The aim of this contribution is to introduce the list of algal material coming from the Kryptogamae exsiccatae edited by the Museum of Natural History of Wien and preserved in the Phycological Collec- tion. Prefazione
Phytoplankton of the Escaba reservoir
This chapter analyzes space-time variations of phytoplankton in the limnetic zone of the Escaba reservoir and the mouths of its tributary rivers, Chavarría, Las Moras, El Chorro and Singuil, considering physicochemical variables in order to characterize the water quality between 2010 and 2012. One hundred and thirty-five taxa were determined: 77 diatoms, 35 chlorophytes, 12 cyanobacteria, 5 charophytes, 5 eugle- noids and 1 dinoflagellate. Algal density varied between 84 and 6,924 individuals/ml with Ceratium hirundinella as the dominant species, except for the spring of 2011. Chlorophyll-a varied seasonally and in space with values between 6 and 2,511 μg/l, with higher numbers for the affluents. Elevated biomass values and the polysapro- bic character of the waters defined a deficient or bad ecological status. The specific diversity oscillated between 0 and 2.76. The present study provides new information regarding the algal biodiversity of the Escaba dam and the distribution area of C. hirundinella in the province of TucumánFil: Martinez Demarco, Solange Romina. Prefazione

On some arthropods associated with Ficus species (Moraceae) in the Maltese Islands
An account is given on the 39 arthropod species which were found on different Ficus trees in the Maltese Islands. Seventeen species represent new records for Malta including Anothopoda fici, Asetadiptacus emiliae, Astichus bachmaieri, Ecphylus caudatus, Empoasca alsiosa, Eupristina verticillata, Ficocyba ficaria, Gynaikothrips ficorum, Josephiella microcarpae, Philotrypesis caricae, Pleistodontes sp., Rhaphitelus maculats, Rhyncaphytoptus ficifoliae, Scobicia chevrieri, Silba adipata, Singhiella citrifolii and Zanchius breviceps. Anothopoda fici and Zanchius breviceps, also represent new records for the entire European territory. Of the 39 arthropods, 33 feed on Ficus trees, whereas the rest are either parasitoids or predators of some of these plant feeders. The 33 species which use Ficus as their host-plant spend most of their development on and utilise the aforementioned trees as their main source of food, at least during their larval development.peer-reviewe
The role of social determinants on men's and women's mobility in Italy : a comparison of discriminant analysis and artificial neural networks
The paper focuses on the role of the spouse's occupation as a resource for mobile individuals, from the perspective that social positions are held by families, rather than by individuals. Three groups are confronted in terms of the role of the key variables and other relevant factors: men whose spouse does not have a paid job (group 1), men and women whose spouse has a paid job (group 2 and 3). The data set is provided by the national survey on social mobility in Italy, carried out in 1985; social achievements of members of the three groups are considered, including social origins and destinations, social position corresponding to respondent's first job, cultural background (educational achievement of respondent's father and mother found), respondent's education and spouse's social position. The techniques used are discriminant analysis and back propagation Neural Networks. Both techniques traced a clear boundary between group 1 and groups 2 and 3, which were discriminated mainly on the basis of the spouse's occupation; Artificial Neural Networks reached better classification results and allowed a deeper insight into the nonlinear effects of the discriminating variables for the three groups
BAYESIAN CONTROL OF THE NUMBER OF SERVERS IN A GI/M/C QUEUING SYSTEM
In this paper we consider the problem of designing a GI/M/c queueing system. Given arrival and service data, our objective is to choose the optimal number of servers so as to minimize an expected cost function which depends on quantities, such as the number of customers in the queue. A semiparametric approach based on Erlang mixture distributions is used to model the general interarrival time distribution. Given the sample data, Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are used to estimate the system parameters and the predictive distributions of the usual performance measures. We can then use these estimates to minimize the steady-state expected total cost rate as a function of the control parameter c. We provide a numerical example based on real data obtained from a bank in Madrid.
