Woolf’s atom, Eliot’s catalyst, and Richardson’s waves of light: science and modernism in 1919

    No full text
This chapter stages an argument about the importance of the ways in which three modernist writers engaged with scientific ideas and deployed explicitly scientific metaphors in the year 1919. It offers new insights into the extent to which, at this particular historical moment, the theorisation and the creation of what was understood as ‘modern’ writing happened in the interstices between science and literature. The writers discussed are T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Richardson, and the analysis of their texts engages with the metaphor of ‘the atom’, and ‘the catalyst’ and the idea of ‘waves of light’. Focussing on one single year, the chapter maps with some precision networks of transmission between scientific and literary writings through attention to journals, little magazines, and a range of literary and scientific publications from that year, as well as drawing on diaries, letters and other forms of historical evidence

A disease register for ME/CFS: Report of a pilot study

    No full text
Background: The ME/CFS Disease Register is one of six subprojects within the National ME/CFS Observatory, a research programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund and sponsored by Action for ME. A pilot study in East Anglia, East Yorkshire, and London aimed to address the problem of identifying representative groups of subjects for research, in order to be able to draw conclusions applicable to the whole ME/CFS population. While not aiming for comprehensive population coverage, this pilot register sought to recruit participants with ME/CFS in an unbiased way from a large population base. Those recruited are constituting a cohort for long-term follow-up to shed light on prognosis, and a sampling frame for other studies. Findings: Patients with unidentified chronic fatigue were identified in GP databases using a READ-code based algorithm, and conformity to certain case definitions for ME/CFS determined. 29 practices, covering a population aged 18 to 64 of 143,153, participated.510 patients with unexplained chronic fatigue were identified. 265 of these conformed to one or more case definitions. 216 were invited to join the register; 160 agreed. 96.9% of participants conformed to the CDC 1994 (Fukuda) definition; the Canadian definition defined more precisely a subset of these. The addition of an epidemiological case definition increased case ascertainment by approximately 4%. A small-scale study in a specialist referral service in East Anglia was also undertaken. There was little difference in pattern of conformity to case definitions, age or sex among disease register participants compared with subjects in a parallel epidemiological study who declined to participate.One-year follow-up of 50 subjects showed little change in pain or fatigue scores. There were some changes in conformity to case definitions. Conclusions: Objective evaluation indicated that the aim of recruiting participants with ME/CFS to a Disease Register had been fulfilled, and confirmed the feasibility of our approach to case identification, data processing, transmission, storage, and analysis. Future developments should include expansion of the ME/CFS Register and its linkage to a tissue sample bank and post mortem tissue archive, to facilitate support for further research studies

Triorganoantimony(V) complexes with internally functionallized oximes: synthetic, spectroscopic and structural aspects of [R3Sb(Br)L], [R3Sb(OH)L] and [R3SbL2], crystal and molecular structures of [Me3Sb{ON=C(Me)C4H3O}2], [Me3Sb{ON=C(Me)C4H3S}2], 2-OC4H3C(Me)=NOH and 2-SC4H3C(Me)=NOH

Triorganoantimony(V) complexes with internally functionallized oximes of the type [R3Sb{ON=C(Me)Ar}2] (1) [R=Me, Pri; Ar=C5H4N, C4H3S, C4H3O] have been prepared by the reaction of R3SbBr2 with the corresponding oximes in 1:2 molar ratio in anhydrous benzene. Treatment of 1 with one equivalent of R3SbX2 afforded a redistribution product [R3Sb(X){ON=C(Me)Ar}] (2) [X=(a):Br, (b):OH]. The species, R3Sb(OH)L, may also be obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of 1 (R=Pri; Ar=C5H4N). All of these complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, and IR and NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopic studies. Crystal structures of [Me3Sb{ON=C(Me)C4H3O-2}2] (3), [Me3Sb{ON=C(Me)C4H3S-2}2] (4) 2-OC4H3C(Me)=NOH (5) and 2-SC4H3C(Me)=NOH (6) are reported. The geometry around the antimony atom in 3 and 4 is distorted trigonal bipyramidal with the carbon atoms of the SbMe3 unit in equatorial positions and the two oxygen atoms of the oxime group occupying axial positions (O(1)---Sb---O(2) 171.67(12) in 3 and 169.14(13) in 4). The free oxime is clearly hydrogen bonded (H---N 2.08 Å in 6) to essentially form a dimer

Effect of test conditions on the essential work of fracture in polyethylene terephthalate film

    No full text
The tear resistance of polyethylene terephthalate film is characterized by the essential work of fracture method in mode I as a function of test speed and temperature. Attempts to extrapolate tearing resistance found by the method of essential work to commercial slitting processes are discussed. Limitations of the essential work of fracture method with regards to specimen size are evaluated. Based on the findings modifications to the test protocol are suggested

    Me-time is time for Allah

We often feel overwhelmed by all the tasks we face in our everyday life; whether as employees, mothers, fathers, homemakers. We often wish for some time for ourselves, time to relax, time off. Some me-time. However, once we have that me-time, we do not come out as refreshed as we had wished or expected. Why? One on One With Allah As Muslims who want to draw nearer to our beloved Allah, we should try and transform every moment of me-time in time with and for Allah. Our me-time should be time when we are one on one with Allah. Only us and Allah. Because it is in this special me-time with Allah that we can really, fully draw new strength and recharge our spiritual battery. We will gain energy for our worldly life and insha’Allah be more content and relaxed in our undertakings. We will receive light that guides us through the day. Light that illuminates the darkness of difficult times. And we will insha’Allah prepare for our time in the next world
