. I will take good care of you two although I haven't got any legs or hands. I just want to live on this earth. So, please don't abandon me." The old parents said, "Okay, don't worry. We won't abandon you." Then, they raised the boy carefully. The baby boy was gradually growing up. The old couple couldn't let the neighbours know about their son because their son hadn't got any legs or hands. They didn't take him outside too because they were embarrassed. One day, the boy said to his parents, "Mom and Dad, give me permission to go outside, please. Although you two are very old, you have to raise the cows and the buffaloes. I want to take that duty now." The parents said, "You haven't got any legs or hands. How could you raise them?" Then, he said, "Don't worry. Just pack some rice for me to eat. Put me and that rice in a bag. And hang it on the cow's horns." So, his parents put him in the bag and hung it on the horns every morning. He had been raising the cows and buffaloes for three or four years. They had lots of herds then. They were getting rich. His parents were very happy about it. One day, the boy told his parents, "There will be a Manaw festival at that village. I want to go there. Can you arrange the clothes for me, please?" His parents said, "How can you dance, my boy?" He said, "You will see my body dancing at the festival. I want to dance too. And before I go to that festival, can you please get a lady for me?" The parents were afraid to ask some ladies to get married to their son. But one lady gave her permission to get married to their son. They were very happy after hearing the lady's answer. They felt at ease. Then, they prepared costumes for their son and went to the Manaw festival. At the festival, there was a surprise for the parents. They saw that their son was a very handsome guy with legs and hands. He was tall, handsome and had fair skin. His parents were very happy to see him like that. After some months, there was a Manaw festival at Sun land. The boy wanted to go there too. There was no one who was as handsome as him. At Sun land, they held a horse-riding competition too. The King of the Sun land announced, "I'll give my daughter to the winner as a prize." So, the boy competed in the race. Luckily, the boy won the race. At his home, there was a thing like a frog skin beside his bed. His parents saw that and thought if their son didn't wear it back, he would have legs and hands forever. So, they burnt the skin when the boy was not at home. When his parents burnt the skin, he felt hurt and ill while he was at the Sun land. Soon, he didn't have any legs or hands. He thought, "My parents might burn my skin. Not very long, I'll get to live as a human. But now? What a pity! I'm going to die soon." Then, he went back home and died right in his parents' hands. The parents were upset and sorrowful. At that moment, people from the Sun land came to their house and said, "We are searching for a handsome man who won in the horse-riding competition at the Sun land. Our King ordered us to take the man to our land since he made a promise to give the princess to the winner." The boy's parents said, "He was dead. His dead body is over there." When the people from the Sun land looked at the dead body, they saw only head. There were no legs or hands on him. They said, "Not this man. That man is handsome and tall."     Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was a king and queen in a country. They were deeply in love. But the neighbouring country invaded their country frequently. So the king thought, "We must fight back against the attackers. If not, our country won't have peace." The queen was pregnant at that time. After a few months, she gave birth to a prince. The king was happy and raised his infant baby. And he called upon the deity, praying, "May my son grow to be wise, successful and prosperous." As the invasions continued, the king prepared to defend his kingdom. There was an ocean between those two countries. So the king offered some offerings to the ocean deity and prayed to help him. Before departing for battle, he said heartfelt words to his wife. "If I lose the battle and perish, you must remarry and find happiness. But promise me this窶俳nly when our son grows old enough to have a mustache, should you marry another man." She said sadly, "No, you will win. You won't die. I will be waiting for you no matter what." Then he left for the battle. He had been winning all the battles no matter how difficult they were. He defeated the enemies and brought victories for his country. Then he climbed to the top of the mountain and proclaimed, "I am undefeatable! I am the greatest warrior!" When the water deity heard his boastful declaration, the deity was angry. So he destroyed all boats by creating storms and swirling eddies. The king clung to a floating log and barely managed to reach the shoreline alive. Some of his soldiers survived and stayed with him. They were in trouble. They couldn't go to a nearby country because there was a monster. Soon, they ran out of all their rations. They were starving to death. So the king decided to go there no matter what. He climbed the rocky mountains to get there. At that moment, the water deity appeared in front of him and said, "If you truly believe you can reach that country, chew this leaf." The deity gave him a large leaf and warned, "But you mustn't touch me." He continued climbing the rocks after eating the leaf that the deity had given. When he reached there, a gorgeous lady, who was actually a monster, welcomed him warmly. She often tried to persuade him to stay with her forever, but the king missed his home deeply. He told the monster, "Can you arrange a boat for me to return home?" However, she didn't want to arrange the boat for him. Instead, she told him, "You can't go back. Stay here." He insisted on going back home, saying, "My son must be a grown man by now. I miss him terribly." At last, the monster gave him the boat. But the water deity created storms and violent wind to destroy the boat as soon as he set sail. When the king drowned into the water, the lady ordered the king's servants to save him. She treated him well. Soon, he recovered and gained strength. She told him, "I told you not to go back." Later, the monster tried to change his mind again and said to stay with her here. But he determined to return home because he missed his family so much. When he tried to go back home by boat, it was destroyed by the storm again. So he asked the water deity, "Why? Do you want me to die? What do you want?!" Then the deity said, "You have declared that you have won the battles because you are great! Are you sure? You won the battles because of your own strength?" In fact, the water deity disturbed him from getting home. However, the king didn't want to admit that he won the battles with the help of the water deity. No matter how many times he tried to go back home by boat, his boat was destroyed not long after he touched the water. In the end, the monster realized that she couldn't persuade him to stay here anymore, so she let him go back home. She said, "You will have to go past the place filled with many fierce animals." He firmly said, "I will go back home, no matter how difficult the journey is." Then he reached an island where another monster disguised as a human. The monster, pretended like a human, persuaded him to stay with her too. She asked him, "I am the most beautiful woman you'll ever meet. If you stay with me, you will never grow old and will live forever." But he insisted on going back and asked for the boat. She treated him well and offered lots of delicious meals. At last, she grew angry when he insisted on leaving, so she said, "If you really want to leave, cut a tree from that mountain and build your own boat." He really did it. Then he started making the boat. He needed to go past the volcanoes on his way back home. His soldiers told him not to go that way. But he declared, "I will go first!" He kept going through the lava spewing fiercely from the volcanoes." However, he couldn't reach his country yet, although he had passed those volcanoes. He arrived in another land. On the other hand, the king's mother was always waiting for him. Some of his soldiers had returned their home and told his family, "The king boasts that he won the battles just by his strength alone. So the water diety gets angry at him and punishes him. The deity ruins all of the king's attempts to go back home. The king might be dead by now." But his family couldn't believe that he was dead. His mother was heartbroken and thought to die in the water. She told her daughter-in-law, "There are many men who wish to marry you. My son is dead, and I no longer want to live." There were many kings and other men who were fighting over the queen. Then the queen stopped her mother-in-law's suicide in the water while crying. She said, "My mother-in-law if you die, there will be only me and my son left in this place. I don't want to remarry another person. Please don't die." But the mother-in-law kept saying, "I am so tired of waiting for my son. People said he was dead. I can窶冲 bear to live in a world where my son is dead. Don't stop me." Then she drowned herself and died. She became a nat spirit. On the other hand, the king still faced different hardships. Then he arrived at one village where his mother lived there as a nat spirit. When he met his mother, he begged her forgiveness, "Mom, please forgive me. I couldn't come back in time." His mother also apologized to him, "Please forgive me, my son. I suicide without waiting for you. I am so sorry." She helped him arrive at another place without any obstacles. Then he arrived at a village, the top of the rocky mountain. His mother showed him the way to reach home faster. Meanwhile, back in his kingdom, the other men wanted to marry the widowed queen. The queen tried many ways to delay her remarriage. The queen said, "Let me weave something for my late husband. After I finish it, I will marry one man." But she couldn't finish weaving it even after a long time. Later, she gave another reason, "I can remarry only when my son grows old enough to have a mustache." She intentionally tried not to finish weaving because she didn't want to marry anyone. But all of her weaving materials were burnt. Soon, her son said to her, "Father is not dead yet. I will find him." And he went out to find his father. He arrived at his father's friend's country and asked for help. The king of that country was willing to help him and gave him a boat. He rode the boat and went to his grandfather's village where he was born. When he was there, he introduced himself to the chief, "I was born here. I am their son. Do you remember me?" The chief said, "Yes, your mother is my daughter." Before he arrived there, his father king arrived here first. The king's mother, who became the nat, arranged the boat and sent him to this village by blowing the wind. He arrived at the place near his wife's father's village. There was a monster in that village too. She tried to tempt the king to stay, saying, "Don't go back. You will be immortal here." But the king said, "No, I will return to my family no matter what." As time passed by, the king became older, and his look had changed. He finally arrived at his father-in-law's land. His father-in-law remembered him and welcomed him warmly. Soon after his arrival, his son arrived there too. When the young man was there, the old grandfather asked him, "Who are you?" He explained to him who his parents were and why he had come. The old man recognized him and said, "Your father is still alive." He then brought the young man to his father, the king. But the young man couldn't remember him because his father's appearance had completely changed. So he denied, "He is not my father." And he took out a knife and held it to his father窶冱 neck. His grandfather explained to him, "No, he truly is your father. When you were born here, he held you in his hands and declared that you would be the greatest." Finally, the young man realized the truth, and father and son embraced each other warmly. Then they went back to their country happily. The father told his son, "I am too old now. When we meet your mother, don't tell her that I am your father. Just tell her that I am still alive and look like a beggar." His wife really couldn't recognize him because his appearance had changed.
