Walking, photographing, drawing: experiences with children in Praça da República (SP)
This research aims at understanding the uses and the appropriation of the urban space by children at a Municipal Kindergarten School in São Paulo, located at República Square, downtown. The theoretical references encompass the ideas of Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau and Francesco Careri. These authors point to the presence, in daily spatial practices of subjects, of appropriation experiences focused on the use rather than the dominant rationale of space production. Strolls, drawing and photographing of the República Square and its surroundings have been proposed to the girls and boys who have taken part in this research, as situations that subsidize the reflection of the experiences of appropriation. These situations are the basis for the analysis of relations established among adults, children and the surrounding space, with an aim at articulating them to social phenomena in wider urban contexts. As a methodology, we use the participant observation, present in the ethnographic perspective, besides the proposition for children to draw and photograph. The conclusion points to the existence of children appropriation of the space from a use standpoint, highlighting the contribution of researches with early childhood in urban contexts for the inclusion of subjects who have been historically made invisible in analyses of the forms of space production in cities
Being child on the city streets: urban space and street childhood in Sao Paulo
This research pursuits to understand the spatial practices and everyday relationships established by street children on avenida Paulista, in the city of São Paulo. It uses walking and the creation of drawings as a resource for research and relationships within the city. It also uses newspaper reports as documental sources to discuss the presence of street children during the covid-19 pandemic. These different methodological resources allowed a broader look at the street experiences lived by children, pointing to the diversity of relationships they establish with/in urban space and the impossibility of retaining them in decontextualized or standardizing explanations. Based on the observations made, the research discusses the agency of children in the city and situates their participation in the production of urban space
What is the role of philosophy during a global crisis?
We are all preoccupied with the Covid-19 global pandemic and justly so. Everyone in the world has lots of little decisions to make, and many are facing life and death situations. What is the use of philosophy in all of this? Is it helpful? Is it a distraction? Can philosophy solve problems or even make a better world? In this wide-ranging discussion, our host Jack Russell Weinstein and guest Susan Neiman explore the absurdity of “trolley problems,” whether we should use the term “evil” to to describe a pandemic, and how we can best support Amazon employees. This episode is both a compelling and accessible philosophical exploration, and a historical artifact that records a unique moment in time. It has been described by one listener as “our most human of episodes.”
Susan Neiman is Director of the Einstein Forum, in Potsdam Germany. She has been a professor of philosophy at Yale and Tel Aviv University, and is the author of numerous books, most recently, Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil.https://commons.und.edu/why-radio-archive/1000/thumbnail.jp
Negative correlation and log-concavity
This thesis is concerned with negative correlation and log-concavity properties and relations between them, with much of our motivation provided by [40], [46], and [12]. Our main results include a proof that "almost exchangeable" measures satisfy the "Feder-Mihail" property; counterexamples and a few positive results related to several conjectures of Pemantle [40], Wagner [46], and Choe and Wagner [7] concerning negative correlation and log-concavity properties for probability measures and relations between them; a proof that a conditional version of the "antipodal pairs property" implies a strong form of log-concavity, which yields some partial results on a well-known conjecture of Mason [38]; a proof that "competing urn" measures satisfy "conditional negative association"; and proofs that certain classes of measures introduced by Srinivasan [42] and Pemantle [40] satisfy a strong form of negative association.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 83-85)by Michael Neima
Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-88-030-2109: Neiman Sawmills, Inc.; Hulett, Wyoming
In response to a request from management, an evaluation was undertaken of possible hazardous working conditions as a result of excessive noise at the Neiman Sawmill facilities (SIC-2421), Hulett, Wyoming. The company produced several varieties of untreated boards and lumber products from pine logs. During this survey 108 workers were employed. Noise dosimetry readings revealed that 73% of the surveyed job descriptions (16 of 22) had time weighted average (TWA) noise levels in excess of 90 decibels-A (dBA). Only one job had TWA levels less than the NIOSH recommended limits of 85dBA. Engineering noise controls produced differing amounts of noise reduction to the workers. An enclosure around the planer in the planer mill was found to be effective. However, the separation of the edger and trimmer operations to their own buildings was not an effective noise reduction technique. Hearing tests revealed that 72.5% of the employees exhibited some degree of hearing impairment at one or more audiometric test frequencies. The author concludes that a health hazard existed for workers. The author recommends that a comprehensive hearing conservation program should be implemented. Recommendations for engineering controls for the mills are included

SOBRE O FIO E ÀS MARGENS: DESCIDA AO ORDINÁRIO E PRÁTICAS DE PESQUISA COM E SOBRE CRIANÇAS NA PANDEMIA
When we carry out research, we often feel like we are walking on a thread, balancing or involving ourselves in its wefts, tracing a destiny, cutting and breaking certain situations and conditions, or sewing and driving continuities (DIDI-HUBERMAN, 2019). When we do research with young children, these conditions and feelings take on a different shape and require the production of different paths, decision-making and reflections on the methods to be used. In times of pandemic, this thread has become more frayed, leaving us stunned in the face of a world that is collapsing. This article seeks to understand, from the margins, aspects of daily life and the ordinary of the world lived by children and adult women-mothers in Occupation housing and homeless population during the Covid-19 pandemic in the city of São Paulo. By drawing closer to the thinking of Veena Das (2020), we seek to produce reflections from the margins, from where it is possible to do research with children, in order to make it possible to understand issues such as housing, childhood and struggle and the relationship with the state.
Moral Clarity: A Guide for Grown-Up Idealists
Excerpt
In Moral Clarity, author Susan Neiman claims to be responding to requests from readers of her previous book, Evil in Modern Thought, to give an account of my own views in relation to contemporary events (4). Thus she offers her philosophical training in the effort to examine philosophical consequences of contemporary political discourse, and offer a framework for alternatives (5). In so doing, Neiman offers us a decidedly polemical work, but one with solid theoretical grounding. Neiman explains that her last book reinterpreted the history of modern Western philosophy as the search for the meaning of evil and suffering as seen in the events of their day (4). Moral Clarity is Neiman\u27s response to contemporary events. More specifically, she examines the philosophical consequences of contemporary political discourse and offers a framework for alternatives (5). In so doing she attempts to recapture moral language from political conservatives for a floundering left leaning liberalism, so that it can meaningfully talk about and envision a more just future. This book, says Neiman aims to reclaim moral concepts that the left no longer uses with full force (18)
