Development and evaluation of sunscreen creams containing morin-encapsulated nanoparticles for enhanced UV radiation protection and antioxidant activity

Polymeric NPs containing morin were prepared and optimized. The creams containing morin NPs were also prepared and evaluated. Optimized NPs exhibited particle size of 90.6 nm and zeta potential of -31 mV. The entrapment efficiency of morin, within the polymeric NPs, was found to be low (12.27%). Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry studies revealed no interaction between morin and excipients. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed that the NPs were spherical in shape with approximately 100 nm diameter. Optimized NPs showed excellent in vitro free radical scavenging activity. Skin permeation and deposition of morin from its NPs was higher than its plain form. Different sunscreen creams (SC1–SC8) were formulated by incorporating morin NPs along with nano zinc oxide and nano titanium dioxide. SC5 and SC8 creams showed excellent sun protection factor values (≈40). In vitro and in vivo skin permeation studies of sunscreen creams containing morin NPs indicated excellent deposition of morin within the skin. Morin NPs and optimized cream formulations (SC5 and SC8) did not exhibit cytotoxicity in Vero and HaCaT cells. Optimized sunscreen creams showed excellent dermal safety. SC5 and SC8 creams demonstrated exceptional in vivo antioxidant effect (estimation of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione) in UV radiation-exposed rats. The optimized sunscreen creams confirmed outstanding UV radiation protection as well as antioxidant properties. Keywords: nanoparticles, skin permeation, sunscreen, morin, sun protection factor

Global Trends in Cosmetics Use-Related Adverse Effects: A Bibliometric Analysis of Literature Published during 1957–2021
Cosmetic and beauty products, though not essential for physical health, go a long way in providing mental well-being and confidence, and hence are used substantially. Increasing utilization of varying cosmetic products leads to a multitude of adverse effects. There is more awareness about cosmeceutics, cosmetic products and their adverse effects, and studies on the same are currently trending. Bibliometrics has become a prominent and growing field of research in recent years. The aim of this research was to assess bibliometric features and conduct systematic trend analysis on the literature available on cosmetics’ adverse effects. We analyzed all the published documents that included the keywords “cosmetics” and “adverse effects” between 1957 and 2021. We performed a detailed scientometric and bibliometric assessment in this field. A total of 4127 articles were retrieved from the databases provided by Scopus, which most were original articles. The United States ranked first and dominated the literature with 1292 (31.44%) documents followed by South Korea 7.47%. Harvard medical school was the most productive institution (1.16%). The study of the adverse effects of cosmetics should be supported and taken up by the researchers/authors from developing and underdeveloped countries
A one-year study of the diurnal cycle of meteorology, clouds and radiation in the West African Sahel region
The diurnal cycles of meteorological and radiation variables are analysed during the wet and dry seasons over the Sahel region of West Africa during 2006 using surface data collected by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) programme’s Mobile Facility, satellite radiation measurements from the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument aboard Meteosat 8, and reanalysis products from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP). The meteorological analysis builds upon past studies of the diurnal cycle in the region by incorporating diurnal cycles of lower tropospheric wind profiles, thermodynamic profiles, integrated water vapour and liquid water measurements, and cloud radar measurements of frequency and location. These meteorological measurements are complemented by 3 h measurements of the diurnal cycles of the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and surface short-wave (SW) and long-wave (LW) radiative fluxes and cloud radiative effects (CREs), and the atmospheric radiative flux divergence (RFD) and atmospheric CREs. Cirrus cloudiness during the dry season is shown to peak in coverage in the afternoon, while convective clouds during the wet season are shown to peak near dawn and have an afternoon minimum related to the rise of the lifting condensation level into the Saharan Air Layer. The LW and SW RFDs and CREs exhibit diurnal cycles during both seasons, but there is a relatively small difference in the LW cycles during the two seasons (10 − 30Wm−2 depending on the variable and time of day). Small differences in the TOA CREs during the two seasons are overwhelmed by large differences in the surface SW CREs, which exceed 100Wm−2. A significant surface SW CRE during the wet season combined with a negligible TOA SW CRE produces a diurnal cycle in the atmospheric CRE that is modulated primarily by the SW surface CRE, peaks at midday at ∼ 150Wm−2, and varies widely from day to day.Peer reviewe
Differences between Nonprecipitating Tropical and Trade Wind Marine Shallow Cumuli
Marine nonprecipitating cumulus topped boundary layers (CTBL) observed in a tropical and in a trade-wind region are contrasted based on their cloud macro-physical, dynamical, and radiative structures. Data from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) observational site previously operating at Manus Island and data collected during the deployment of ARM Mobile Facility at the island of Graciosa were used in this study. The tropical marine CTBL were deeper, had higher surface fluxes and boundary layer radiative cooling, but lower wind speeds compared to their trade-wind counterparts. The radiative velocity scale was 50-70% of the surface convective velocity scale at both locations, highlighting the prominent role played by radiation in maintaining turbulence in marine CTBLs. Despite greater thicknesses, the chord lengths of tropical cumuli were on average lower than that of trade wind cumuli, and due to lower cloud cover, the hourly averaged (cloudy and clear) liquid water paths of tropical cumuli were lower than the trade-wind cumuli. At both locations ~70% of the cloudy profiles were updrafts, while the averaged amount of updrafts near cloud base stronger than 1 m s-1 was ~22% in tropical cumuli and ~12% in the trade-wind cumuli. The mean in-cloud radar reflectivity within updrafts and mean updraft velocity was higher in tropical cumuli than the trade-wind cumuli. Despite stronger vertical velocities and more amount of strong updrafts, due to lower cloud fraction, the updraft mass-flux was lower in tropical cumuli compared to the trade-wind cumuli. The observations suggest the tropical and trade-wind marine cumulus clouds to differ significantly in their macro-physical and dynamical structures.Peer reviewe
Uncovering Trends and Impact: A Bibliometric Analysis of Open Access Social Science Journals in Scopus (2012-2022)
239-248This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of research trends and collaboration dynamics of Open Access Social
Science Journals indexed in Scopus from 2012 to 2022. It examined 627 documents from 167 sources, with an annual growth
rate of 18.52%. Collaborative research was prevalent, with 1440 contributors, including 89 solo authors. International
collaboration was found in 25.84% of documents. Bradford’s Law categorized journals into three zones, with just four journals
in Zone-I contributing 36.52% of all documents, indicating the influence of specialized journals. Authorship varied, with
Thelwall M. being the most prolific author. Lokta’s Law revealed a skew in authorship, with most authors contributing only one
article, Lotka’s inverse square law does not confirm to the present data set. Keyword analysis highlighted
themes like “bibliometrics”, “Human”, and “Citation Analysis,” reflecting interest in research dissemination. Treemap analysis
visually represented keyword distribution. Collaboration network analysis identified 9 clusters of countries with strong
collaborative ties, with the USA, Germany, and China leading. These countries played pivotal roles in international research
collaborations. In conclusion, this research offers valuable insights into academic research, emphasizing keyword importance,
concentration in specialized journals, varying author productivity, and the central role of specific countries in global knowledge
exchange. These findings are relevant for researchers, policymakers, and institutions navigating the evolving academic research
landscap
Facets of Technology Transfer: A Perspective of Pharmaceutical Industry

It is observed that normally technologies are created in developed countries and benefits of these technologies are not spilled over to people in the developing countries. It is essential to make these technologies easily and economically available to people in developing countries. Technology transfer is thus an important aspect in making these technologies available to developing countries. By transferring technologies, firms can recoup a substantial portion of investment. Government, industry and academia can join hands in developing and distributing technologies to all the stakeholders. Licensing
(in-licensing and out-licensing) is one such phenomenon of technology transfer that has gained momentum in pharmaceutical industry whereby pharma companies can contribute to research and development.
